Lake Taupo is a Super volcano caldera. It is still active and we get earthquake swarms there quite regularly when lava moves through the tubes deep underground.

😅I’m a Kiwi who married an American girl. Brought her to New Zealand for a holiday. She completely flipped out when she found the Superloo in Taupo. The concept of public toilets with showers was a foreign concept to her. We were in a camper van with a tiny shower. By my body clock she spent at least a half hour in the superloo shower.

Hahaha love it brother I think there is definitely come very cool things here in new Zealand were wouldn't be seen else where! We are truly grateful for the great shower and toilet facilities outdoors over here in the nz. I hope your wife had an amazing time here in nz :)

You went skiing on the active volcano , but may not be aware that the lake is in one of the planet's largest supervolcanoes - and it is still active. The lakebed rises and falls as the magma chamber below it changes .

Exactly what l was thinking. When l was living overseas I’d have people ask me if I was afraid of the earthquakes and volcanoes back home, as they would never holiday in NZ as they were too scared. Bunch of pussies. In return I’d ask them about their high crime rates, and weren’t they scared of being shot or robbed while going about their daily business.

I love Taupo, been there many times. I will try to go to your hot pools, they look very new and fun. The plane is a DC3 and, by the look of the windows may have been operated by a company called SPANZ in the 1960s. They were used in ww2 to transport troops, drop paratroopers and tow gliders. They played a significant part in the Berlin airlift, following the war they were converted to commercial passenger airliners. Some are still flying. Lake Taupo is a volcano crater, or caldera? Apparently, not extinct! Enough of me trying to teach you stuff, happy new year!

@@GlenAndMado thank you. My first flight was in a DC3 operated by NAC from Wellington to Auckland in 1955. It was a very big deal for me and I loved it. Your videos have shown me New Zealand through different and younger eyes 👀 and have taught me things that I didn’t know about. I left NZ in 1988 for many reasons and although I have returned many times to visit family, time constraints have not always allowed me to travel extensively. However, one of the most important things you have taught me is that I still love New Zealand but my home is in Sydney.

No you don't get the 'Rotorua' smell in Taupo. That hot stream at the finish, before you went for a swim in the hot pools at Wairakei Terraces used to be a secret spot just for the locals until someone spilled the beans and the tourists found it. It has since been 'developed' by the council for the tourists.

Also, Lake Taupo itself (pronounced toe-po) is a large caldera volcano. Google it.

I did a Geography school trip to Taupo for a week, when I was 16. We were doing our fieldwork in groups of four and came across that same small free hot pool off the Waikato river. Being a boys school so no girls around, and not having any towels or swimming gear, we stripped off naked and took to this natural wonder of nature. Eventually some tourists came along and saw us because it's right next to the track. We just laughed and gave them a wave. They laughed and waved back. We were maori boys so they probably just thought we were local fauna. They sounded European and said "Good day for it" because it was quite a cold day. On our last night we went out for dinner at Cobb and Co, a NZ restaurant chain. We ended up getting invited to a party happening later that night by a local girl server I was chatting up. We had to wait for our teachers to retire to their cabins for the night before half of us took off to this party in Taupo. But we arrived with no alcohol because the shops had closed before we could get there. A lot earlier than we were used to in Auckland. The girl who's party it was who was another server from that restaurant told us to go if we had no alcohol so we left. The first server who I was chatting up felt terrible for us and told me to come back to her flat. Some of the boys tried to follow me, but I pulled the Kinicki from Grease on them and turned around and said "What do you think this is, a gang bang" ? "Beat it" About 4am or so I left her flat with instructions on how to get back to our cabins because we were leaving early the next morning. It was the middle of winter and cold and thick fog made it impossible to navigate. I ended up walking in a big block and ending up back at the same street sign. I felt like I was in the twilight zone. And I was running out of time. Eventually I found my way back, crawled in head first through a high tiny toilet window crashing on to the toilet inside. I tried knocking first but no one was waking up and I was scared to knock louder so as not to alert the teachers in the next cabin. That night with that extremely hospitable local lass and the impromptu skinny dip at those natural hot pools made this school trip to Taupo very special. Good memories.
