@@e2320483 It's not uncommon to see this sort of thing at outposts. They set up an outpost, it pisses off the enemy, and they just send rounds their way from the side of some mountain, maybe they exchange for a little while, or maybe they move and do it again. The volleying rounds back and fourth can also sometimes be distractions for ambushes or other things. These guys are heroes never the less. I just thought it was kind of funny how uneven the volley distribution was.

Yeah it's nothing like the movies or the video games. Often firefights just consist of letting the enemy know you're there, ie; firing at and around where you assume they're hiding. That's just my impression from watching these type of videos. Combat might resemble something from the movies when house to house or close quarters fighting is occurring. Fortunately I know nothing about real combat haha

For everyone whos saying they are wasting ammo shooting at nothing, It's actually called suppressive fire. They know the talibans general location so they're keeping them pinned down while another squad is flanking, or they are waiting for an air strike. It's actually quite effective. Most combat is fought at a distance through suppressing the enemy. Basically, the taliban has eyes on them, up on a hill behind a bunch of trees so if the americans were to move foward, the taliban would have a huge advantage. Makes alot of sense if you think about it. But in my opinion, I think they are suppressing a little too much. A little bit of a controlled burst every few seconds would probably be just as effective, but I'm no soldier so idk.

You don't need to see what you're shooting at this is what a lot of real battles are, it's not like video games where you have the ability to take risks and get close enough to zero in on someone. This is called suppressive fire and it is used to keep the enemies from shooting at you, think of it are you more likely to stick your head up when bullets are hitting all around you or when someone is waiting until they spot you to shoot. There is not the option to engage enemies on a one to one basis, it's shooting where there might be an enemy and hoping you hit them instead of the other way around.

As a former Australian Army section machine gunner, this US gunner has performed well. Remember he is tasked with putting surpressed fire on the enemy and maintaining his weapon in all conditions. He has achieved both which allows marksmen to hit the surpressed targets. In a contact machine gunners are to engage all enemy targets to allow riflemen to fix their position and kill the enemy. As for ammo, we normally have a combat load of 800 to 1000 SS109 5.56 NATO rounds,he probably burnt through 500 rounds he has 500 to go and with 2 section gunners they have between them 1600 to 2000 rounds and 4 barrels for the gun.

I'm no soldier, but it looks like these guys are forgetting lots of tactical principles: 1. Engaging in enemy from a position of lower elevation while the enemy has the higher ground. 2. They're bunched up way too close to each other. When the enemy fires in their general direction, if they miss one of our guys, theres a good chance they'll hit another of our guys becauee were so tightly packed. If i was the CO, I'd order everyone to spread out, minimum 10 meters apart. 3. Looks like no mortars available? Mortars would help with an enemy position dug in so well on high ground. 4. No flanking maneuver attempted? These guys look pretty badly pinned down, but if you can organize a flanking movement around

It looks quite obvious that there is a mountain in front of them, and it also appears that there is a building behind them. They seem to be fighting on level terrain, but if they were to go into someone’s house, and use their roof as an area of elevation, there could be even more collateral damage done. The walls in those houses are made of primarily sandstone. Not made for taking 7.62 from an AK, only could stop at most a 45 ACP. Everything else is ripping through that sandstone. They may be behind a sandstone looking wall, but my collateral damage argument comes up with that. Next point, bunching up. They look decently spread out, and when they aren’t, they are behind at least 2 walls, or a sandstone house. Next point, mortars. The department of defense does not train all soldiers to use mortars, but they do train to use grenades. The fact they do not have mortars, or even someone who knew how to use a mortar, is a logistical issue that the DoD hasn’t solved. Now for the final point, a flanking maneuver. These men don’t look like a large force, maybe a 20 man squad. A 20 man squad, trained extremely well or not, cannot beat a large fighting force they seem to be in a firefight with, trained well or not. We also do not know if any other side street or roads are blocked off. My point being, these men fought as hard as they could and to the best of their ability.

Also, the biggest problem here is the gunner who’s recording this. He has absolutely no trigger discipline and just hammers down. He needs to go back to basic training and relearn the “die die die” rule again. That is, when firing an automatic weapon system you only fire for 3-5 seconds, most instructors tell you to say die die die in your head. This helps to prevent barrel warping, overheating, jams, runaway(weapon continues firing without the trigger pulled) and cooking-off(a round in the chamber “firing” itself due to heat)

Is conservation of ammunition not a factor here? I completely understand suppressing fire, but to go through that many rounds without knowing where the enemy is, is dangerously wasteful. What happens when the squad runs out on supplies and are still being 'suppressed' themselves? You should never put yourself or your squad at that kind of risk.
