Working out the problems with the baler.

I'm glad you took us along to watch the problems. We can learn by watching that. Can't learn as much when everything works well.

Everybody who has baled hay had to bale their first bale. Keep it up and you will be an expert and many people will learn how to bale hay. Very good videos. Thank you Gutentight.

I was excited for you when I saw bales popping out!! When I was a kid the farmer was jacking the baler and the jack slipped. 3 stitches and a broken toe!

I tried using a Case VAC on a John Deere 14T baler for my first try baling (1997)and it just didn't have the horses and umph to do it right. Then bought a New Holland Hayliner and Farmall H and learned to tune the baler so that everything worked right. Baled that way a few years and then bought a Case tractor with live PTO which made baling so much easier. I never tried using plastic twine because everyone here told me sisal would work better in the old baler. Can't imagine that the 8N has enough HP to run a baler unless that Massey is made for low volume baling. After the VAC didn't work for me, I asked around and was told that I needed a 35 or more HP tractor to power the New Holland baler. The last year that I put up square bales, my wife and I baled 3,000 by ourselves. Hooked a hay wagon behind the square baler and I rode the wagon to stack while my wife drove the tractor. Then, she rolled the bales off the wagon onto the elevator at the barn. Lots of good memories.

I might try some other twine after what I have runs out but it works fine after it starts going. The 8N has plenty of power but mine also has a Sherman aux transmission so I have 12 forward speeds, so that will make a difference. Thanks for watching!!

@@HumbleAcres Either twine will work. The key is getting correct tension on the twine coming out of the roll. The plastic twine is slicker and needs to be tightened down a little.

Try and pick up all the bailing twine and remove any from the hay bales. Reason: A cow will continue to eat grass with bailing twine mixed in it and swallow the entire length. The twine will not breakdown in the cows first stomach and it will kill her overtime, about a month and she will be in pain. This happened to a dairy cow I bought at auction she became sick a day or two later, after we put her down we found the bailing twine balled up in the first stomach. Bailing twine is made of plastics and won't breakdown in stomach juice's, so, be careful and you may save a cow from a terrible death.

I have a MF 10 baler, the same baler, but with the newer plunger gearbox. The straggly bales indicate you need to move the plunger slides in for a cleaner bale. The bales should be tight , if the bale dogs are free, and the chocks clean it also helps to make a clean square bale. The baler works best baling tight bales, how it was designed. This requires proper plunger clearances, a sharp plunger knife, and correct tension slide setting. With so few bales, it is difficult to get the settings right. You can still get many parts for this baler unlike a NH, or other brands. Recently I got a bill hook, gathering springs, pick-up teeth . Used parts also are around if you look online. These MF balers were sold world wide , many models had the same parts, why parts are still available.

For the small amount of baling you do, and how little money you have in it that baler and tractor will do fine. Yes not having live PTO isn't great but make due with what you have. The John Deere A you are fixing up has more power and won't get rocked around like that Ford does. I baled plenty of hay with a 25 horsepower Minneapolis Moline "R" as well as a late John Deere model B. Neither one had independent PTO. Pulling wagons (racks) behind as well. As for the baler, getting a manual which you may have (didn't watch all your other vids) and going through those knotters, timing adjustments etc will have it working well. All those balers from back then were much lower capacity than what is made or used now.

Has anyone mentioned that you should sharpen the little knives on the knotter or at least get the rust off them , make the knotter work better .

What model of baler do you use? Is it a #10? Really cool to see you using the old set up.

Right man. Its really cool. I was reading a thread about them and im not sure what twine you use on it. One guy said his number 3 like the 7200. Im just getting into this stuff, my farther has a 8n and wants to get his own baler. Do you use a overrunning clutch on yours?
