Welcome to the FireFly 8SE 4K Action Camera Review!
Starting with the box - we can see the new logo, font and design of Hawkeye - the company that stays behind the Firefly series. The package is decent, well designed. Maybe not as attractive as Gopro Hero series, but the space is much better utilized and the box is full of accessories.
The nicest surprise is the included external microphone! While the embedded one is quite well capable and nicely improved from the 8S model, the addon of an external mic makes the 8SE the best complete vlogging starter kit.
The internals of the 8se are well known - the IMX117 sensor by Sony, with ambarella a12 chipset. This package is almost as good as the hardware of the GoPro Hero 5.
The most obvious for the end-user change is the display - it is now touch, and menus are slightly reorganized. I am still getting used to the new alignment, which looks similar to SJCAM SJ7’s model, but with improvements and cleaner interface.
Battery performance is also great - having a nicely boosted improvement compared to last year’s release. You can expect somewhere between 40 and 70 minutes of shooting and configuring. If the camera is in still condition - the battery life can reach easily more than 90 minutes. And you can charge the battery while you are recording!
Feature-wise the camera has maxed the Ambarella processor inside. Resolutions are real, and 4K is real 4K, so are 2.5K, 2.7K and the lower rates. There has been special attention given to the 120FPS. We know that usually higher rates are a challenge for action cams, and the 8SE is a top performer - keeping most of the quality of the recording. 4K looks awesome, and the level of detail is quite high - bit rate is above 62Mbps. This is 50% more detail than the Sjcam SJ8 Pro a that resolution and frame rate.
All sort of modes are there - video lapse, long exposure, photo lapse and even car mode!
After highlighting the positives - the current minuses are a few:
- there is no embedded speaker. Kind of standard for all the 8-series
- the firmware is still a bit glitchy - I had to remove the battery a few times with the initial release, but do not forget - a person like me is tinkering with the menus all the time, and a regular user is not.
- You also have to make sure a U3 microsd is used. 8S was fine on class 10, but the 8se has higher bit rate and you need a faster card
- just as everything else - the price got an upgrade too! Right now the camera is trending at around 150 USD, which is half of the price of Gopro Hero 5, around 50 bucks less than SJ7 star, and a bit more expensive than some of the models based on the iCatch v50 chipset, which can stabilize image at 4K, but lacks many other features that you get with the 8SE.
The 8S is the action camera with the most consistent firmware maintenance. Firefly have decent online presense and are taking your questions and ideas seriously. Which to me is very important and gives me the confidence to passionately recommend the SE.

I sold the Yi 4K because of the touchscreen only option. In the water it was hard to use and hard to see. Great that the new Firefly offers bot ways. I wish they had a lower contrast mode. I have the 8S 90 , I like it issue is shutter lag in photo mode. Slower than I am used to.

I noticed that they did away with the Firefly led logo at the front of camera and just replaced it with a single led for notification. I liked the Firefly logo touch better myself. Other than the touch screen and maybe a slightly better picture quality and EIS I would probably not run out and get this camera. I would stick with my 8S and wait for a much better version. Does the remote work for putting off while riding motorcycle and what would you choose between Akaso V50 Pro and this one ? It seems its battery is more easily available .. again you have nice style of vlogging , keeps me glued .

I like mine, but only for outdoor use. The low light capability makes it pretty useless with indoor artificial lighting. Comparing this performance to my Samsung phone is like comparing VHS to Bluray. In sunlight it's very good, but the EIS is a bit too subtle, and still really needs a gimbal for producing watchable FHD video. Still I'm very happy with it, and the distortionless lens option makes my flight recordings so much better for long range detail.

Quick update about latest official firmwares for Firefly 8SE camera, both older U version and newer V version. Latest official/stock firmware U110 for older U version of this camera and V110 firmware for newer V camera version can be downloaded here, look at posts #131 and #131.1: www.goprawn.com/forum/ambarella-cams/11380-firefly-8se-modx-custom-firmware/page9 Hope nutsey will release modded V110 and U110 firmwares like he did earlier with older U103 firmware (take a look at page 1 of that forum link above). Keep in mind that latest official firmware available for download on official Hawkeye site is U105 and V105, but lots of buyers in few past monts had received new cameras with firmwares V106, V107 and V110. Why Hawkeye does not release those to the public on official download page only God knows. Anyway, yesterday I'v switched from factory flashed V106 to this latest V110 on my Firefly 8SE 170°FOV and everything is working fine, no bugs so far. I even think bug related to connecting with Bluetooth remote controler has gone with V110 firmware: now camera and Bluetooth controller "handshake" a bit faster I think and most important ih happens every time, with V106 firmware it was not the case. Hi Rodney, you have a point here. Most of the action cameras either don't have manual settings, or they are mostly related to the exposure. And there is no true manual mode, unless you have a GoPro. With action cameras it is hard to find any shutter speec control or aperture control - mostly it is about ISO and Exposure.

This is perhaps the toughest question I will have to respond to. Please note that I am speaking for myself and it is not based on picture quality, but on mostly user experience - I'd likely pick the Mijia, as I love its battery life. But no accessories. The 8SE is awesome too. And I'd put the SJ8 Plus last one because the picture is a bit too red-ish. Overall they are very, very close to each-other. And the SJ8 Plus stabilizes 4K, which is not to be ignored. Means better CPU inside.

Hi LMP and thank you for this good question. They use the same approach as with the older 8S model - it is different nens. Slightly larger than the wide lens. And a bit more expensive. This is why we have the price difference.

It is only the lens. The 170-degree offers wider field-of-vie, which is very typical for an action camera. The 90-degree version is better for cinematic looking footage. For example DJI cameras shoot in similar angle.

It is different hardware. The 90-degree lens is a but bulkier. Via the menus you can use the narrow mode, which will give you a narrow angle by cropping the image, which is close to the 90-degree look, but still not entirely the same.

If it is action camera, I'd go for 170 / wide angle. But it is preference. Last summer I was absolutely delighted by the 90degree version and have recommended it to many people. But right now I'd go for the wider angle.

It has better lens. Other than the lens and the display, differences are almost none. There also is the 90-degree version. Last week I saw the Firefly team actually experimenting with a macro lens :-) But I guess that won't be released publicly.

The one tested is the wide-angle 170 degree version. THe main difference is the way objects near the end of the frame are shown - bent trees and distorted objects, which is very typical for wide angle lenses.

But v50x is useless for low light conditions, even indoors it records a noizy crap. In addition, v50x shoots very bad in 1080p - lack of details, low bitrate. If you need a daylight 4K camera, go with v50x. If you need 1080p in good quality and decent quality in low light - go with Firefly 8 se.

You mention that Hawkeye Firefly provides excellent assistance to users. Is this provided only to reviewers? I have scoured the internet and youtube trying to get some assistance with this thing and have found nothing other than reviews. "Worth it or not" was of some help initially, but I can't expect him to teach me how to use a particular Action Camera. Example: after some head-scratching, I guessed that "photo lapse " meant photo time lapse, but couldn't get it to work. After an hour or so of fumbling around I accidentally found that the "down" button under some circumstances brings up a hitherto undiscovered menu that starts the time lapse process. Nowhere in the microscopic booklet is this mentioned. I am frustrated because you and other reviewers have convinced me that I have purchased the very best Action Camera in my price range, but the documentation is so poor that only the experienced can use it. Not, apparently for a first time user. Your comment about having to reset by pulling the battery was very helpful. I thought that my camera might be defective. I have nearly worn out my battery door. Excellent video. Any pointers you can impart gratefully received. John Is there some way that I can contact this mythological Victor? I hope I don't come off as snotty, but I have been fooling around with this for a frustrating week.

Worth it or not is an awesome channel and the person behind it is very helpful and kind with his community. THe thing with Firefly is that they are not too popular worldwide. I will provide your feedback to their team and I am sure they will upload a newer version of the user guide. As for Victor - [e-mail]. Which firmware are you running? These resets don't sound good - perhaps because of crashing? I'm 73 and not as quick on the uptake as I used to be, so my entry into Action Cameras has not been smooth. I keep getting closer, though. The camera came with U98, so, after a rocky start, I updated to U99. Worth It Or Not said that my SanDisk 64gb U3 exFAT card needed to be formatted with FAT32, so I spent several days trying to figure out how. Win 8.1 upgraded to Win 10 and reverted to Win 8.1 didn't offer FAT32 for 64gb, only for 32 gb. Once accomplished, it seemed to be a bit better, maybe, perhaps, I think. I just updated to U101. Not much difference that I can see. While fumbling through the menus, it will still occasionally lock up, including the power off function. I haven't noticed any pattern. The only cure is to pull the battery, wait 10s or so and reinsert the battery, wait 10s, and try again. This is a real pain when attached to something like a tripod. Your mention of having to do the same during your review relieved my mind that I had a dud and needed to exchange it. I guess I'll just have to wait for them to get their feces arranged into one pile with future updates. The capabilities/price makes it worth the wait, I suppose. But it's frustrating for a newbie. I sent an email to [e-mail], but it is the middle of the night in China, so I should hear from him tomorrow. I just remembered that I have a resizing option on my printer/copier and copied the microscopic manual to 245%. Wow, I can read it without magnifying glass. Do you know what HDMI cable I should get for the camera to be able to play the videos on my TV? There is no mention of it in the manual that I have found. Thanks, John

Hi John, what you describe is very disturbing :( and I so much hope it is an isolated case. One question - are the buttons operational while the hang condition? COuld it be just the touch function to be not operational? As for HDMI - it needed microHDMI cable. Please note that there also is the mini standard, but you will need micro.

When it hangs, nothing works. No touch screen and none of the buttons, not even the power off/on, not even with a VERY long press on any button (think 20-30 seconds). Locked up tighter than a gnat's butt stretched over a rain barrel. Only cure; pop the battery, but even that requires a wait of some number of seconds wait after removal and some number of seconds after reinsertion before power on. Also, i got a new 32gb U3 SanDisk card that was pre-formatted as FAT32, but it wouldn't work until I reformatted it in the camera. Then it worked fine. Hi Garabini. If you want to use the gimbal from the X22 - no way, other cams are too heavy. You can use the 8S though, it will require a decent gimbal. There won't be FPV in that sense via the app.

No, there is no zoom. Actioncameras don't have good zoom capabilities - this always results in loss of quality.

Hi Dario, unfortunately it is not. Legit Ambarella A12 based action cameras only support Gyro @ 1080p 60 and 30FPS. I say "legit", because Eken have some models with EIS stabilization on 4K, not quite sure if it is real.

It is mostly personal choice - both are good, and the difference is the angle of view. I personally would prefer the wide-angle view because of the more dynamics that it adds to the scene. You can shoot narrow with your smartphone's camera anyways 😎

Always good to see well known mates around :) I am shooting almost always with auto settings - because I believe this is how most people will use them. Most of the chosen scenes have been shot in good weather, and usually for action cameras the sunshine is essential. Feel free to share some of your footage that you think doesn't look right

I used Adata class 10 card and it worked fine in 4K recordings. Also a Samsung U3 64GB EVO. On FIrefly's website there are a few other models recommended. For continuous usage of higher framerate better get a U3.

Hi Ar Halimi. I use "true 4k", because unlike other action cam models, it supports 4K without any interpolation. Luckily more and more actioncams nowadays are true/native 4K capable. Mihail my name! :-)

@@wildhog3217 I believe getting 4K camera with EIS stabilization makes better sense - better future proof and gives you options for post-processing if you decide to. Maybe checking some of the newer models is also a good idea - SJCAMs are favorable for many (well, apparently not for me), and Akaso V50 Elite looks to be promising. I think Redskull will opffer review if not done yet, and I am already working on one as well, but it will take some more time. Also, Firefly should have a new model before Christmas.
