And those who named their daughters "Daenerys" , "Khaleesi", etc. Do you think these girls will get bullied at school for having a name from a tv show/book?
@DrSwiftkiller
@DrSwiftkiller 4 жыл бұрын
Girls with the latter name would most likely to be mocked both because of the horrible in hindsight reputation of the TV show (not the books) and because others do not see it as a name at all (it's a title). As for the former, it is a name and girls can salvage it by either nicknaming or renaming themselves as "Dani". If anything, blame the parents for such a selfish parenting move.

A Korean subscriber saying hi. Korean names are a little different. My full name, pronounced in English is Sohn Sang Won. We use our last names first, thus Sohn is my last name and Sang Won is my first name. Most Koreans use 3 Chinese characters as their names. The last names generally don't mean anything, and just differentiates the families. The first name is the part that has meaning. As each Chinese letter means something different names can mean many different things, even if they are pronounced the same. My name, Sang Won, means 'the origin of everything auspicious'. I know, it sounds like something from ancient Chinese books, but that's how names are around here🙃 Some people may wonder why we use Chinese letters instead of Korean. Chinese is a little like Latin in Asian countries. Most countries still use them in their every day language, I'm sure a lot of them use Chinese names as well. An increasing number of Koreans are using pure Korean words for their names though. Maybe several generations later it will be Korean words that make up the majority of names instead of Chinese.

It's kinda frustrating that for many names given, their meaning still remains unknown to the named one. Like, who, named as Alexander, know what the name actually means? Well, to get rid of your curiosity it comes from the greek words "άλεξ"= to protect and "άνδρας"= man. So the name Alexander for example means the protector of men. But what else should be expected when Americans name their daughters Abcde?

And the parents either think it's all about them, or they think they're ever so clever. They don't stop to think that this kid has to go through life through to old age explaining to everybody how to pronounce it and how to spell it. If your kid is going to have to do that, don't be a jerk - just give them a name that isn't going to haunt them the rest of their lives.

Great video as always! My name is Corbin and I was born in 94. My parents chose the name from Corban, a word used in the bible meaning a sacrifice to god or gift. I do believe that the definition of my name has manifested itself in my life in strange ways. So when my son was born (on my birthday of all days). My wife and I named him Baron as we hope he will be strong, brave, and noble in his actions.

Somewhat unrelated but I found it funny that sometimes the common folk gave their monarchs nicknames. Charles “the Fat” and “the Great.” Aethelred the Unready. Robert “the Fox”. Could you possibly do a video on royal nicknames throughout the centuries? Modern monarchs don’t seem to get common nicknames like this outside the royal family.

I remember a woman saying once, long before I had kids, to be careful what you name your kids bc they will grow into it. Fast forward many years and I had forgotten that. I named my daughter Alanna, meaning "rock". And that girl is absolutely like a rock in every way, unmovable, unshakable, hard, tough and strong. she's been that way since she was a baby. She wasnt even a particularly cuddly baby either. Then my son, Adam, "of the earth". He has steadfastly wanted to be a farmer from a very young age. It wasnt until lately that I remembered her saying that. My daughter is grown and my son is just eight so it will be interesting to see how it plays out but so far Im a believer!

I don't rightly know what my name says *about* me, but I understand clearly why I got it. "Nicholas" is a name that runs in my family a little, plus the facts that 1) it was the name of the obstetrician that Mom & dad worked with, who became a close friend, and 2) one of my Dad's favorite writers was Greek author Nikos Kazantzakis. It was moderately common and therefore, they thought, easy to live with. (They did not, alas, reckon with what "Nick" rhymes with, when I became rthe victim of childhood bullying.) Origin-wise, it's a Greek-derived name fairly well-used in Christianity, shared with a couple of saints (most notably one), several popes, some Russian monarchs, and a number of minor figures in pop culture.

We must never forget that Meg Griffin, of Family Guy fame, got her name when Peter crossed out what had been written on the birth certificate and replaced it with "Megatron." This sort of hjjinks probably happens way more often than you may realize. Like the name "Willard" which can't be intentional. But at least with Megatron you can just go by Meg and raise few questions, if you choose to go by Mitt, for example, leaving many to wonder how you get to Mitt from Willard.

In México something interesting happened around 90's and 2000's, many parents started to name their children as "Brayan" and Kevin, especially humble families, (due to popular musicians, movies, etc.) maybe to give their children that distinction of having a foreigner name, still this happened so fast and so massively, and was so "gringo wannabe" that nowadays when those children are on their 20s it is quite shocking seeing someone with hispanic last names and the "latin look" with those names (this doesn't happen with other foreigner names that arrived more slowly like "Ivan", "Vladimir" or "Grecia") sadly, as this became popular among humble families many of this children ended up as thiefs or worst, so nowadays those names in México are related to poverty, wannabe gringo, and criminals. I've personally met a couple of Kevins and they are just normal nice people, but one can't help thinking "I'm sorry man"

I was named after my maternal great grandma, she was originally Maria and after coming to the US it was changed to Marie. I didn't know that until I looked her up on the Elis Island website and saw how her mother wrote her name (she was 3 1/2) and I was surprised, it was never talked about and I don't even think my gram or mom knew. Before she passed she threw away her original birth certificate, she had some dementia that wasn't recognized so she threw a few things away that we can't replace. The rest of my maternal family has either, Irish, German or French names. They're all pretty normal but my mom was named after my maternal grandmas youngest sister and the spelling is very rare, it's Marylyn. usually it's spelled with an i not 2 y's. My hubby and I named our son Nikola, he's french canadian and greek so we wanted something that his french speaking family could say easily and something that wasn't a blah english name. We both liked Nikola which is greek as well as other languages, but we didn't name him until we saw him, we had a list and when we saw it we were like, oh he's definitely a Nikola. I like the fact that he has choices when it comes to nicknames.

Growing up in Scotland in the 1960s we didn´t have so many names. First sons were often named after the father, and the most popular names were still biblical - like John, James, Thomas, Peter and Paul - reflecting Scotland´s religious heritage. There were still a few boys named after former kings, like Charles, George, David, Henry, Robert or William, but this was becoming less fashionable. But so many people had the same name that it was often necessary to differentiate with nicknames - like Johnny, Jimmy, Tommy/Tam, Bobby/Rab/Rob, Stevie, Willie and Pete - and, if that wasn´t enough, adjectives related to size would be added like wee Jimmy, big Tam. Thanks in part to English and American TV and cinema influence in the 60s and 70s, traditional Scottish names like Angus, Douglas, Fergus, Stewart or Hugh started to die out, to be replaced with names like Gary, Jeff, Shane and Kevin. I was always of the opinion that those poor kids lumbered with bad names had a millstone round their necks for life. It certainly seemed to me that, even as a teenager, that names definitely helped shape who we become: all Steves and Johnnies seemed to be cool for some reason - star football striker, casanova, or school bully; while every Cecil, Charles or Julian seemed fated to a life of ridicule, forced to keep a low profile, athletically inept, head buried in books.
