Hello fellow equestrians! :) After being off for two weeks I finally get to hop back into the saddle! In today's lesson I get to try canter poles for the very first time! We also practice our very first canter course.
All the action is captured on my trusty GoPro, so you can feel like you're right in the saddle with me. So grab your helmet, saddle up, and let's hit the arena together!

Missing a week or two always feels awful! Not only do you miss time doing something so fun, it can sometimes take nearly as much time to get back into the swing of things 😩 Do you ever use voice cues to help with transitions? I think they especially work on a lot of lesson horses really well! (i.e., saying "Canter!" as well as using your legs/seat). Also, I used to be scared of lifting the back legs too 🤣 until I found out that a lot of the stompy/kicky things they do are the horses just stretching their legs up and out!
@RidewithClara

Glad I’m not the only one who feels that way!! 😅 yes I should definitely try and use my voice commands more, the lesson horses are usually pretty good with their voice commands. Hahahaha right!! I’m starting to realize it to and just gotta let them fidget for a second before they get comfortable aha

You did great for it being your first ride back from a tiny break! With your canter seat try to pretend you have a tight seat belt on that’s holding you to the saddle. everyone has those days when they feel like they can't ride don't worry! i would recommend sitting back and stretching more into your heel. based on what you're describing i think you might be scrunching up in your knee a little, try to stretch your leg down and put all your weight into your heel. you could try a bit of no stirrup work if it helps! anyways you're and amazing rider and cantering poles is the beginning of jumping so congratulations!

You did amazing!! One little tip when you want to pick up canter: it seems like ur pulling more from your outside rein. Try to keep an inside bend so he is looking inside the arena while you put your outside leg on. That way they find it easier too!!

Hey! Obvi a lil late but I have some advice babez. If you haven’t ridden in a while and scared to canter, just relax sit back in the saddle and don’t lean forward, lean back because it feels 100x more comfortable, and keeping the stirrups shorter for canter helps A LOT! And of you feel out of rhythm, try relaxing and don’t pull on the reins and lengthen your shoulder (iykyk). Congrats on them poles tho! Great timing and cg on 1.2k SUBS EEEK!! ❤
@RidewithClara

I think it’s good your trainer is putting you on different horses, there all different and you get to experience more personality’s of the horses filo is so cute and I think you did really well near the end but rusty at the start but we all do after a little break. a thing I recommend lots of trainers say different things Abt sitting in your canter if to lean back or forward im sure you know this but it really helped me when I found out {I found out ages ago but I’ve been riding for 8yrs ^^} it’s important to lean back into your seat but keep your back straight and head forward slightly as over time it may hurt the horses back hope this helped 😊

Great job Clara! You’re trot looked amazing!! (Some tips on the canter when you’re rusty below but feel free to not look if you’re uncomfortable) Hi :) just noticed you’re struggle to pick up the canter, and just a teensy bit of advice would to not hold the outside rein, a lot of times horses I ride get mad when you do as it’s asking for them to pick up the wrong lead and causes them to not want to canter for you. Also you can take a minute on the rail to gather yourself together before jumping into the canter, I’ve found it helps me a lot to focus and gather myself before doing a task. great job though for you’re first ride back!!

This ride was so good for not riding for a few weeks. But hears a tip to for riding Filo that I use. Are you sitting or posting the trot when asking for the canter? Because when you post the trot when asking for the canter you telling them to keep trotting and giving them mixed signals. Just a tip.
