For those who don't know, there was later information released about Inara's back-story. SPOILER BELOW - ONLY FOR THOSE WHO NEED THE MYSTERY SOLVED: It was later revealed by Joss and/or the writers that Inara was sick. She had an incurable, fatal, yet non-transmissable illness, and when she was diagnosed (at one of the annual screenings, as portrayed off-screen in "Ariel") she decided to leave the guild-hall and see what she could of the 'verse with the time she had left. This is also why she would never let Mal get too close. She (obviously) loved him desperately, but refused to be a weight around his neck.
@LightningRaven425 күн бұрын
Shit. That plot line was going to hit so hard later on. Fuck me. I trust they would've reworked it at some point before it was revealed if the series kept going. Because they might've had those plans initially before the series started, but they could pivot before addressing that storyline in full. Inara definitely did not deserve that (and miraculous cures could feel cheap and hollow).
@QuickdrawMcShawthe1st5 күн бұрын
It was also stated that she had a planned exit in season two that would have come full circle to the syringe we see when they are sneaking by the reavers. As stated, the syringe was something given to all Companions as a deterrent from someone forcing themselves on them. Once injected, anyone who got 'too close' to them would die. Whedon stated it would have played out where the ship was being boarded by reavers and Inara blocked off the ship with her (injected) between the reavers and the crew. Once the crew was able to unseal the area they would find the reavers had killed Inara but the injection had killed the reavers and saved the crew. Either by this point we would have known about her terminal illness or it would have come up as a result of the event.

I just posted this up a bit higher. Something I just realized while watching this reaction. She is deciding to leave so Mal does not have to watch her die. I actually really liked the scene with Jane and the hooker, talking about the battle plan, and what he needed her to do. I know they end the scene with more "now let's have sex" humor, but the breakdown of him explaining what he needed her to do so he could most effectively defend them, was actually really nicely done in my opinion. It reminded me of the similar scene in Saving Private Ryan, when the one soldier is explaining to .....Oppum? The translator guy, how he needed him to be on point when it came to distributing the ammo, or they die. And you can see it on her face that she's taking it seriously. And I actually really liked how Jane was being 100% serious. He wasn't trying to blow smoke up her ass, he wasn't trying to make himself seem like a hero, he was being very mechanical, technical, and strategic about it. "I need these things to happen in order, without having to think about it, because I'm going to have at BEST, a few seconds between weapon swapping, to get back to firing without exposing us. So if you can save me those 2-3 seconds between swaps, that gives us even more coverage, and more likely to survive." It's one of the few times that Jane wasn't just being a default jackass in the show.

It is a nice character moment for Jayne.
@erikbjelke44113 күн бұрын
And I love the smash cut from Book's "No one's gonna die" to Jayne's "There's people gonna die." Not just because it's funny, but because of how true to their characters it is. Book obviously knows people are going to die, even if the defenders do perfectly, a lot of the attackers are going to die, but he's limiting that definition for the time being to the defenders, and giving them (probably false) hope, but trying to reassure them. The idea that, if you go into a battle thinking you're going to die, you'll probably be right, but if you decide you're going to live, you might be right. Jayne, on the other hand, is dealing only in harsh reality, and bracing his companion for it as best he can, literally telling her "the most important thing you can do is keep your head." He's a self-absorbed jackass, but he's not a bad man.

That scene between Mal and Inara, when Mal comes in to see Nandi dead. That brilliant scene with the incredible unspoken conversation. Some of the best facial acting I've ever seen. It showcases both how talented Nathan and Morena are, as well as how in sync Mal and Inara are. This episode also gives a huge amount of context as to why Mal is so snarky with Inara. We see Inara sobbing after she finds out that Mal slept with Nandi, and that's the first time she TRULY confronts her feelings for Mal. But Mal has had to confront his feelings for Inara the same way many times already. Doesn't make his attitude toward or treatment of her right, but it DOES provide an explanation.
@Oleoay5 күн бұрын
I think there are scenes where Inara does confront her feelings, such as throughout Our Mrs Reynolds when she gets upset she's married, when she's worried he was killed and when she expects Mal to kiss her at the end of Our Mrs Reynolds. I actually don't think she's sobbing because she's confronting her feelings but because she's just so upset that she's unable to act on her feelings. I do agree though that the facial acting is amazing, you can see Mal turn into an avenging angel and Inara giving him her blessing to take out Burgess.

That’s what I came here to say. That scene with Inara and Nandi’s body is one of my favorites of the series. It's a bit more complicated than that. Even if Inara had admitted feelings, as Mal said in War Stories, shipboard relationships complicates things. If they have an argument, it's not like she or he can take a walk around the block or move out to somewhere else that easily in the middle of space. In addition, if he had vocalized feelings for her, he knew it would've complicated him taking her to planets where she could get work even further and also jeopardized her paying him, which is money he uses to keep Serenity flying and the crew paid. Best line of the whole series: I wonder who’s in there? A funny line at first glance, but very existential upon reflection. There is a world of possibilities whenever a child is born as to what kind of person it will become. Who is in there, indeed? A lot of interesting things going in this episode. One minor thing that is overlooked I think concerns Wash and his character development over the season. The fight in Serenity with Wash shooting at Burgess’ thugs couldn’t have happened earlier in the season. Wash did not use guns. He used their hauling mech (The Mule) against Niska’s thugs in episode 2. But it wasn’t until War Stories that Wash was motivated to become comfortable and confident wielding a firearm. This allowed him to protect Kaylee and to somewhat balance his relationship with Zoe. He can understand more of what her life is like, bringing them closer together. That makes the discussion about having a child possible because their relationship has grown.

I'd never really picked up on what Inara tells Mal at the end. The "strength of Nandi's love for her family kept them together", and it's something that you don't want to leave if you're experiencing it. She's implying that the Captain has the same sort of love for his crew, for his family, and that's why Inara has been staying. But she left Sihnon for a reason, because there was something keeping her back from becoming a Mother Superior to the Companion Guild, and that same something is making her decide to make a break from this new family she's almost a part of. Also, I read Mal's words to Nandi, that they're the only ones in the room, as reassurance. Nandi thought she might be a stand-in for Inara, and Mal says, no, I'm with you, and (at least for the moment) has put Inara out of his mind. I think his personal code of morals would not allow him to think of one woman while being with another.

It was not until the Complete Series” DVD came out in December 2003 that fans got to see those last few episodes. I love people's reaction to Inara calling Nandi's girls whores. Her use of the word illustrates Mal's problem with the Alliance. If you're not part of the establishment, The Guild in this case, you're nothing. It also sheds light on why Mal calls Inara a whore as an insult.
@Roguefem765 күн бұрын
It is kind of bizarre that she says that instead of prostitutes or even hookers. Accurate though the word may be, it's inelegant, and when is Inara ever inelegant?
@Audra19645 күн бұрын
Yes, and in Out of Gas, when they met, Inara stated that she had supported Unification. That must have been like a punch in the gut to Mal. Add that to the mixed messages he gets from her and it’s understandable why he’s so conflicted about his own feelings.

@Educated2Extinction5 күн бұрын
That was the central theme of the show. The war was fought over it. Jaynestown was built on it. It was illustrated in the Alliance's indifference to the lost medicine in The Train Job. There was the contrast between Ariel and the other worlds they visited, as well as on Persephone between Eavesdown Docks and the ball in Persephone City.

I find that so few writers are brave enough to write a character so wholly irredeemable as Rance Burgess is. From the literal second he appears on screen your entire being wants nothing more than to see him die, preferably in as much pain as possible. Shout out to the actor who, as needed to be the case, played him straight from the page. He's not cool, he's not badass, he's not funny or charming, he is just (as the kids say) the worst. I miss villains like Rance Burgess, you just don't get that same cathartic endorphin hit from the defeat of a villain who "kinda has a point".

You said "I do enjoy the way that Serenity is a character on the show". You're gonna LOVE the last episode. I'll tell you a secret that's not a spoiler because it never got revealed or fully developed. Mal is VERY attracted to Inara and would really like to start a relationship. Inara is so head over heels in love with Mal that she can't stand being around him without being intimate, but she's avoiding a relationship at all costs. Mal really has no idea that Inara loves him so much. Telling you the reason why Inara won't have a relationship with Mal would be telling you a major spoiler, though there is a huge clue in the last episode that no one recognizes.
