Though I would ask a bit more to educate yourself further. There's an idea of America having allies and adversaries, but it does need to be asked, "what makes a nation an ally and makes one an adversary?" In the case of Iran, they became our adversary after we overthrew their democratically chosen government. Many Central American countries became American adversaries because they wanted more control over their natural resources. You could look to China as being an ideological adversary considering that they're communist but we have a strong economic relationship with them. Russia is considered an adversary even though Soviet Russia fell and could be another large trading partner. They have imperialistic goals that threaten Eastern Europe, but so does Israel in the Middle East and they are considered an ally. Asking these questions helps understand what fuels America's foreign policy. Trump will have to answer to those goals. He could establish peace in the Middle East, but does that align with America's goals? He could end Russian aggression against Ukraine but would that serve American interests?
@coreyham3753Ай бұрын
@@nrXic You raise some great points. The US has certainly made many foreign policy mistakes over many decades and certainly has quite varying policy stances. The middle east is literally an open wound that has been going on for over a 100 years now with little hope of any resolution any time soon. Russia v. Ukraine is a serious problem probably an even more serious issue with numerous problematic consequences. But Kori Schake has, in my view, little to offer in the way of solid advice or commentary. Her view that Chump actually accomplished much of anything at all is laughable. 1) higher military spending, 2) Abraham Accords, and 3) stronger China policies. None of those is of much effect or much of an accomplishment at all.

She says we are still recovering from the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq and the 2008 crash. In other words, the LAST Republican president.
@thomasw.5344Ай бұрын
I think that analysis is spot on and people as diverse as Timothy Snyder and Steve Bannon would agree. But it's not a question of partisanship. I think the Obama administration equally messed things up by bailing out the banks and trying to negotiate with a russian dictator in progress, who has nothing but disregard and contempt for ideals. The cultural magnetism Ms Schake talks about is what won the world, not Korea not Vietnam, not even the collaps of so-called communism.

The conditions for the 2008 crash were set up at the end of the Clinton administration when Republicans and Democrats worked together to repeal Glass-Stegall and enact the Commodity Futures Modernization Act, which turned Wall Street into a casino. But yeah, Bush 'gave' us the 20 year Afghan war and the Iraq debacle.

States in the Gulf region are dependent on oil production. When prices drift lower, it strains relations in OPEC partners. All of their conflict is over market dominance. Eastern Europe is a major agricultural asset. If Russia takes it, that will suck. If Iraq attacks Israel, the destruction will exceed all of the past year. Unacceptable
