I work at a Petco store and my sister bought this same canister filter for her 110G cubic aquarium. I'm an expert on rodents and felines so when she asked me to help her set it up I began finding any video that I could to try to not have make a watery mess in her living room. Thank you for having made this video, it was very helpful and her tank is now going through its preliminary cycling sans a flooded living room!

I use a Penn-Pax canister filter that I bought on amazon (my first canister too). In their instructions they say to measure out the length of tubing needed and trim it down. So there isn't 2 extra foot of tubing your filter has to pump water through, it's just the bare minimum required. I would recommend doing that too during your next filter cleaning. Filter wont have to work as hard pulling and pumping water through the extra tubing. Also, mine has a primer pump on the lid (looks just like the big round Aqueon labeled part of yours). So when hooking it back up after a cleaning, after I open the valves back into the filter I can press down and purge any air that was trapped. It also served as a siphon starter when I first set it up. Can pump it once and it will fill canister with tank water, then a handful of more presses to get last bit of air out. Also, depending on which way your filter works (bottom up or top down) it should be Mechanical Filtration, then Bio Filtration, and lastly Chemical. For example, my filter is bottom up, meaning it pulls the water to the bottom of the canister and forces its way back up through the trays to the top and back into the tank. So my bottom try has the coarse sponge and some fine biofloss (mechanical), second tray has my ceramic rings and carbon bag (Bio), and my top tray has more biofloss and a bag of Purigen (chemical). I highly recommend the Purigen (Seachem product), not pricey off amazon and does a great job of polishing water. You could even use in the HoBs. I have a 75 gallon African cichlid tank that been running for many years now. Recently bought a powerhead and am using it for surface agitation and to create circular water movement in my tank that kicks up all the detritus off the bottom and pushes it towards my filter intake. Recommend that as well. I saw in your fish naming video that you switched the spraybar for the directional head type output (recently did too after I purchased my powerhead), I installed my powerhead to flow in the same direction as the output head and have seen good results in it moving waste to my filter intake. I bought the Freesea brand (1600GPH) magnetic powerhead on amazon, only $30. Worth taking a look at, especially if your gonna be moving up in tank size and are gonna have more water to move around.

Rock the canister back and forth when it is running to get residual air bubbles out of the canister. That is a good deal you got. I do prefer canister with UV light built in to keep the water crystal clear. I bought my Aquatop CF500UV canister for around $180 from a small business pet store and I love it. Got it a year and a half ago. It has a primer and the valves for the hoses attach to section of the top that is removable and automatically close down the valves leading to the hoses which makes maintenance super easy. You can get some really colorful crayfish at pet stores and online. I had one that was bright orange like a boiled lobster.

If you find yourself wanting something much more quiet, I Recommend the Fluval 07 series canister filter. I have the 407, and I hear the air pump over my filter.
@andrewhudson98732 жыл бұрын
I would definitely recommend trimming the tubing so that you don't have those loops. It will increase your water flow. The noise you hear sounds like you still have some air in the canister. It should go away with time. It may also be dirt trapped in the impeller well. Pulling the impeller out and cleaning it can stop that.

It looks good to me! We ended up putting our canister in a bucket because we had one leak and go all over the carpet in front of the tank. We also put plastic in the bottom of the tank for leak protection as well. I am partial to Oscars as I have two.

Tossing a battery powered leak sensor in the bucket will give you an extra level of protection.

It would be better putting the spray bar along the far left panel of glass, that way it would cause the water to circulate the long way towards the intake and help create less dead zones as well. The way you have the spray bar pointing to the front panel will for sure create a low flow situation for half the tank, along with a number of dead zones on the intake side

So the funny thing about this canister compared to Fluval is apparently this canister manufacture wants you to spend more money on media, so you need to replace the hang on back filter pad and the inside media. Rather than just replace bad media, which really shouldn't be needed but I know in my planted tanks, the hang on back filters go dirty in 1-2 weeks

Definitely cut the hoses. If they’re too long it will push up on the polisher filter and not let it sit level. Yes there is such a thing as too much filter. My buddy over filtered his 55g and he was going through fresh water angelfish like crazy I came over to look at the tank and the current was so intense the fish were like swimming in the current of a river. I had him turn the flow down some and trade his angelfish for some rose line sharks. 2 yrs later his fish are doing good! He has rainbows and some other fish that are more used to lots of current and moving water. Bass are jumpers careful with those. I had a small mouth in a 75g and he knocked the glass lid off jumping and I lost him. He was about 8” long. Pumpkin seeds, sunnies and blue gills aren’t bad and don’t get too massive

For a video that's a couple years old I really wouldn't recommend this brand for a canister filter, I will always recommend either the Fluval 07 series or the FX series for a canister. If you're not a fan of Fluval then I would recommend Sicce Whale series for a canister, I'm a firm believer of you get what you pay for and the Aqueon Quietflow series canisters are one I'm gonna have to pass on.

The only time you can “over filter” is when the flow is too high for your fish. But there’s ways to reduce flow and change currents in the tank. So no you can’t overfill

The fact that our canister filter, aquarium, n gravel looks, or are the same is nuts lol I got a 125 gallon in the same color as urs off Facebook market place for only 700. I like this canister filter cuz it is thin enough to fit in the draw (it's actually a draw attached to the door for a sump or canister). I have it with a spray bar. When I change the media next month, I will install the water polishing units. N yes u CAN over filter water lol I have a hang on the back, sponge filter, n canister filter. however I also have 8 fish, one is a common pleco, n one is an oscar. As they get larger, their bio load (poop) is REDICULOS LOL it look like the damn oscar dropping mini sausages now lol

Question!? Does anyone know the best way to reduce the flow without hurting the unit? I figure the shut off will work but I'm not sure which one is better to adjust.
