Fireplace Scene Time Lapse | Animation Speedpaint |

A commission for Uselessfishcosplay on instagram!
They wanted a partially animated illustration, and because I was interested in doing more work like this, I decided to record a time lapse for better pricing estimation going forward. Total time was around 42 hours (based on recorded footage), but I believe I could reduce it to around 30 hours with little to no quality loss now that I have a better feel for this stuff (and based on the assumption a character reference sheet will be provided).
Overall a fun animation that I enjoyed making!

What do you use to animate? Your one of my idols and this content makes me realize what I wanna be able to do in my life and I wanna be able to start now

If you look at the very top of the video you can see the programs they’re working in. (As well as an icon at the top right) So far all I see is Photoshop and Aftereffects. Just forewarning, photoshop can be a bitch to animate in. An easier alternative on the Adobe suite is “animate” which is vector based (used to be known as “flash”), and it’s recommended for learning animation on. However if you want those textured brushes and painterly feel, photoshop or Clip Studio Paint (EX) is where you want to go (or Blender, for the grease pencil). It just depends on your budget and program comfort. For me, I learned on flash, transitioned to photoshop for a few weeks, then left for CSP (adobe was getting too pricey for me). However the process of frame by frame animation is pretty much the same in all programs, and most use similar if not same tools. So just look at what you can afford and what seems easiest to learn for you and go for it! :)

But amidst the darkness and despair, there was a glimmer of hope. Each morning, as the twisted sun rose above the twisted world, a rainbow would appear in the sky. And from this rainbow, a voice like that of an angel sang, filling the hearts of the people with a small measure of comfort. And as the song ended, sugar would fall from the sky, a sweet reminder that amidst the horror, there was still beauty to be found. But for the medics, there was no respite from their curse. They were forever trapped in a land where the very sky seemed to mock their plight, a never-ending nightmare from which there was no escape.

A: the background is beautiful and the characters are so cool. B: I have a quick question. When animating I seem to have this problem where I can’t keep things the same size. Like I did some lip sync practice (it was bad but it was my first time so I’m still proud) and the head just got smaller and smaller because I was trying to make it all movements. Do you have any tips for stopping this or is it just practice?

I'm curious about the use of PS timelines. Is that just to help the drawing of frames or is there a particular reason to go in-depth with the animation there before taking it to AE? And is there a particular way it carries over to AE? I remember trying to make simple gifs with PS years ago and it was sub-optimal.

my method of animating in photoshop isn't something I'd recommend for someone looking to learn animation. I just do the handdrawn stuff in photoshop, render it as a png sequence (or sometimes render each "layer group" individually) and composite in after effects
