This afternoon Samson undertook its first day of running in trials at the narrow gauge colliery railway - with builder Dave Young and Paul Jarman at the controls.
Samson is a narrow gauge locomotive based on the Stephen Lewin engine 'Samson', which was built in 1874 for the London Lead Company to use on the one mile tramway at Cornish Hush mine in Weardale.
Samson was used in Weardale for a quarter of a century, replacing horse traction but was scrapped around 1904.
Working alongside Paul Jarman, Assistant Director Transport & Industry, volunteer Dave Young started building the engine in January 2013 after he had drawn up plans from just a photograph and an engraving.

Asolutely terrible ride as they have no suspension. Brilliant piece of industrial archeology.

I've seen the book about Samson, and am very impressed, as I was with the 'Steam Elephant' also at Beamish. Well done all concerned - she's lovely. Better not give Dave Young a copy of the 'Chronicles of Bolton's Siding for Christmas' - he might get plenty more ideas from that!

I'm not sure if Stephen Lewin made traction engines as well as locos, but they definitely got influence from them, using a geared single cylinder system

Looks like a converted traction engine. I've seen old pictures of a homemade 4-2-0 built along the same lines from a Case traction engine by a logging company in the States.

Where in the steam line is the whistle attached? I always assumed it was waste steam at the exhaust but someone suggested it was a pilot relief valve or bleeder blow off valve Any one knows for sure?

what gauge is it? The track looks wider than 2ft. Also the engine looks like it could do with a wheel under the footplate.
@Mike121243
@Mike121243 6 жыл бұрын
May I ask, are the axles sprung? If it is not sprung, how does it allow for undulations in the track? I am building a traction engine that goes on rails in 2" scale. It will run on 7 1/4" gauge track. The traction engine is a Burrell agricultural, although the Norfolk firm never actually built anything like it, so it is basically a freelance model. I am trying to make it look convincing though, as if it is from a prototype from back in the day.
