Which country are you in? How much of a result is needed in the A/Ls to get selected to Med school? I am a Sri Lankan and we need an Z score of 2.5 to get selected. Which is about 2A passes and a B pass.

@@Photo_doctor Hi, I'm in Quebec (Canada) and we need an R Score of about 35, which is the equivalent of a Z score of 2, or 2 standard deviations from the average. On top of that, we have 2 interviewing phases, the first one eliminates about 75% of students, and the second one about 50% of students.

The best advice I learned from several different clinicians through the years I was in school - those letters behind your name mean nothing if you are not constantly working to fulfill their meaning. So every day you need to put your best foot forward, treat everyone (coworkers and patients) with respect, know your patient comes first even if you are supposed to be getting off shift (so even if you have to stay late you do whatever your patient needs), show appreciation for everyone you are learning from (doctors, nurses, technicians, specialists), and know you are only as good as your patient thinks you are. The last one is probably the hardest to learn. You can be an awesome doctor but your patient may not think so if you have failed to show them you care, if you look and sound like an idiot (you are incompetent and you don’t know what you are doing) or if you have a God complex ( you think you know everything already so you don’t need to consult, refer, or ask questions), if you lack compassion for your patient, or you don’t really listen to your patient (sometimes you have to REALLY listen to hear what your patient is saying). Everyday you step into your white coat you have to re-commit to your hippocratic oath. You no longer allowed to have a bad day. Your patients and coworkers have their own stresses, and don’t deserve to be burdened by yours. If you are having a bad day ask yourself what you need to do to act professionally. You may be able to leave, but more likely you need to adjust your own attitude so everyone can get through the day. Your attitude, good or bad, will be reflected back to you by the people you are around. Don’t be afraid to admit you don’t know something. But commit to the idea that you will get the correct answer for your patient and you will return to them with that answer. Remember tho-You will only get respect from that patient if you actually follow through with getting the answer to them. Half a$$ing it is not allowed. So good luck and cheers!

lmao is this why doctors burn out after 5 years, sounds like terrible advice
@ahoward38196 ай бұрын
@@Coconinga If you are doing what you are really passionate most of these things come quite easily. The doctors that thrive are the ones that these things come naturally. Of course no one can do all of these things all of the time. That isn’t human. If you have a death in your family your team at work will grieve with you, because you (hopefully) care for each other. But if you are starting shift with a dirty dr’s coat and a tear stained face, then you need to step back and ask yourself why. Not everyone is cut out to do human medicine. There is no shame in that. It takes all of us doing whatever it is we do that keeps the world going.
@abraarhuq92215 ай бұрын
@@ahoward3819 sure but at the end of the day you have to take care of yourself before others self-prioritization is important
@ahoward38195 ай бұрын
@@abraarhuq9221 Hopefully you learn to balance everything so you aren’t doing all of one thing and none of the other. Taking care of yourself is very important. No one else will do it for you, and you can not help others if you are not taking care of yourself. But really it isn’t hard to prioritize helping others too. If you can’t figure out the balance then you will be miserable. But if you can’t uphold the oath you took for your profession, then you shouldn’t have taken the oath in the first place.
@abraarhuq92215 ай бұрын
@@ahoward3819 no one said that I wouldn't uphold the oath, and obviously we want to help the patients. i'm just saying ur rhetoric shaped by your original comment has been used in the past to justify how medicine is a pure "passion" field that can justify its abuses to the residents and the shrinking autonomy it gives to physicians. of course each person has to take care of themselves but sometimes its good to ask how the physician is doing not just the patient. my two cents. 🤷♂

It’s freaking hard as the patient. To see doctors like yourself care so much is helpful. Shiley placed. That’s where I’ve got so far. Need 5-7 PLEX AND 2 retux. This is a teaching hospital on LI. It’s very awesome to hear your words honestly! I know these residents and fellows are new this month for the year… but to see you understand the gravity of your position is very assuring.
