Inara's ship is just a surface-to-orbit shuttle that attaches to Serenity; technically it's part of Serenity & Inara rents it from Mal. which is why she's part of the crew, she meets clients at the various planets & moons of the 'Verse that Serenity visits.

"What language is that?" Chinese. In universe, it's a future where the US and China combined. They are the Alliance. In reality, having the characters swear in Chinese was a way to get around the censors.

This was the original pilot. When Joss sequenced the DVDs, he put them in the order he intended them to be in, so yes, this is the one to watch first.

Enjoyed the reaction. For many of us I think it feels like we're introducing a friend to something we like. You might remember at the beginning of the episode - during the war - when Mal kissed the cross he wore around his neck before charging out to do battle -- as opposed to his anti-religion attitude in the "present" toward Shepherd Book, saying grace before the meal, etc. Also, it's great the way people on the ship are relating to one another. Inara and Book, for instance, are both highly educated so that draws them together in a sense. A conversation with someone they can relate to intellectually. I don't see Book saying "I think I'm on the wrong ship" to Jayne. Jayne would probably point the way to the airlock - no sympathy. No spoilers here, but they did a good job of letting relationships develop over the course of the series, not having everything settled by the second episode. A little background that might help -- these are the descendants of people who left Earth (referred to as "Earth-that-was") many years before, settling on planets and moons in this solar system which were terraformed as needed to support life. The "Core Planets" have been settled the longest and are more technologically advanced. This group of planets formed the Alliance. The "Independents" were their opponents, fighting to be left alone and not wanting to be forced into the Alliance. The farther you get from the core, the more "Western" the feel. Horses and wagons included. The series was inspired by the aftermath of the American Civil War in which a lot of Southerners (the losing side) lost all they had and went west to try to make a new life - oftentimes teetering on the edge between legal and illegal just to get by. Anyway, once upon a time in America we had good television. Welcome to Firefly.

"I think I'm on the wrong ship" - I think what I really liked about that scene was Book was just being human. His initial interaction with Inara, while cordial, still had the air of 'authority' (One even has lepers!") He was still 'The Pastor.' And now, for him to make that "confession" to a companion! Trivia: One of Nathan Fillion's supposed ancestors is Confederate General Jubal Early!

The shuttles can't go faster than light speed. Without that ability, it would take a minimum of 10 months to get to Jupiter (that's how long it takes an unmanned satellite with our current technology to reach Jupiter even if launched at the perfect time). Therefore, they dock with Serenity, which can exceed the speed of light.

Only 14 episodes, but the quality is generally very good. This is the intended pilot, The Train Job was like a network forced pilot, but it is also good. As said, the feature film 'Serenity' was made to try a tie up some loose ends. Hope you enjoy.

Since you asked, yes, this is the correct episode to start with. Fox aired it out of order, but this is episode one. The ideal order to watch it is the DVD order, so the next episode should be the Train Job.

One thing that's easy to overlook in this first episode is that Mal kisses a cross during the battle. He appears to have been religious but after his side loses the war he becomes an atheist - hence the tension with Shepherd Book.

"The man is psychotic" is what Simon says about the Captain. It's also what the crew says, while laughing uproariously, at Simon and at you, the viewer. It's best you learn now that the description applies equally well to the writer and creator of the series. You'll curse him and his inevitable betrayals, as you learn to love the show and all of its characters, with all of their charms, from Jayne at "Public Relations" to Kaylee the mechanic, from the captain to the shepherd, from the pilot and his wife, the first mate, to the "ambassador", and of course the Tam siblings. "It's crazy I never saw this... I love sci-fi." I know what you mean. I wish I had seen it in its first run too. But the FOX network didn't understand the show. Their marketing was abysmal (their commercials made it out to look like a wacky goofball comedy in the vein of Red Dwarf, complete with Smashmouth "All Star" track played over the commercials), they forced them to show the episodes out of order (this episode, the pilot, was shown second or third, I think), they moved it around to different days and time slots. They pretty much did everything they could do to make sure it didn't succeed. When I saw the commercials I thought "I don't want to watch some dumb spoof", and only caught up on its genius several years later.

Excellent job with the editing. A very enjoyable watch. You're in for a treat. Plus the re-watch-ability of this show is off the charts. Out of all the fun facts to point out, my favorite is that the ship, Serenity, is just two set-pieces. Upstairs and downstairs. That's how this show makes Serenity feel so alive and real. You'll notice a ton of shots where the camera is circling around characters as they talk. This lets us see an entire spaceship from angles that no other show has really let us do before, in my opinion.

You weren't paying enough attention to the fight at the beginning of the show. The Captain and his first mate, the black woman were in the resistance and the only survivors from their unit. The piolet is her husband, the last member is a sort of heck hand. Don't want to spoil anything for you. The characters will flesh out as the show progresses. Love your reaction and don't know how you haven't seen it before. Don't watch the movie unless you really want to spoil the series. I loved the series and hated it when it was canceled. They sometimes speak in Mandarin, for two reasons, one to emphasize that the culture is a blend of the 2 cultures that colonized space in the untold back story, and second to get around the censors who didn't use translators to find out what was being said, sort of like they say "gorram" instead of god damn. You picked the correct episode to start. production order, more or less, is the best. FOX started with a much later episode, when the series originally aired, and I think that it hurt the series initial popularity. Didn't help that Sci-Fi in general is expensive to produce, and network management never understands Sci-Fi.

Basic concept was "what if the rebels lost to the Empire in Star Wars. And it's also a western." Quick background is that there was a war that ended in an alliance (the Alliance) between China and the USA, hence the reason they occasionally speak Mandarin. In the after-effects of war humanity needed to expand off planet. Various planets and moons were terraformed to make them habitable. Settlers were then moved in to colonize and work. The nicest planets "core worlds", were kept by the government for beaurocrats and the extremely wealthy, the rest dumped of settlers with the bare minimum of supplies and left to fend for themselves, which is why so many are so frontieresque. There was eventually a rebellion by these frontier worlds (the "Brown Coats") which Mal and Zoe were a part of. The rebellion was squashed, restrictions were tightened, and people had to live as best they could. Mal bought a ship, he and Zoe hired a crew, and six years later here we are.

Originally it aired with the train job as first episode (decision by FOX not the director), which meant that everione had the introduction to the characters missing. You watch it in the order it was intended to be viewed. The first (double-) episode was to slow for FOX's taste.

The creator(s) of this show did Buffy the Vampire Slayer and the spin off Angel. These were 7&5 seasons respectively. This show was supposed to be sort of the same. Their are huge character arcs and development. Some people say this show is too slow and not much happens. Thats because the world and character building was cut way too short. Please watch the Serenity movie. It sort of wraps everything up and answers a lot of questions.

There's a deleted scene that shows alot more information on the Battle of Serenity Valley. I'll give you the points. Mal commanded 30 going in. 5 days into the battle so many officers were dead, mal commanded 2,000. By the time the fight was over he had 400 who could still fight. By the time the fighting was over... but both sides left them there "sick, wounded and close to mad what can still walk and talk." By the time medical ships arrived he had less the 40. And of his original 30, just Zoe." Mercey forgiveness faith. He left it all back there. Once your in Serenity you never leave..... you just learn to live there".... I'm excited for you to become a browncoat.

Aloha Jen. This was the correct choice. Firefly was aired out of order, so don't watch that order. The story does have a bit of continuity and that's the best order to watch it in. This was episode 1, even though it was aired at the end of the run on Fox (bastards). There are 14 episodes total, and just because this episode was twice as long as the rest does not mean it should count as 2 episodes. I've seen KZbinrs make that mistake and f'k up the numbering of the episodes. The next epsiode is the Train Job, which did air first, but what ever. Netflix used to have Firefly in the correct order, Hulu and Google Play both also have Firefly in the correct order, just FYI. Stay Shiny!

I think this is one of the best pilots in T.V history. It sets up every character's personality, goals, and their relationships with each other. On top of that, it establishes the important bits of lore in Firefly (Reavers, Alliance vs Browncoats, etc). To top it all off, it's dramatic as hell - crime, two Mexican standoffs, a mysterious woman, a deal gone bad/shootout, and an areal case from crazy cannibals, all under and hour or so. Just perfect. It's such a shame Fox aired it out of order.

Great review, looking foward to the rest. I somehow missed it during the original run. This show was about 15 years ahead of its time and Fox had no idea what they were doing with it. It would have been prefect for a streaming service .

FYI: This episode was intended to be the series pilot episode but the people at Fox thought it was too brooding and slow. They asked Whedon to shoot another episode with more action and humour. So in fact 'Serenity' was never aired. It was released much later with the DVD box set. The second episode 'Train Job' was actually aired as a pilot. Whedon scripted it in a way that it would re-introduce most of the characters and the situation without too much fanfare. It plays just as well as a second episode.

Serenity aired Dec 20, 2002, shortly after Fox told the news to Joss. The 3 episodes extra were Trash, Message (last episode filmed) and Heart of Gold (last scene filmed, a pick up scene directed by Joss's partner Tim Minear).

The network was just stupid and thought the pilot was too slow and wouldnt keep people interested in the show so their basically ruined the pilot by airing it later on after you already knew all the characters. So when it did air you knew Simon was part of the crew, could assume River was in the box, and knew the random extra guy was the law man.

At the start of the show, Mal side is winning & he was a man of faith & happy (kissing his cross), but his leader decide to surrender anyways. This caused him to lose his faith and be (as you said_)"grumpy".

You almost have to be Cold war to know what a Crazy Ivan is, it was the 180 turn, not whatever they did with the fuel. Soviet Boomers (Nuclear missile subs) used to do a quick 180 to see if American Attack subs were on their six, their ass.
