That experimental two stroke is super! I like that brute force design. Have played with ideas of experimental two strokes myself, but in theory level only. I'm intetested in designs, patents and studies, based on recent and not so recent development of two strokes. Namely two stroke engine type is the most efficient internal combustion engine type this far. Large diesels work in ranges of over 50% thermal efficiency, and there are some recent patents and such. And then there are all small displacement race two strokes, and engines and designs like this brute force of yours. Your adventures are great to follow! There was very lively tradition in germany before ww2, when puch and dkw were winning small displacement motorcycle classes, and they had supercharged split single two strokes. There was guy whose name was Zoller; he was great two stroke specialist, guy who invented and engineered zoller vane supercharger, for example. They, Zoller et al, had supercharged two stroke in cars too, in voiture 1500cc class, and there were even larger displacement multicylinder engines, up to 16 cylinders. These all used that split cylinder design to minimize blow out mixture from exhaust port, which was achieved by various clever tricks in that split cylinder design and supercharging. Maybe you are familiar with these designs... Those were great engine endeavours, but unfortunately ww2 and later developments in racing (ie banning superchagers, untimely death of Zoller etc) kind of shut down the development of that branch of two strokes. There appeared different kinds from then on, but it would've been nice to see where that split design would have proceede, if not ww2 etc... Anyway, great to see that brute force alive again. It's great to watch your endeavours and inventions. Thanks for that content!

Alex, you probably know this, but I will remind you anyway. You have a positive displacement blower. Because of this you can easily calculate airflow at any rpm. Since all air passes through your blower you can then calculate the fuel flow you need. I don't know how much boost you are making but as a guide, for straight methanol you need A/F around 3.9 below 20 psi as a starting point, for higher boost start at around 3.5. You will be pretty close and able to tune from there. With Nitromethane up to around 25% you need to be LEANER than straight methanol for best power. After that you need to be RICHER. As the percentage grows you need much more fuel, it is not linear. Work in LBS of Air, LBS of Fuel as Nitro is much denser than methanol. Volume won't get you very far. Loving the journey and best wishes for the Bonneville exploration.

One thing I just thought about, and I don't remember seeing it, was a basline test of the dyno with an engine that makes a known range of power. You can then at least know if your dyno is high, low, or just unreliable.

@Mad4Tracks1
@Mad4Tracks1 6 ай бұрын
I highly suggest you calibrate the Dyno correctly from now on, since you switched to being more systematic with everything. I refer to the intro at 21 seconds Two ways to do this, 1) You hang the calibration weight (the brake rotor and stuff) perfectly horizontal on the axis of the bearing. This way it is easy to measure the length of the moment arm. Or 2) keep the bracket as is, but only measure the horizontal distance from weight to the bearing center. The moment arm must be horizontal because gravity only works vertical and thus perpendicular to the moment arm Maybe your are correctly doing this, but you have done some many alterations already that it may be good to check. It is just basic trigonometry. I hope I don't come across as rude but I have seen you doing this for so long now, I really enjoy watching you and I sincerely hope you'll be successful in this journey :)

Be careful but what’s coming out of blow off valve could possibly ignite. It’s air and fuel being sprayed almost in your face. Don’t want you to get hurt. Find a way to pipe it either outside or some where that if it would ignite will not burn you (most importantly) or your garage. Keep up the great work

You want to run a vacuum line to the top of the blow off valve from between the carb and blower. When you cut the throttle, the vacuum pulls the valve open. They work better with a blow through setup with a vacuum hose from after the carb to the top so that under throttle the possitive pressure helps hold the valve down then vacuum pulls it open when you shut the throttle. I run 40psi of boost on my daily driver and I blew the rubber diagram apart in my Turbosmart 50mm race port so the boost wasn't helping to hold the valve closed and I could only get to around 25psi just off the spring. tbh, I wouldn't even bother running a BOV because on a draw through carb setup I can't think of a good way to plumb it if you want to run high boost. Say you want to run 40psi, you are going to need a spring that will hold 40psi, then when you close the throttle, the carb is going to pull say 5psi so the blow off valve will open and vent down to 35psi then close. This is all because you can't run the boost to the top to help the spring stay closed because the boost doesn't stop when you cut throttle. Maybe someone knows a better way to plumb it? You could do it the way I have my blow off valve setup and that is electronically controlled with a solenoid valve. I run boost pressure to the top of the BOV then when the controller detects a sharp decrease in throttle it opens a valve venting the top of the BOV. All of this sounds overly complex for a roots blower though, I would just remove it entirely.

Rotax pretty much has the best designs for two strokes. Direct injection is paramount. The less rotating mass you have the quicker it'll be. Ported cylinder and crankcase. A tuned pipe is really important. A sliding pipe could give you better bottom and top end combined. Matching the air flow to the correct carb takes allot of science for a one off engine.

For you to reach your power goals, you’ll need to start recording the configurations of parts and for each change whether the change was positive, neutral or negative, together with the actual power number. At each point, neutral means that’s the maximum power at that configuration and different variables need to be considered to make more power. It will also allow you to go back to a base configuration that was successful, and if that configuration doesn’t give you the same result as previously recorded, it means something is broken/worn etc.. it will also allow your loyal audience to suggest specific changes as the too have a record of what the engine is made up of. Definitely time for the new dyno to get some consistency in the numbers, as without it, will be difficult to decide what the changes you make actually mean. Anyway, loving the progress!! .

I may be wrong, but I think your Dyno calibration will be off if the arm you hang the weight off of isn't perpendicular to gravity. I think the arm hanging down at an angle would cause the load cell to read lower than reality as it's split between a vertical and horizontal component. Love watching your work. Bonneville 2024!

They were tried very briefly in the dawn of dynamometers and were quickly replaced with eddy current and water brake. Disc brakes are not designed for long duration, high load. 5.8hp that’s it? Seen people running piston port 50cc bicycle engines hit higher.

How long did they take to dial it in, because with this specific setup he's running I've only seen this single dyno run out of this engine barely a baseline

Would not the lack of reflecting pressure from the expansion chamber mess with the pressure in the crank and the reeds?🤔

OK, I have an idea. Take one of your used chains and divide it into 4 link chunks. Then sell the chunks for $5 as a souvenir of your project to get to Bonneville. How much do you think the postage would cost? I would contribute.

You don't need lubricant on your dyno brake. You don't need to reduce friction, you need to remove heat from the disc faster. Can you put a makeshift water bath on the bottom half of the disc with a shroud to capture and duct water spray back into the bath?

I don’t know a lot about this but my understanding of 2 strokes is much of the performance results from the exhaust system back pressure. How can you dump without it?

you should plumb the "wastegate" back to the inlet of the supercharger for a few reasons. first it wont be wasting fuel, because its being put right back into the intake. second, no explosion hazard from the raw atomized fuel thats coming out. third, its how the OEMs do it on factory supercharged vehicles. just some food for thought.
@finnsk3

It would need to recirc between the carb and charger to not add additional fuel to the already mixed fuel which isn't really a good option. OEMs don't run draw through carb and blow off valves so the BOV vent doesn't have fuel in it. He really should just not run a blow off vavle, it's not needed for this application. It's not a street bike.

@@finnsk3 nothing will add fuel if it's routed around the supercharger. The airflow going back to the inlet will take the place of the airflow going through the carb. So the afr will still be fine. He does still need that to keep from over boosting. All superchargers will have some form of boost control. Some change pulley ratios so max boost happens at or near redline. What you are saying would be like running a turbo with no waste gate.

@@finnsk3 reread my first post before you come at me. I said the inlet of the supercharger, not carb. If you put it before the carb then yes it would add more fuel as it's going through the carb twice. It has to go between the carb and supercharger to prevent that.

@@68f100ranger that's exactly what I said though.. I said between the carb and charger. Positive displacement superchargers really don't need bypass valves, they didn't even exist until around the 90s because they need to be electronically controlled and opened based on throttle position. They exist to reduce heat buildup at part throttle which this engine isn't designed for cruising at part throttle. With out a solenoid valve there is no good way to control the valve when the TB/carb is before the supercharger. Think about a V8 from the 70s with a big positive displacement charger on top, with a carb or 2 on top of that. Where is the BOV in this situation? there isn't one.

8hp is still impressive for a 50cc. That would be equivalent to over 300hp on a 4 cyl. If you can get even more out of that little guy it would be pretty crazy.

You may want to try some dry graphite on your disk brake? No smoke, stays on, and loves the heat.
