Sri Marianmman Temple is the oldest Hindu temple in Singapore. The temple was built out of wood and attap in 1827 by one of Singapore’s first successful Indian businessman, Narayana Pillai. Located in the heart of Chinatown, the temple’s ornamental tower entrance or gopuram has been a landmark to generations of Hindu worshippers and Singaporeans alike.
The temple is built in honour of Mother Goddess Sri Mariamman. Theemithi (Firewalking Ceremony) is one of the main festivals celebrated at Sri Mariamman Temple. It is held annually in October/November.
