I live in downtown. This year was extremely mild for fireworks. Last year with the riots, nightly fireworks began around June first and lasted until mid-July. I got used to the sound of bombs suddenly going off, usually between 10 pm and 3 am. Last year's Fourth sounded like a warzone, there were constant near, far and medium-distance explosions all night. The air reeked of sulfur. Walking home a few blocks, I could NOT find one single street that did not have people in parking lots setting off large, professional grade fireworks meant to be set off over a big pond or a huge field.

@Derek I’m from the US… I’m still a US citizen but I work for the UN… I really only go back “home” for a month out of the year just so I could avoid paying an extra 20% in taxes for giving up my citizenship. Unfortunately that social security number they stamp on you like a cow follows you everywhere you go. What do I look like moving to a real country like Canadá, which is ahead of the US in everything except military power, and having to pay their taxes PLUS the United States tax even if I relinquished my citizenship… that’s why you trumptards argument of “if you dont like it then leave” always makes me laugh. Americans are some of the most primitive thinking societies I’ve ever had to deal with.

Some people just don’t realize how powerful those mortars are in order to reach the heights they do, there was a fatality in last 24 hours because a mortar had been shot sideways toward him, and he was pronounced dead after arriving at hospital….these are wonderful spectacles but the level of danger has been seen many many times over and over again. No one hurt in this incident thank gosh

Well I appreciate the likes and the intelligent comments….. just be careful with fireworks, actually my family had owned a stand in Utah til we moved to California. I have a mortars and rockets but I never seen a rocket shoot that straight with that much of a concussive report, at least without influencing the direction in some way.. Depends how you look at it. About 10,000 fireworks injuries that result in hospital visits here per year. Figure 200 people per state, per year. Deaths are extremely rare. Meanwhile there are over a half million kitchen-related ER visits every year, close to 400,000 from knives alone lol. Nearly 500 people in the USA died in kitchen accidents last year. The reason the fireworks make the news is because the municipalities WANT it to make the news.

So make them illegal state-wide. Consider banning 'safe & sane' ones too. No more fires, missing digits or limbs or property damage. Make importing commercial fireworks a felony. We have people celebrating a holiday with, essentially, cut down sticks of dynamite and commercial fireworks without the training and safety protocols professionals use. Every holiday my neighborhood sounds like a war zone and the Sheriff's Department's 'firecracker patrol' was MIA. Zero enforcement.
