Several decades ago, a famous Japanese writer visited and traveled through Jeju Island. Upon returning home to Japan, he remarked, "It's as if I went to the place where I used to live my 'previous life (前生)' and now I have returned to my present life."

I'm enjoying the travel video. Jeju has low hills called "Oreum" ("Saebit Oreum" is the most famous. On Jeju Island, the Oreum tour is the best way to feel the nature of Jeju Island.) and forests over a thousand years old called "Bijarim." Try traveling there next time. And the highlight of the Jeju trip is climbing Mt. Halla. It takes 10 hours to get back and forth, but it's worth it.

(the best green teas in Korea are in Hadong, then Boseong, then Jeju. Hadong and Boseong green teas are hand picked and hand processed, Jeju -> mechanized processing) The interior roads in Jeju are really beautiful - especially those that pass through horse ranches...

anyone coming to jeju, i'd reccomend going to manjanggul, pyoseon folk village and sunrise peak on the eastern side, oedolgae and jeongbang waterfall in the south, the teddy bear museum, camellia hill, the ma park horse show, and hallim park on the western side, and in the north, the jeju five day market, rainbow road along the coast, and the beaches up there like iho, etc. most of the places here are for photo ops, but if you really REALLY want nature, I would say do an olle trail. olle 7 and 14-1 are really fun and nice. if you do 14-1, there is a chance to see wild horses and it ends at the green tea museum so you can get that done in one go haha. Oh and Udo is nice also! small mini island that you can rent a bike and go around. much less crowded beaches

This video gave me the lesson and reminded me again that I have to research a destination or city's history, culture, places-to-go and etc properly in advance on my own if my trip is not guided tour but self-driving tour, e.g, in order not to leave a review that this book is underwhelming, and not to say that it is my honest and overall opinion on this book judging a book by its cover. And, have to try to look at and enjoy differences, similarities and etc between mine and theirs as they are with positive perspective and reflect them, in order to expand my insights and my experience.

Renting a car in Jeju-do is outrageously expensive these days, even compared to last year. There are people who bring their cars to the island by a ship when they will stay there for at least a week. By the way, the empty can was too light for the experiment at the "mysterious road,", and you could have used a bottle filled with water. If you put the transmission of your car in neutral at the spot, the car apparently climbs the sloping road. Some people claim that this is merely an illusion.
@LisaAndJosh2 жыл бұрын
we can imagine! we were pretty surprised that we were even able to rent a car so last minute--we were able to get the car from Lotte for $60/day for 2 days only, but the hotel and many other places were quoting $100+/day. we definitely should've tried a water bottle--that would've been smarter :)

My wife and I are planning to visit Jeju Island this Spring. I’ve done a lot of research before watching this video. I wanted to see if there was anything I’ve missed. The truth is this video I’m afraid didn’t do Jeju any justice. The notion of trying to cover Jeju in two days is flawed from the beginning. In short, Josh and Lisa misrepresented the island in many ways with their backhanded comments and offish attitude in their surface level coverage of the island. There are a lot of other well researched and more honest videos out there that can give you an accurate representation of the island and set your expectations right.

The north side of the island near Jeju City/airport is incredibly underwhelming. The south, southeast, and east are less touristy and more beautiful. Seogwipo is the city to be at. The Dragonhead Trail (or YongMeori) is probably the most stunning trail by the ocean.

I preferred the north east and Udo island side. The south side for me was underwhelming and the beaches not as beautiful, particularly the famous beach of Jungmun. There are lots of nicer beaches away from the touristy areas , especially if you have a car

Well, you driving along on beaten tracks / roads. Getting up on an ex-vulcano within one hour, it's 1200 meters to the top! You have to take those narrow roads towards Mt. Halasan and look along there on both sides and you would have seen where hystoric homesteads join on to rainforest pockets. Old traditional villages, sculptures, vintage cars: Cars & pianos museum, art galleries in ex war bunkers, temples, caves and more: lava tubes at Hallim Park? We did not search videos on KZbin, but ask locals where the hidden gems are. In Jeju-si are running two hop-on, hop-off doubledecker tourist buses, get a endless ride ribbon. The conductors on those busses would have you smuddered with maps and info on where to go and what is there to see - we did just that! We had enough info to go places for the next ten days, starting at 8:00 am till 6:00 pm and they do night tours with those busses as well. Everything within Jeju-si alone and no hire car needed! Of course we also hired a car (take a Kia Ray or get a Casper as the seats can be folded down to get two beds for tall persons). our try to spot farmers on their properties, real activ farms and make direct contuct with the farmers, that was so rewarding, the locals are very awesome, friendly people.

it's very common for Western expats or tourists to be disappointed in Jeju. Because think about the whole continents in Europe and all around America and Australia with the vast nature and sightseeing. What they misunderstand is that the Korean peninsula is a very tiny place. For South Koreans the Jeju island is the most warm Southern place with the most nature features like the Volcanic rocks and beaches. It doesn't mean that it is a remarkably surprising place for foreign tourists. It wasn't meant to be for foreigners in the first place. Still, for Koreans, it's the most beautiful and soothing place where people from busy metropolitan areas could ever dream of living there. You could think of it more of as an alternative of Seoul, then you might understand the hype better.
@LisaAndJosh2 жыл бұрын
thanks for this very helpful context! Jeju feels so different than the rest of the mainland and we appreciated that. I think once we dropped our expectations of those comparing it to places we are familiar with and got to know Jeju, its history, and spent time in the nature places, we loved the island.
@SeoWoojin552 жыл бұрын
The mainland definitely isnt the smallest, as the Korean Peninsula is almost the same size as the British Isles, but Jeju, compared to the mainland, is really small. The charm of Jeju is how different it is to the mainland, geography and culture wise.

awesome vlog! Can you share more of your experience renting the car, the process/preparation you made prior to getting the car, cost per day, was it difficult driving in jeju, your overall rating etc. would love to know more! Thanks :)
@LisaAndJosh2 жыл бұрын
Yes, of course! we rented the car with Lotte. we have heard it is usually a lot easier to rent online, but we had to call to book a reservation since we did it pretty last minute (they do have some English speaking staff on certain days as well.) it was pretty reasonable, about $50-60/day, but have heard it can be a lot cheaper if reserved earlier. Took a taxi to the airport to pick it up, needed an international driver license, insurance, etc. overall it was a great experience, the driving on Jeju was pretty straightforward and laidback!
@speakupyt49002 жыл бұрын
When traveling around the world~ Jeju Island may not be like Hawaii where you came from, Jeju Island is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Coming to Korea's most popular tourist destination and arguing for a long-standing reputation for not living up to your expectations It's disrespectful to Korea and Korean people. Oh!~ one thing for sure Jeju isn't hawaii because Jeju doesn't have a 'Homeless Problem' like Hawaii lol --Oahu resident *Your Jeju vlog literally started with this remark -->>> ''Jeju is not hawaii'' "it's called the 'Hawaii of Korea' we know these ' kind of comparisons can usually be unhelpful.
@LisaAndJosh2 жыл бұрын
perhaps the message didn't come across too clearly, but we definitely weren't offended by the comparison. having come from Hawai'i, the nickname was the reason we actually wanted to visit Jeju! but now having visited, we almost feel like the comparison doesn't need to exist at all because Jeju is beautiful in its own right

Beautiful Island that Sewol Boat victims couldn't experience. :( What you talk about the road at 7:10 is actually real. I don't know if there but there is one next to my town in Poland. It's totally explainable. It's just an optical illusion. Trees leaning slightly above the ground make a person perceive the road as going uphill. In fact, it is descending. This is also confirmed by measurements carried out.

How much did it cost to get from Seoul to Jeju Island?

We actually took a ferry from Busan to Jeju, but there are many flights from Seoul you could check out :)

There are places called oreum(side or parasitic volcano) along the Halla Mt. and you can hike there and could truly feel the well reserved nature. I felt quite stunned as if I'm at another dimension when I hiked up. You may even find the small lakes in the middle of oreums. It's kind of hidden though. 😆😍 btw, It's very cute for you guys to try the special outfits.👍 Hope you guys had a great time in Jeju island.

Haha, you should study more about Jeju to enjoy its better side. I never go but only order from that green tea museum. If you want to enjoy the natural side of Jeju, there are hidden and less populated jems. The places you visited are for cliche first-timers, and I feel bad about that.

ah yeah, we went with the popular spots we could find, since we were short on time. what are your favorite hidden gems?

Come on, guys. We Americans are already stereotyped as being lazy and dumb. Do your own research before you go to new places. It’s not that hard seriously.

Whenever you are in Korea, you must visit the temples. They are amazing! Can't miss out on that. If you can eat lunch at the temple, do it. Temple food is very special as they usually grow everything in the mountains, but go to a Jogye Order temple as they are more traditional. Naksan Temple is one of the best (temple by the sea), as well as Bulguksa, Seokguram, and Tongdosa. You really experience the culture there. While you are there, don't forget to get the cold noodles! Myeongdong Kyoja in Seoul is the best, hands down - MUST GO noodles and dumplings! Jeju has a great temple too. Also the smaller islands off the island are nice to ride ATV's around. Korean seafood is good to eat there. The haenyeo ladies have the best seafood but it's expensive because it's fresh caught from the sea. Best sea cucumbers (if you can handle that) and abalone. I would Google popular seafood places on Jeju because the best are the Korean seafood dishes. Get some marinated blue crab anywhere near the water in Korea, it's amazing! Jeju Folk Village is nice too Jusangjeolli Cliff. I think they have swimming and kayaking there. Snorkeling is great too www.expatolife.com/things-to-do-in-jeju-island-south-korea/
