Not to argue with Frank Drake, but life on rogue planets would not be entirely in the dark. I spend a few weeks a year deep in the Arizona desert where I observe the summer galaxy, the Milky Way. The light of our galaxy, thought not as substantial as the Sun, gives off a good deal of light. Indeed, so much that it actually casts a detectable shadow. BTW this was a fantastic and extremely informative presentation....most surprising was the discovery of multi-celled life deep in the crust.

Although we can expect a technologically advanced civilization to use some means of communication other than radio waves (something we can't even imagine) it is a comforting thought that maybe this civilisation will deliberately transmit a signal using "primitive" radio waves that we can easily detect, as an encouragement to developing species such as ourselves.

We find life in a lot of hostile environments here on Earth, but why do we expect to find life in places like Europa, places that have always been hostile? Could it not be the case that the formation of life needs a calmer, more friendly environment? Lifeforms we find at black smokers or acid lakes are just descendants of life that formed somewhere else.

@AFGalawayz Lee Smolin is one of the top 5 Theoretical Physicists in the World today and he says - "Maybe not all the Universe is accessible by the Scientific Method." I agree with him on that. However, when I worked as an Engineer I trusted other people's lives to the Method all the time. We all trust our lives to what we see with our eyes which is called Objective Observation.(Step #1) . We do this all day, every day. It's as simple as looking both ways before crossing the street. In another case, I am almost absolutely sure that there will be gravity tomorrow, so I won't chain my car down. Will this second be followed by another? Not necessarily but it is safe to assume so. I don't use the word "believe" because it is, in common usage, ridiculous. I have discussed this a lot in Philosophy and when somebody asks me "What do you believe in?" I answer this way - "I think it is safe to assume that Life is the most valuable thing in the Universe." Hows that?

I disagree about the use of space solar power. What most people don't seem to know, is that the atmosphere is full of life. For families of organisms which propagate by spores (fungi, lichens, moss, ferns, many bacteria and protozoa) it is the primary route of spreading, also for many plants, insects and other small animals. Microorganisms were found basically all the way to space. The microwave beams or lasers necessary to transmit energy from space could effect a large volume of the atmosphere. Killing spores in large quantities could mean diminished ability of the biosphere to break down organic matter, to colonize open spaces (soil, rocks, volcanic islands) and slow down the growth of plants everywhere because of missing symbionts (fungi).

My point was probably not so good on second thought. You are right, we have no idea where life has originated. Maybe all it does take is just some heat and the right ingredients. I always have this picture in my mind with a calm sea, barren islands, bright sunlight and some green slime floating in waves. ;)

Yes, you are probably right. I have always thought that life would take the easy route and not the hardest. Probably under the misconception that evolution has the ability to choose. Of course extremophiles could have been the first ones to emerge, and later gave up some of their extreme abilities to focus more on photosynthesis for whatever beneficial reasons. But is life really more than chemistry? I believe its just one successful experiment after a billion failures.

Good point! but....... i've seen a documantary about extremofiles and they seem to have a tree of life signature that let's you see a descent from common ancestry and they seem to have originated at hot places, for the earliest extremofiles are those from hot places like volcano's and cracks in the earth maybe this happened during the period of heavy bombardment and that would mean that some other harsh planets could also harbour life , But actually i thought the sam as you about the subject

The Faith Theorem ~ by Reverend RV Hebrews 11:1 KJV; Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. Faith is like a Theorem. ~ Merriam-Webster defines Theorem as “a formula or statement that can be proved from other formulas or statements” Wikpedia says; ‘Formal theorems consist of formulas of a formal language and the transformation rules of a formal system. A formal theorem is always the last formula of a derivation in some formal system; each formula being the “logical consequence” of the formulas that came before it in the derivation. The initially accepted formulas in the derivation are called its axioms, and are the basis on which the theorem is derived. A set of theorems is called a theory. What makes formal theorems useful and of interest is that they can be interpreted as true propositions; their derivations may be interpreted as a proof of the truth of the resulting expression’ But you ask, “Why is this significant?” Theorems are substantial evidence in bridging the gaps of many Scientific Theories. Our Bible verse tells us that Faith is substantial evidence too! When I discuss Theism with an Atheist, they often do not respect Faith and give no credence to it. But when I suggest to them Faith has the exact same qualities that Theorem has, it takes them a while to chew on it before they will come to an uneasy agreement with me that Faith is like a Theorem. “Why do you call it an ‘uneasy agreement’?” The reason I say this is because I have previously gotten them to allow this premise; ‘none of us are all knowing’. Thus they concede they can’t Omnisciently rule out the existence of God. Because the Atheist and I agree on this point, we have our starting blocks for an honest debate. The Atheist then brings their evidence and builds on that with Theorems. As a Christian I bring my evidence and build on that with Faith. The gaps are bridged by ‘logical consequences of the formulas that came before it in derivation’. ~ I have a saying; “Some need little evidence in order to have great Faith, but some need great evidence in order to have little Faith.” One may look at Theism and see the gap as a creek which they can bound and cross; another may look at Theism and see the gap as so expansive they would need a Golden Gate Bridge. But if we all begin at the place where we admit we can’t know there is not a God, then perhaps axiomatic evidence for the existence of God could shorten the needed bridge significantly, by moving us up the shore to narrower straits. The head of the Mississippi River is at Lake Itasca and it can be crossed at less than 20 meters. Bridging the gap there is much easier than bridging the gap in St Louis… Since you do not have all knowledge, like Blaise Pascal, why not ask; “What if there is a God?” Christians hold that the Bible is evidence for God and this is supported by Theology; the ‘Queen of the Sciences’. The Bible tells us that there is no one who is good; have you ever stolen anything? If God Judges you, would you be innocent or guilty? God’s prison is Hell; but you don’t need to go there. Jesus Christ lived a life without Sin and died on the Cross to rise from the dead. If you put your Faith in him as your Lord and Savior; as God he will graciously forgive your Sins. You can wager with Pascal that since we do not ‘know’ there isn’t a God, as rational people we should live as if there were a God. Do you trust Theorems? Then we ask for the common courtesy; trust Jesus through Faith today! Read the Bible and find a Church which will provide you with their axioms… Hebrews 11:6 KJV; And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.

A very good question at 60 minutes. Their whole premise is flawed in the search for "technological" advanced life. Our own history shows that this type of civilization is an aberration which came about due to a number of unrepeatable phenomena - the struggle between Christendom and Islam, the discovery of the Americas, the renaissance, the enlightenment, the "age of exploration" and European imperialism, all of which have put us on the path to this unique "technological" society. Otherwise, as our own history shows, civilization does not lead to these things even in societies which are around for centuries. So how could we detect ancient Egyptian of Meso-American type advanced societies as in all likelihood they may be all that is out there.

I can assure you that if they were here (they likely are) we wouldn't have a chance to see them. There are more planck times in the time it takes a photon to cross between two base pairs in DNA than seconds since the big bang. The Planck lenght fits many times more into a neuron than a neuronfits into the entire visible universe. If they exist, they exist at the extremes of physics and technology. We have no chance. It would be doubtful to think that they haven't captured the universe in their industry.
@ungertron
@ungertron 10 жыл бұрын
You say they exist in forms that we can't measure or see, how do you know life exists on a sub - quantum level? They would have no need to hide from us in some kind of technological tiny dimension, if there is any such thing. ETs are probably so advanced, compared to us, that we would offer no threat to them. If they are curious about us, like we are curious about new life forms that we find, they are likely to contact us in ways that we understand.
@nehorlavazapalka
@nehorlavazapalka 10 жыл бұрын
from quantum level a single neuron fireing takes 10^40 planck times contrasted to 10^17 s since the big bang. The volume of single synaptic vesicle is bigger than a galaxy. They know us much better than we do.

If they are here, they are not talking to us, and they could. So either they are not allowed to, and wont talk to us. Or do not want to talk to us, and there's nothing we can do. So, if they are really here, until they do a step towards us, it is the same as if they are not here. Because they do not talk to us, and we cant contact them. In the end, it's like they are not here, even if they are, until they initiate contact. Advanced as they are to be, they just need to park one ship above each of the most massive populated areas on each country and be done with it. If you do believe they are here (sorry, I dont) then not talking to us is like not being here at all. Deal with it, and live a happy life until they do move, if they do exist.

excellent panel,,Frank Drake is awesome !!!! love hearing him explain things, what a mind........I will dare to mix the two taboo subjects and state my opinion, ... the very fact that mater, energy, dimensional space time and consciousness exists at all, means that their has to be a source, (God) and a design for a purpose. We may never be able to prove this with our abilities to perceive and understand in our present state, but it seems obvious to me that it has to be..everything we perceive did not spring out of nothingness..In my mind, it is virtually impossible that we are the only intelligent life that exists in our Galaxy ...SETI is worth the funding needed compared to all of the other meaningless themes that we spend money on....

Belief in life in the Universe is like faith. Simply because we do not KNOW it’s out there. Presently it’s only taken on faith alone. That sounds like religion to me. It’s funny because many religions folks won’t want to think that we aren’t alone. But I have faith we are not alone.

If you was to think of all the animals and creatures on earth and only one species is intelligent doesn't that tell you the odds for intelligent life in our galaxy is very minuscule! all the things that have to fall in to place, Id love to think there is intelligent life in our universe but am uncertain that that is the case. I 100% believe there is primitive life though as around 66 billion out of 300 billion (due to my rough calculations) are within the habitibtal zone.

This intellectual conversation about life in the Universe begs the question: Are we Alone(?). This is known by Ancients, and is being discussed by Experts, but with no absolute answer. What if a Lifeform does not exist based on water, but is the creation of stardust, and made of unnatural 'virtual' matter that transforms, and technologically complex. The answer is True & Real. An Alien species exist around us in our Space. Evidences exist. See KZbin video: CUFOx Transformation.

Can you take a step back from whatever beefs you have with people who don't believe in God and evaluate what you actually just wrote. It doesn't take a particularly large amount of familiarity with the science to realize that there being extraterrestrial life is more likely than the alternative. All the ingredients are out there, and the only reason to assume there wouldn't be is because of an anthropocentric assumption of being special. To take your (and her_ fish example, it's more like living next to one ocean and living off fish and thinking that an ocean on the other side of the world - that you've never seen - probably has fish too. Call that whatever you want, but it's not a belief in the sense you're trying to imply.
