Hi Jason, Thanks for another great first impression. I'll be looking forward to seeing part 2. It's really a shame that Airfix doesn't have a new tool version of this ship available. Kits like the one you have are getting harder and harder to find. If there were a new updated version available. I would definitely buy one. Thanks for sharing. Have a great day. Jeff

I think I can remember building this kit around 1972. Very fond memories of building it and like you I had it on my cabinet for years until I moved out of my parent's house.

Another thing of note with the classic series from this era is there are no Airfix points on the box these came in at a much later date, probably early/ mid 80's

David R Lentz, Columbus, Ohio, USA (Sunday, 23 June, 2024). Round 8:00, you note your disappointment at the poor condition of a kit from a re-casting of Airfix’s old mold of the HMS Victory First Rate Ship-of-the-Line. I years past had a similar experience when at a local model shop I had found Heller’s 1:75th-scale (if memory serves) kits of the Santa Maria, Nina, and Pinta of the explorer Cristororu Columbu’s (the Venetian spelling of “Christopher Columbus”) expædition to the west to find a shorter route to the Indies. I paid round 20 USD each. I had several sets of polystyrene OO gauge (1:76th-scale) soldiers that I would modify to crew figures. The castings were soft, negating in places the wood grain texturing, or their correct shapes; some of the deck parts had corners that failed to have any polystyrene at all. Several pieces had fallen off the parts trees, and with no plastic bagging, others were missing. I returned it with an explanation for its shabby condition-and my disgust. My mother loved sea stories and the sailing ships of old; I have a rather less romantic view of them than she-ocean passage aboard such vessels generally was very expensive, terribly slow, cramped, swelteringly hot or bitterly cold (depending upon the season), often requiring months to travel what folk today can cross in a few hours; it could be physically and mentally arduous, at times even terrifyingly dangerous!-though I readily acknowledge their place all throughout history; the annals of time are replete with astonishing accounts chronicling grand discoveries, glorious battles, terrible tragedies, joyous reunions, and much more-the whole, variegated tapestry of the lives of untold thousands of people from all four corners of the map. I had hoped to build for her an ocean diorama dramatising the doughty trio, fully crewed with the figurines, as they set forth upon the high seas . . . . One year, I had surprised her on her birthday with Revell’s old 1:90th-scale kit of the Santa Maria, which genuinely delighted her.

It can be frustrating when the kits are not up to scratch. its a shame new tall ship models are not forthcoming, imagine how wonderful they would be with modern cad drawn detailing.

The Airfix Royal Sovereign version in that box style shows as 1973 on Scalemates... so I guess the Victory would have been around the same time
