Subnautica is an open world, underwater exploration and adventure game currently under construction at Unknown Worlds, the independent developer behind Natural Selection 2.
After crash landing on an alien ocean world, the only way to go is down. Subnautica's oceans range from sun drenched shallow coral reefs to treacherous deep-sea trenches. My 8 year old plays so decisively he learned all the mechanics of the early game within less than 30 minutes and already had his base going within his first hour of play!!!! I couldn't believe it. I am 10 hours in still waffling over location and he has already found some alien portal and has multiple land and water bases on survival. It is amazing 👏 😅

Eclipses are a regular occurrence on 4546b. Almost daily, considering the large "moon" revolves the horizon, and ONLY the horizon. Meanwhile, the smaller earthlike moon maintains not only a full state, but also remains in the Northern sky. Funky astronomy, huh?

tip for Z1 and anyone else playing and reading this, when moving items/tools to your hotbar its easier and quicker to just mouse over the item and hit the corresponding number on the keyboard instead of dragging the item. you can just hit escape and hit the same number then to quickly select and use whatever tool you want.

Tip: you can use platforms under your multipurpose room and it will increase the integrity and hull strength

The bulkhead also increases base structural integrity, but not as much as the reinforcement. early game they help. EDIT: Also kind of fun to create 'airlocks' in your base.

@@gingerale1245 Like in old Sci-fi and deep water shows/movies. A door on the outside, then a chamber, or just a gap here often, and then another door, though I sometimes have to put in 3 or 4 bulkheads in a row, I try to use them sparingly and use the reinforcements more.

Also, just a personal thing, I like to build my base over near the thermal vent, though not right on them, so I can use the thermal power plants later on and the power transmitters to get power to my base.

*SPOILERS* There is this thing I like to call The Lost River Hub or TLRH (Great place to build a base btw) for short, which leads to every section of the lost river, Cove Tree, Alien base, and the Graveyard, it is marked by a Sea Dragon skeleton. There are several thermal vents in that area and i put a Thermal Plant on top of one, like on top where it catches ALL the steam.

Damnit! I really want to watch these but I've just started Subnaticia. I said to myself "no looking up everything. No reading up on the best way to play to the meta of the game" I don't have much of a clue about the base building...but all the fun is in the learning. Bit gutted you can't repurpose the lifepod stuff into your own base but I understand why.

I built my very first base down there, it was great! Right above one of the jellyshroom entrances. You can expand building down into the caves actually, with the vertical tubes.

Marble Mellon has to be replanted every time you pick it up. Lantern fruit just grows. I plant lantern fruit just because I don't have to replant it and I can just go nuts with it. Plus I can kill all the lights in my cyclops and still see with the tree.

i realize i am late to the party but i never build the water proof lockers instead i rush to build a x compartment with a hatch in the top middle and 4 solar panels on the roof. that way i can build a med kit dispenser, fabricator, radio and at least 4 big lockers inside. i find it's a perfect little starter base that i put near the life pod.

When I'm playing Subnautica I like to follow the story and only go to the islands when story gets me there since it's a bit boring to go to the end right away without going through the middle, but that's just my preference.

you can make the most out of space if you use the wall lockers instead of the freestanding lockers. You can fit 3 wall lockers in the space. instead of using 1 locker for the same amount of room. USE WALL LOCKERS THEY GIVE YOU MORE STORAGE IN THE LONG RUN

wall lockers are also good initially for storage, as soon a you get the habitat builder, a few wall locker in a single corridor is way better than wasting titanium on water lockers

Another way to get structural integrity is with bulkheads. You need to build those in an I corridor for some reason.

If I remember correctly, I use the filtration machine for water and salt, then one of those multi-level aquarium thingies with some peepers in so they can breed, then salt them for food. once set up, after a bit of time, you have infinite food and water.

This works and like you say, provides infinite food/water, but the filtration uses a lot of power and the breeding takes a bit of time. If you put 2 indoor growbeds, one with bulbo trees and one with marblemelons, you get infinite food/water at a quicker rate without having to waste energy on it. Just a tip that I ended up stumbling upon in my recent playthrough

It may be 1 year after this was released but I still have to say this, if you need hull integrity early game place down foundations and put your buildings on top of them it doesn’t give as much as reinforcement but it’s good enough for early game
