That's a pity her calving so early nice looking heifer too Earliest one I had was a month early big problem I had was calf was tiny but alive and she had no milk at all so I had no colostrum at all to give her luckily a friend of mine at young farmers had started calving so I got some colostrum off her then I hand reared it for a couple of months

We've had 2 heifers calve so far, put a couple of cows in with them who haven't calved, makes milking them a lot easier

Great video, as usual. Pity about the calf, but it goes with the job, unfortunately. Couldn't believe the cost of that part, ridiculous, and let's hope that rain stops as it can get you down. Anyway, at least you have the warmer weather in a month or two to look forward to. Good luck with the calving, and let's hope that bloody rain stops.

Unfortunately we got another 15mm over night which hasn’t helped, but can’t do much about the weather 🤷

I always pull a second cow or calf to be a pen mate. If you pulled another heifer you could run her thru the routine except for the actual milking. Wish we had your extra rain.

To bad the calf didn't make it all the way to the herd, but very impressive how well she did for the first time milking, wish they all would be that calm.

Great video like always. One time one of my auntie's cows had calved 6 weeks after every one else.

It’s a shame you can’t freeze the colostrum for the upcoming calf’s but it wouldn’t be feasible to I suppose.

Yep you can do that, I just don’t tend to.

Over here in the netherlands we have a severe drought on our hands after a very good first cutting of grass it whent bone dry.. .cows have little to graze and baleprices skyrocket up to 100€ per bale..milkprice is really down over here . How is the prognose of the milkprice in NZ these days?
@TheOnceADayFarmer Жыл бұрын
I feel for ya, that sucks and makes it hard. Our milk price isn’t looking to flash and farm expenses are still high so not looking good either 🤦♂️

Have you a neighbour who is milking that you can give her to for a couple of weeks until you start calving. The same thing happened me here in Ireland last December so my good neighbour took her for a month.
@TheOnceADayFarmer Жыл бұрын
Possibly, everyone’s a bit pushed for grass so not sure if they would want extras 😅

How long can you store colostrum?
@TheOnceADayFarmer Жыл бұрын
Fresh, maybe a couple of days but the longer you leave it the lower quality it gets. You can freeze it how ever which keeps it good.

Grab one of your empty or aborted cows to put in with her during milking or even another pregnant cow. Should help keep her calm and in place properly.
