The first qibla was masjib al qibli which you called the 'actual masjid al aqsa.' the dome of the rock was the place they say that the prophet had started the miraj travel to heaven. The actual aqsa mosque is actually the whole square. From the momemt you enter through the port. There are five mosques but two or three of them are still being used for prayer. Another was turned into a small quran school. And another into a museum. The whole place is holy ground and called aqsa mosque. It's very calm and peaceful mashaAllah once you step foot on aqsa ground.
