First time I went to Manila I stayed in Eastwood City kind of modern township with skyscrapers. Second time I stayed in Makati, which was exactly how you described it. Third time I stayed in Forbes town/ Bonifacio Global City which is much more modern and also pedestrian friendly and walkable. Don't forget to visit the copy of Venice in Taguig, and MOA the Giant Mall of Asia..For first time visitors who just want to stay for one or two days in Manila I would recommend New Port City which is at the airport you can use the walkway bridge after you get your luggage to one of the many hotels or Airbnb's in New Port City, no taxi needed. But you need at least two weeks or more to experience all the places of Manila.

While you're in the Makati area, why not explore Bonifacio Global City ("BGC") a few miles away. It has a vibrant night life, an impressive array of international cuisines, lots of greenery, a world class hospital (St. Luke's), international schools and modern condos. BGC has become the go-to retirement spot for Filipino-Americans who, having spent a 30-year working life in America, can look forward to going back home.

And now that the city has opened up again, I am reminded of why I love living in Makati. Try walking from B.T3, up to Greenbelt mall. It can be fun to hangout there too. I've been in Makati several times working with call centers until Covid. I always stayed around the Greenbelt area and Makati Diamond Hotel. I suggest you try other big cities in Manila like BGC, Eastwood, etc. For a more cultural experience, you may try visiting museums, churches, parks, oldest chinatowns, etc . You can try visiting Manila-American Memorial Park, National Museum of the Philippines, Intramuros, Manila Cathedral, etc for cultural and historical sites. You may also want to try do a chartered yacht in Manila Bay with a gorgeous sunset and Manila skyline on the background. Stay safe and have fun guys.

Visit BGC, you won't be disappointed 😀 It's the newer more central downtown area for Metro Manila. Makati is a bit dated by comparison (Makati was big between the 80s-00s), but BGC is the most central area to access all of the other major districts like Ortigas, Makati and Mandaluyong. Full of millennials, local middle class and upper middle class families, and a few lucky expats. It's my observation that the newest areas of Metro Manila are strangely left out of guidebooks (one can only think they benefit from pushing tourists to the old uglier parts of the city), but hear it from all the locals and expats: BGC is the new central point for Metro Manila. It's very much part of the real Philippines. It's a side of the 21st century Philippines the world is justgoing to have to accept. Welcome! :)

The malls are better in Makati and easier access to numerous restaurants than BGC. I’ve been to BGC, it’s nice but small and gets boring and does not have a good feel even though ultra modern.

I think Makati has always been that modern, cosmopolitan side of Manila. I was there in 2004 and it was similar to what you described but of course now it's probably more amazing. Im actually surprised the accommodations are relatively cheap.

Great to hear you guys are having a great time! Lots to see in metro Manila. People tend to just pass by it and go to the islands. Try to visit Intramuros - it’s the walled city where the Spaniards headquarters were during their occupation for nearly 400 years. And nearby towns 1-2 hours away by car like tagaytay lots of nature to see and not far from the city.

That looked like a really nice area! In several other ex-pat videos, I'd seen, they may have had to initially land @ Manilla but couldn't wait to get out of the city. They said the traffic, noise, and pollution were very bad. I'm sure one can say that about most large cities if you are trying to get around by car. They also mentioned it can get very hot and humid there, and there is an area - I forget the name of it, about a 90-minute ride west/north of the city that is in the mountains and it is much cooler and less congested. Great video!

Pete, that sounds like Baguio. It's one of the most expensive places to live in the Philippines and crowded, a tourist spot for foreigners and a vacation spot for Filipinos. Much cooler summer weather. But it's a 3.5 hour drive north of Manila, so maybe you're thinking of somewhere else, like Angeles, which is 90 minutes north of Manila, but not that much cooler in the summer.

Dan, that’s my neighborhood in Manila. Lagazpi Street across from the Greenbelt mall. It’s a big mall, especially when you do the elevated walkover on the highway to a few other malls. There are about four movie theaters all told and hundreds of restaurants there. I wish I was there to take you up to the Elks Club which is xpat central, and some of the nicest Americans you could ever meet and find the best places to rent and eat. They are a tremendous resource of information. I am waiting till things get a bit more relaxed there before I return. Did you find that apartment on Airbnb, I would like to try that building out when I return. Enjoy Makati, I sure do. Patrick

Most foreigners skip Manila because of it’s bad reputation. If people watches videos of Manila by foreigners, it is mostly focusing on slum and poor areas. Poverty porn? Thank you for featuring Makati and hopefully other affluent areas of Philippines.

Correct. Foreigners who have worked there a long time some even 10 yrs seem to know where to go/not to. Lol. I grew up there in the 70’s and 80’s. Last time I was there was 2019, then pretty much every 6 years leading up to that time. Unless you’re a Filipino and grew up there, you really don’t know and the unknown scares the hec out of ppl. I’m in CA and I wouldn’t go to select places in SF or LA, NY and certainly not in the Midwest or the south as non white. Ps. To the OP - Guards in the mall is NOT a new thing in the Phils. Many foreigners may have experiencing this for the first time but its not new, certainly not in the last 20 yrs or so.

Manila is many worlds in one place. Visit the Ayala Museum in Makati, it is underrated but you'll get a glimpse of the Philippine literal golden age exhibit. We've stayed at the medieval Spanish colonial city of Intramuros and visited the San Agustin church and colonial homes. Across the river is the oldest Chinatown in the world. Across from that is the American style civic center where they have the national museum housed in an old American colonial building. Last time we were in Manila we went to gawk at Okada Manila and it lavish Las Vegas style scenery and the biggest water fountain show in the Philippines if not East Asia. The city is quite overwhelming with all the things you can end up doing.
