When I was a bus and coach driver, we had 15 minutes on clocking on to sing on with your ticket module and get your bus ready for the road, i,e top up with water at the same time the engine was running to build up air pressure, you were told of if you didn't leave the garage on time. So there is no way one could do all this in 15 minutes so I cant see this being done each day.

Most defects get ignored by bus companies unless its either very easy to put right or downright illegal. You can have a dashboard like a christmas tree but if there are no red lights or brake warning lights you are deemed safe to go. Things like headlights and most exterior lights get replaced immediatly upon failure or if not later that day.

"Sufficient time will be allocated and this will be negociated locally with the trade union" We get about 5 minutes to do all this and if we leave the car park where the buses are stored (this is a good 6 minute walk from the depot) they will pull you into the office and bollock you.

All this is done just to keep the lawyers quiet. If something goes wrong and there's an accident, the driver can be fired for "endangering passenger safety", and the company can hope that they only have to pay a slightly smaller compensation bill because they "had a comprehensive safety program that the driver shamelessly ignored".

What an outrage ! These are engineering specifications and not a driver duty bound obligation surely ? Being a "driver" surely you drive and "not" be responsible for technical and engineering based legal technicalities ? Surely company's have technical expert have a look at the vehicle for road worthiness first and not leave this to the driver ?? I am very concerned and thinking twice about using the local bus service !!!!

The driver is ultimately responsible for their vehicle. It is potentially their licence at risk. None of this is rocket science.
@dantebingham60436 жыл бұрын
The driver is the person that should check because i'm sure the mechanics are busy Probably Fixing buses or refurbing them or what not therefore they can't do it. Also as it said they need to answer the questions (not exactly) Is it safe? Well on the inside trip hazards can happen at any moment it ,might only take someone to catch themselves on something sharp like a nail out of a seat and that's it it's a fault i rode on a E400 Arriva (in bus terms its a make and model) a seat wasn't on correctly and therefore fell off and it had just been repaired the day before and i almost Cracked my head open and that happened because of a loosened screw... Just goes to show that drivers need to be observant coz faults don't happen just in the depot... they happen everywhere

@@alandew7150 what a shame you couldn't think of something intelligent or new to say. Why should cyclist pay fifty pounds when cars coursing the same amount of pollution go free. I've been run off the road by a bus that was overtaking but didn't complete the overtake before pulling in, I've been knocked off my bike by motorists who just don't look, nearly killed so many times by poor drivers who haven't read the highway code since passing their test. But I go out in my son's Mercedes and it tells him there is something or someone in his blind spot but it's to much and to expensive to fit to a bus?
@gravemind65362 жыл бұрын
@@grahamreeve673 Blindspots are slowly being eliminated. In the new MMC buses the mirrors if adjusted properly reduce the blindspot to only being the nearside door. Some buses are being fitted with cameras instead of mirrors that will display on screens so these 100% eliminate blindspots its new technology though and plenty of old buses going to be around for some time. The MMC electric buses and Volvo Tri Axle double deckers in my area both have these camera/screen combo. As for the blind spot sensor in the mirror like you mentioned that will never happen with bus mirrors its a financial thing the mirrors will cost more and believe me plenty of nearside mirrors get destroyed on tree branches and bus shelters by drivers who are not being aware enough. The digital screen and camera combo will be the future of bus mirrors because they will last the life of the bus and not get sheared off by branches etc and they improve safety.
