I am a gas station clerk and this is driving Me nuts. First of all, there's button to turn ALL pumps off. Ours is inside on our register but we've all seen them outside too. Second of all, modern pumps don't break like that. People drive off with the pump still in their car (it's happened 5 times this year), there's a safety mechanism that breaks off the handle and keeps the rest intact. Lastly, the spot for new fuel is usually more out of the way and I've never had a fuel truck driver park whenever they felt like it. Granted I'm one person at one modern gas station so others might have different experiences but none of this would happen at the one I work at. (And probably almost no others either)

Last year, I had the 'fun' job of emptying fareboxes off city busses every night into vaults while workers were gassing the busses up and sweeping them out. On occasion, workers forget to detach the nozzles from the busses before moving the busses to the next stage of the nightly cleaning, and the way we didn't have fuel spewing forth in an alarming manner was the hoses at each of the four pumps had a point on them that could pull apart without a fuel leakage happening. Reattachment isn't difficult, which is a good thing, especially on weeknights when there are several hundred busses that need fueling and cleaning.

They would need to have at least two gas station attendents in on it, and find a way so none of the delivery drivers said shit about how bad things were, AND have none of the delivery drivers DO anything about it.... just for nothing to go wrong on the ports end. On their end there would be SO much shit falling on the responsible peoples heads for a fuckup with their hoses that they wouldnt dare not maintain em.

Our hoses are break-away hoses. In the coupling there's two conical ends that when pushed together let fuel flow freely, but if the hose breaks away a spring retracts and brings the cones to the ends stopping the fuel. Also absorbent, both in towel and "powder" form(it just looks like cat litter to me), a couple of snakes, and basic PPE. (Tyvek suits are in the kiosks, I work in NJ, a full-service state.)

First day of Fire Academy the instructor asked if anyone watched shows like this. He responded with "They are great soap operas set in a fire department. They are not how things actually get done. 'Rescue Me' was a good one tho. Shit gets f$&ked up. Thats accurate. If you see dead people you lost or couldnt save, make sure you get some help. This is a f$&ked up job and you will see f$&ked up things. Heart attacks, cancer, and suicide are how most of us end up. All of us end up with shitty knees and a few burns. Not marrying the hot girl at the station you've waited 2 seasons to kiss. Scared? Good theres the door. Leave now, don't waste our time. No judgement." That was day 1, orientation, 3 people dropped that day after class, 10 total by completion. Stay safe out there.

The shows Jason parodies are so stupidly and poorly written and produced---by clearly inexperienced writers and directors---that nobody ever thinks about such common sense things as shutoff valves, or walking around behind the pumps, or using the aerial ladder to get across something like slippery foam (just using the various things Jason brought up). Why I won't watch television shows anymore---they're so incredibly stupid and ill-thought out, the so-called "entertainment value" is completely non-existent.

I worked one summer in HS at a Citgo. The owner said first day there he could forgive anything. Late, drunk, smoke weed on break, get robbed, help yourself to the snacks, take a tip from the register, all water under the bridge, but if you didn't use the shutoff, he'd flay you over the course of three days.

I don't watch this show so I don't know what happened to the fuel pump hose. But isn't there a safety device that keeps the hose from spraying gasoline when a car pulls away from a pump with the hose still in the car? Also isn't it code that there's an emergency pump shut off button outside near fuel islands that the actors could have pushed to turn off the leaking hose?
@andorastorm10002 жыл бұрын
Yup its called a break away, happens all the time. Worse thing that happens is damage to car from the hose.

what's frustrating is if the writers were not-lazy enough to know this they could still craft their "gas station of doom" storyline but actually have reasons why things aren't working properly.

@@Ashalmawia Yeah, what if someone came and sabotaged them - and it's a mystery! Love the green screens! As far as shutting off the source of fuel to the fire...the pumps are ran by electricity, if there's not a (I think nationally required) emergency shut off, there's a breaker box. If you can't get to the breaker box, pull the meter. Suggestion to producers of the show...hire a real firefighter as an advisor. If you have one either replace them or replace the director for not listening to them.
