thanks for the video. I'm a healthy 51 year old with a full thickness rotator cuff tear dominant right arm with left arm showing signs also. worked aloft for a major phone company most of my life so the wear and tear has caught up with me. i think the biggest thing I've learned with this surgery is just how different every individual case is. there is usually some other work done at the same time depending on wear and tear and build up of scar tissue, spurs, biceps tenodesis, and other things. I just reached my 9th day and finally got a good night's sleep last night. I couldn't tame the aching pain long enough with ice, percocet, naproxen, Tylenol to stay asleep for very long. I understood it would be painful, but I didn't consider that sleep deprivation would be my biggest problem. I stopped the percocet a few days in when I realized it wasn't going to help me stay asleep. I borrowed a recliner as well but just couldn't sleep in it. for me, any pressure on my shoulder blade would cause great pain a lot of the time. I don't have an ice machine but I would get one knowing what I know now just to try it although icing things down didn't always relieve the pain as the tenderness of the incision sites would sting with the cold temps early on. I chose not to get the nerve block and don't regret it, my surgeon told me that professional athletes usually don't get it because they feel the risks don't outweigh the rewards. My pain wasn't any worse the first day than 3 days in so the nerve block wouldn't have changed anything for me. I don't like the idea of not feeling my arm, seems it would be easier to damage the repair. for some, the pain subsides a few days in, for others, like me, it can last much longer. get an electric toothbrush if it's your dominant arm, get an arm sling that doesn't put pressure on your neck like a donjoy ultrasling iv (4), get a wedge pillow for your bed, subscribe to extra streaming services, go to Costco and buy a bunch of easily prepared foods, get a few pairs of sweat pants, get some slip on shoes, get some long sleeve cotton shirts so your sling won't get stinky as often, get a haircut right before surgery, hide all weapons from your spouse, they will want to use them on you after a few days. good luck to all, especially on your first 2 weeks because even though I got good sleep after 8 days, I'm still experiencing a good amount of pain. This may be less painful than childbirth or passing kidney stones but this pain can last much longer. I like this video because it's more realistic for my case. I am sick of watching videos of people doing so well so soon after surgery making me feel like something is going wrong with my recovery.

your situation was exactly same as mine currently is. two half weeks now and still incredibly painful. haven't even gotten dressed since surgery because more difficult for women ie undergarments! slept in bed since discharge with pillow under shoulder and arm - no sling on as i always felt i was being strangled by it. hope you are doing better. good luck with your continued recovery.

I am on day #8 and I have to tell you I don't know what is worse... The pain, the TRYING to sleep sitting up.. or this friggin sling w/the attached pillow that makes me feel like a have a 7yr old child permanently attached to the right half of my body!! I'm hoping on my 2 week follow-up he tells me I no longer need the sling or that I can at least remove the "pillow" from it!!

lol I ignored my tear for a month and went back to playing golf a lot . Saw a doctor after 3 months , she said let’s check it out . Supraspinatus completely torn off bone , infra spinatus torn , labrum torn and bicep torn . I decided to see surgeon. So now before I get surgery my OTHER shoulder is acting just like the shoulder needing surgery. Yeesh not looking forward to the next 8 months. I got myself able to use arm and now pain pain pain will be in future . Sucks to get old but beats alternative.

I’m having RC surgery next Friday. Your video was very helpful. I know you have already had your surgery, but some thing I read that I’m going to try is when I’m taking a shower I’m taking one of those extra large pool noodles, cut a piece off and tie a strap or string through it and wear it like you would a cross body purse. It’s basically about the same thickness as the pillow so you don’t have to worry about getting a towel wet. Maybe somebody else reading these comments will find that tip to be helpful.

This is a good video because I've experienced the same as Nate. I had a full tear of my supraspinatus and infraspinatus. It was really bad that the doctor thought they weren't going to be able to fix my shoulder. The first week and a half was painful, but after that, I started to do some things on my own, but was very quickly reminded when I moved to fast or made a movement I shouldn't have. Even riding in a car hurt whenever we hit a bump. Something that helped me out when taking a shower was buying a mesh sling from amazon. I also asked my wife to buy me a ball that I can deflate. I have been using a kickball that I deflated to put between my bicep and the side of my body to keep my arm in the same position as my sling. I heard of using towels, but I thought they would get too heavy, absorbing all the water. I do use the ice machine also and it's great. It is tought getting dressed on my own. I'm now able to do it but it takes a long time because you do need to watch how you move your arm if not you will get that sharp pain. Tying my sneakers is very hard to do. It is painful to reach over to the opposite side of the surgery to lace up your sneakers. As of right now, the hardest thing for me to do is sleep. I've been in the recliner now for two weeks and it sucks. Besides sleep, I've seen improvement and I'm looking forward to pushing through my painful therapy to be able to play golf, lift weights and play basketball again. I'm going into my third week this week. Good luck to everyone.

I watched your video out of desperation due to post surgery high pain levels. Excellent video. I just had rotator cuff surgery yesterday. I didn't fully understand how much pain I would experience, when it would be worst, and when the pain would get lower. I found that the doctor really didn't prepare me well. You provided an excellent road map for what I can expect. Today the pain blocking meds given to me during the surgery completely wore off and I hit a 9-10 pain level. I felt quite panicked. I had been fearful of taking too many Codeine pills, but after this incident I went for the max as well as Tylenol and Advil. Thank goodness within 45 min the pain started dropping, down to a 3. I also have an ice pump, which rocks. You have also eased some of my anxiety about PT, which starts in 2 weeks. Thank you very much, Ed

Completely tore my rotator cuff 4 yrs. ago. I’ve given birth 3 x, 2 C-sections, ovarian cyst removed, repair surgery for broken hand, all of those combined were not as painful as my Rotator cuff surgery 😢, I didn’t start my pain meds as prescribed, because the nerve block gave me a false sense of security, but oh boy, when that block wore off, I was in AGONY, took me a week on pain meds to get the pain under control, that being said, I found great relief by using a TENS unit! I swear by that thing!

Not nearly as bad as everyone said beforehand. Extensive surgery. Eight anchors, spurs removed. Torn bicep. I'm 80 yrs old and have a high pain tolerance but this was really easy compared to the bunionectomy I had years ago. One oxycodone the first night. One Tylenol the second night. Yes. The sling is irritating. But not worse than having 4 kids in 4 years...especially when they're all in their teens!🤣🤣

Your video is very informative and educational. I have a full thickness tear with retraction to the level of AC joint. The Supraspinatus tendon. Next the infraspinatus tendon full thickness tear with retraction of AC joint. Finally an interstitial tear with edema tracking back into the muscle. Tomorrow will be my last day of 6 weeks of P.T. This has helped some with range of motion. But there are certain directions it hurts to move my arm. I will find out what my orthopedic doctor decides after this. I already know about the severe pain of rotator cuff repair is all about. As a retired LVN I have taken care of patients who had this surgery. I tore my tendons just by grabbing a pole on the porch steps to prevent a fall. The Supraspinatus was partially tore before 10 years ago due to a fall on a motorcycle that was not even moving. I had therapy back then and it healed itself. But this time I don't think this rotator cuff injury is going to heal itself. This happened last August 14th of 2021. So I understand that this process is going to take a LONG time. Also I have atrophy of the associated muscles of the shoulder over the years. What caused this I don't know. All I can do is stay brave and take it one day at a time. Patience is a vurtue.

iv had both shoulders done eight years apart.. full tear rotator cuff and bone spurs removed. Some notes. Nerve block is a must to avoid the immediate 40 hours of post op pain. Start taking the strong opiods, I did 10mg hydrocodone every six hours.. and started at at 24 hour to get ahead of nerve block wearing off. also important to have an water/ice cold machine for the first week as much as possible which greatly manages pain.

I had my right rotator cuff surgery and bicep repair done on Dec 5, 2023. I stopped my opioid pain meds at the end of day 5. I don't have pain though it's uncomfortable when it's been out of the sling for longer than it's used to at this point. I was given permission to leave the sling off when I'm at home as long as I don't use it to do anything. Harder than it sounds. I'm on day 17.

My surgery is in one week. I've heard others also talk about using a cheap sling while taking a shower. Another idea I came across was to place a small squishy ball under the arm while showering to reduce some of the pressure on the shoulder. This may sound silly, but I've been trying different everyday chores with one arm to prepare myself. Zipping and buttoning jeans does not work so pull-on sweatpants are in order.
@ginnyguyer56799 ай бұрын
The best advice I had prior to surgery was to start using my non-dominant arm to do everything. I learned how to put on my socks and dress myself as well as many other daily activities. It felt strange to do some of those things, but I am so glad I did! I am currently 9 days post-op on rotator cuff and biceps repair surgery. I was only on the heavy duty pain meds for 3 days, and Tylenol only for 2 days. I haven't had any pain meds at all for 3 days now. I got my stitches out yesterday, and they already removed the pillow from my sling and have changed the sling position to being more directly against my side. I think what surprised me most was that they gave me three simple exercises to start doing as soon as the nerve block wore off the day after surgery!

Purhased a cheaper mesh sling for shower. Slept in the recliner maybe first 2 weeks, hard to get comfortable, now with wedge pillow, reading pillow, and other pillows in bed. Sleeping is improving. Per doctor instructions, pendilum swings, elbow, wrist and hand exercises at home, then start PT in a week. Looking forward to continued recovery in the months to come and back to active lifestyle. @@SuperHowyalikemenow I think it’s a matter of semantics. There was clearly a set a set of criteria, which I met, which marks a “full recovery”. My take is that I met the surgery success criteria and, therefore, made a “full recovery”, but that doesn’t mean that I’m where I was preinjury. I’m definitely not as flexible or have the same range of motion that I did. But, that doesn’t mean that the surgery wasn’t successful.

I got an MRI and was required by my hesitant to pay insurance company (which we could all do without and just replace with good health care) to do 10 sessions of PT which only aggravated my shoulder. According to the MRI, it was just tendinosis. I had surgery 2 days ago and the surgeon removed a burr causing impingement, and repaired a severe bursa inflammation, a partial rotator cuff tear, and labral tear. The surgeon wasn't even aware of the extent of the damage until he inserted the arthroscope. I don't know how much more damage was caused by PT but with the amount of pain I was experiencing and the limited motion, I believe I should have just had the surgery instead of having to waste out of pocket money for that PT.

Thank you for posting and being so honest. I have been in pain for 2 1/2 years, not sure what caused my tear, I’m not the most grateful so potentially a fall. I had a colonoscopy and when I woke up I could barely lift my arm, went to my General practitioner who told me I had arthritis, I believed her but still kept thinking this can’t be right so after 21/2 years I went to an orthopedic surgeon who confirmed it was not arthritis, but a tear in my rotator cuff, I started physical therapy, which helps a little, I’m scheduling an outpatient surgery to get it repaired, I’m scared!!!

I get it. And it's a long, slow process to recovery so it's definitely worth trying PT first. For the record, I don't regret having the surgery. It was something I needed to do. But, just to manage expectations, IMO, the use of the terminology "full recovery" is a bit loaded. I met that criteria for them to say that, fairly early on, long before I was fully healed. And I wouldn't say that my shoulder is as good as it was prior to the injury, but definitely a WHOLE LOT BETTER than it was prior to the surgery. I don't mean to sound negative at all. Again, the surgery was definitely worth it for me. But, I wish I had a little more realistic expectations as to what the outcome would be so I thought I'd share. Hope that helps and best wishes to you for as painless a recovery as possible.

Very well done! Had the same surgery on September 29, 2022. The only thing I would like to add is my surgeon said not to ice down the injury site. He claims ice slows down the healing process. With the amount of pain you can experience from this type of surgery any relief is welcome. Just like the pain block and medications is not good to take for extended periods, but is necessary to get you to full recovery.

I'm almost two weeks post-op. No nerve block. First 2 days were not fun, maybe 7 out of 10 painwise. Then down to 2. Mostly Tylenol 4 times a day, but also something called norco and a stool softener. Sleeping has sucked royally, even with a recliner. I slept more sitting upright than lying back in the recliner. Never more than 30 minutes at a time. Last night I slept an hour straight in bed and it felt great.

I got the approval after a couple of weeks of the sling..I think my Drs wanted me to do small at home exercises so that the arm wouldnt get too stiff over those first few days ( which it has,) so I'm slowly trying to work that stiffness out..I've learned to sleep without the sling at nite ( lying on my back using a pillow) but I do wear the sling when I'm out so people won't hit my shoulder and I personally don't forget that I'm not fully recovered..

I go for surgery in 4 days and will be prepared, I think, I wish you addressed sleeping. Like you I borrowed a lazy boy with the pull on good arm side. I have minor pain and some difficulty raising arm sideways past 90 degrees but can get it 180, also won’t be scratching my back with the bum arm either. Good tip on the shower sling and rolled towel. Looking forward to golf again without pain. Albeit it may be months away, especially hitting driver. Like you I picked to have surgery done for long term reasons. Once again thanks from Columbus Ohio!

I’m a musician who plays an upright bass and this is a surgery that I’ve put off way too long for fear of losing my “feel”. Though my surgeon tries to assure me, your posting of your own experience carries much more weight. As far as pain levels, I always compare any discomfort I’m in to the pain level I experienced when I had kidney stones (twice), it’s good to know shoulder surgery is rated below that. Lol. @placeoflace Жыл бұрын
@@toryberch It’s 3 weeks tomorrow and I’m doing very well. Started P.T. three days after surgery. (Rough but doable). The first two night were pretty difficult sleeping due to not being able to sleep on my side, so I took sleeping pills those nights but the pain was nowhere near as bad as I thought it was going to be! I was prescribed Oxycodone but only took it the first night, that stuff screws up my digestive habits if you know what I mean. I switched to Tylenol and/or Motrin instead and I only needed that for another week or so. One huge thing to consider is the Ice water/pump machine. It is excellent! I would recommend it to anyone having this or similar surgery. It was about $180. on Amazon but we’ll worth it for me. I had 3 partial tears; bicep, super spinades (I know I misspelled that one) and labrum. Also years of junk cleaned out of rotator cuff socket. All in all not nearly as bad as I was led to believe. I wish you luck and a speedy recovery.

Glad you're showing improvement. I tore the same tendon about 3 weeks ago after falling during a hike. Complete tear. I waited a week to let the shoulder calm down a bit, and realized this injury was more serious than others I've had. I went to an ortho surgeon. We did x-rays and an MRI which confirmed a complete tear. I had surgery on 11/23, and I can attest to the pain levels you describe. The first 2 days post-op were especially bad. Now 4 days out, it is still rough but not as bad. I am taking the hydrocodone/acetaminophen combo, along with Naproxen. I start PT tomorrow. Not looking forward to it, but it must be done. I'm curious as to why your physical therapist didn't recommend your seeing a MD before starting therapy. Seems like a lot of time was wasted in rehab, without you or the therapist knowing what the real issue was that was being treated. Rehab for this injury after surgery is a very long process. My surgeon told me it would be a full year before my shoulder would be completely good to go. I do a lot of hiking and backpacking, so this is quite depressing. I hope your rehab continues to go well, and that you have a complete recovery.
@KentuckyCycling3 жыл бұрын
I think you raise a fair question as to why I wasn't referred to an MD sooner, but I don't think my experience is all that unusual. I think with a partial tear, you really don't know until you get an MRI how bad it is. An MRI typically has to be ordered by a surgeon to have insurance pay for it. And, most people don't want to rush to the idea of surgery. Best wishes for a speedy recovery for you!
