Durham Cathedral is one of the most important buildings in Europe. Right at the transition from Romanesque to Gothic, with the earliest ribbed vault in England and some suggestion that Islamic architects from the middle east were influential in its design. Most importantly, one of the most tranquil indoor spaces you will ever experience, simply an amazing place.
@philanderson51382 жыл бұрын
agreed, being local we've been going there every few weeks for 30 years, and there is always something new to see or learn. recently went to a Christmas play of the Christmas carol and a library tour of manuscripts from Bedes era... but mainly for the architecture and quiet peace... tranquil is the word CM

The Venerable Bede is known as the Father of English History, he was one of the early chroniclers of our history. He served in the monasteries of Monkwearmouth and Jarrow. Monkwearmouth was built by Benedict Biscop in 674, Bede served here from the age of 7. St.Peter’s church which is still standing is all that survives of the monastery that was raided by Vikings. Jarrow was built a few years after Monkwearmouth. The Lindisfarne Gospels which is an illuminated manuscript Gospel book was written by the monks on Holy Island. It spent many years on show at Durham Cathedral but now resides at the British library in London. There has been many petitions to return it to Durham.

Thanks for bringing me fond memories of Durham market. I was last there in 1969, when I bought what I took to be a picture postcard in a lovely old frame for a few pence. When I got it back to the college where I was studying Art I dismantled the filthy frame, which looked as though it had spent decades in a small room with a coal fire, and discovered to my surprise and delight that the "postcard" turned out to be an exquisite small oil painting dated 1912 of a Northumbrian hill scene in winter. It still hangs in my home and reminds me of the many happy years spent in County Durham at that time!

Durham is my home city. I've travelled to 30+ countries over 20 years but came home to marry and start a family. I live a 10 minute drive from the market square and spend time in the corner cafe outside the Cathedral... Café Dral it's called. The best view in the county is from a cliff edge at Nose's Point in small town of Seaham, only a short drive from Durham city. There's a famous picnic patch there at height and right by the edge of the sea, though it is much nicer in spring/summer. If you happen to still be in the area, be sure to check out some of our many castles. I'd recommend the 13th century Langley Castle for high tea and a walk across the Roman ruins of Hadrian's Wall. Enjoy your stay in the north. I hope our people have been good to you.
