That is exactly what they are doing; tanking up before they stop eating. Then when the rut winds down, they eat again, preparatory for the winter.

That is a large bull! How does he compare with others you have seen there?

He's up there with the bigger bulls in the area, but his right antler is definitely shrunken due to that damaged pedicle. Nice to know this guy made it through the winter.

Irregular antler growth, lack of strength at the base of the antler means it is more likely to break off during a fight. As it had 3 years ago. We think he was genetically deficient there but once he lost the entire antler to a fight that year, lt has gotten worse. (Also, must have broken bones in his face/head, and he's at the very least partially blind in his right eye. We suspect blind entirely there. Thanks as always for the question, Susan!

@@susanpaulson7445 It was a fight three years ago, he must have gotten locked because not only did he lose his entire right antler, but also his left brow tines. That must have been some fight. We saw him the day or two after that fight, got pictures of him. They are in a video here somewhere.
