Hi Ivica. How do you rate the Class 40’s upwind? I am looking at purchasing the pogo 40 S2 but my sail maker says it will get left behind ina race like the Sydney Hobart due to poor upwind performance. Is he wrong ? Many thanks Chris _ Sydney Australia

Class 40s were built for reaching and downwind. Although upwind performance is their weakest point, they are still very good. Speed is good but you may be missing a few degrees pointing comparing to more upwind-oriented designs. But as soon as you are slightly off wind, you are getting very fast. In offshore racing, like Sidney-Hobart, you don't have to push pointing anyway and 50 degrees twa does the work. Only downside of upwind sailing in a Class 40 is that they get pretty unconfortable.
