The first drug to slow the destruction of the brain in Alzheimer's has been called a momentous breakthrough.
The research ends decades of failure and shows a new era of drugs to treat Alzheimer's - the most common form of dementia - is possible.
The drug, lecanemab, has a small effect in the early stages of the disease.

Having lost my Grandad (my Dad's Dad) to Alzheimer's I'd like to say a huge "Thank you" to all the researchers & participants of this trial. Without any of you, this wouldn't have been possible. It's likely that my Dad will also develop Alzheimer's (it seems to be genetic in the males in our family). It brings me comfort to know that my Dad is just young enough to possibly benefit from this if/when he starts to show signs. And I'm very grateful that many other families will be helped by this too.

Do you know how much the drug costs? It will deplete Medicare and Medicaid to nothing over two years time. It is in no way a cure. It remains to be seen if it does anything. How do you say it reduced progression when no one has any idea what the progression would have been over that same time period? Alzheimer's progression is different in every case. And please go back to what is Alzheimer's and how is it diagnosed. Slippery, very slippery. And these Amyloid plaques , well if they exist in any human brain, and no one has proven that yet, do they cause Alzheimer's or are they a result of Alzheimer's? Years ago, a simple finding that the brains of Alzheimer's patients had greater amounts of Aluminum in them, thus, Aluminum causes Alzheimer's. Every one threw out every piece of aluminum cookware or utensil, medicines with aluminum salts etc. Not long after they said, Oh, sorry, that's Alzheimer's causes the brain to retain more Aluminum, not Aluminum causes Alzheimer's.

Farmers obtain twice the incidence of ALL serious diseases compared to the rest of the people. Which of the pesticides is causing dementia and how much less serious disease would there be in the general public if pesticides were banned?
@kiabtoomlauj6249
@kiabtoomlauj6249 Жыл бұрын
Can't ban pesticides, mid way through our arms race against crop pests... but I do agree with you that farmers have more major health problems than the average person, due to their being the most heavily exposed to heavy industry's most potent animal and crop chemicals. Back to the first issue (and these two are two parallel problems): doing giant mono crops that help feed the entire world of 8B+ people is different from growing a few rows and columns of garden growing in the backyard. Pests are powerful and in large armies. Crops can be destroy, if you don't have powerful chemicals to help control them. That is NATURE. Yes, we modify nature a bit... or, more accurately, we make it mutate at a faster rate, through the use of strong molecular compounds; but again, you just can't stop an arms race that both sides (humans and pests) have been fighting for many generations now. No matter what we do, when we create so much FREE FOODS, there will be uninvited guests. But we don't have to worry about "using ever more deadly compounds," since we, HUMANS, wouldn't be able to outlast pests... so we push this arms race as far and fast as we could. And if we don't use chemicals strong enough to kill both us and pests, in wholesale scales... their mutation to become "super bugs" may not be realized, either... so there will always be an equilibrium, such as what we have no... even if, again, FARMERS, as the first line of thing that keeps the species alive, WILL have to suffer more than other members of society....

@@kiabtoomlauj6249 What if the pesticides are causing the need for more pesticides, when do you stop then? This is not Nature, these are dangerous chemicals that are spreading in the air, the water and in our food. i understand spraying some chemicals on crops that are infected, but that isnt what's happening. Not even in ecological farms. Farmers spray this canser on perfectly healthy food just in case. seems to me that farmers have forgotten how to farm.

This news is encouraging to me, not only on a personal level, having seen loved ones deteriorate with dementia but also from a clinical side as I am a 2nd year medical student. Although the drug is in its early days the evidence of it slowing down the initial stages of Alzheimer’s is promising. It was also heartening to hear side effects were small. This truly could be the miracle drug they are hoping it could be. For those affected by this disease this new drug could offer more time to spend with family, and with a sound mind. David’s story was inspiring, and I hope the drug can give him more life. It also gives me hope that in the future we can eradicate this awful disease. I agree with David’s words “that it’s a horrible nasty thing and if we can slow it down.” I can attest to this having seen loved ones suffer. As a future doctor, wishing to do the best I can for my patients in the spirit of beneficence, these advancements give me hope.

In Scandinavia we have socialized healthcare, but not socialized medical research, more than in any other country,apart from University research, which is backed by government funding, as it is in mist countries, to varying degrees, including the U.S The U.S does have more venture capital though, which is a factor. The drug’s price will be an annual $26,500 for someone who is of average weight and Medicare won't cover it. To get an Alzheimer's diagnosis, you have to have Ambeta and Tau present in the brain. Problem with this is that 57% of these Alzheimer's cases have TDP-43 prion present as well. You cant cure, slow down, treat or stop a prion disease, it's a death sentence. Another 13% of Alzheimer's cases are actually misdiagnosed cases of SCJD. SCJD is the worst of the prion diseases. So, the price tag for this false hope is 26k? GTFO! With that bullshit. Keep reading, I'm not done. This was written in 2003'. There's over 6 million cases now. "Now people are beginning to realize that because something looks like sporadic CJD they can't necessarily conclude that it's not linked to (mad cow disease)," said Laura Manuelidis, section chief of surgery in the neuropathology department at Yale University, who conducted a 1989 study that found 13 percent of Alzheimer's patients actually had CJD. Several studies, including the one by Manuelidis, have found autopsies reveal 3-percent-to-13-percent of patients diagnosed with Alzheimer's or dementia actually suffered from CJD. Those numbers might sound low, but there are 4-million Alzheimer's cases and hundreds of thousands of dementia cases in the United States. A small percentage of those cases could add up to 120,000 or more CJD victims going undetected and not included in official statistics."-
