Interesting fact is that when you were standing at Serdica center, you were at the middle of the "Square of tolerance" how we call it. It is formed by 4 religious temples - an orthodox church, a mosque, sinagogue and catholic church. Don't know where else you can find that mix of religious temples in just 500 metres diameter.

Al. Nevsky was built next to St. Sofia Cathedral which dates from the same period as St.Sophia in Istanbul, and gave the name Sofia to the city in the Middle Ages. It had other names before that. So the location is not accidental. It shows continuity with the much older Cathedral, which is still standing, withstanding many troubled times, inckudinf being used as a mosque.

Al. Nevsky Cathedral was the largest Orthodox Cathedral in the world until Serbia built St.Sava specifically to be bigger than the Sofia Cathedral. Otherwise historically the biggest Orthodox Cathderal is St. Sophia in Istanbul, which is now a mosque.

There are plenty of underpasses in Sofia where you are supposed to cross the street! It is too bad you did not use the one next to the Presidential building, as it contains some Roman ruins. Also next to the Presidency is the Archeological Museum, one of my fav buildings in Sofia..It is not huge, so it is manageable even for people not very interested in history...but you will grasp better the history of Bulgaria and the Balkans, if you visit.

"Daddy of them all"..O come on 😆 Serbia i much better..Bulgaria was under otomans much longer than Serbia and more importantly whole Bulgaria...And almost half of Serbia(lets say 40%) was under Austria..So in northern Serbia there are cities like Novi Sad,Subotica,Sombor,Vrsac,Zemun...Real central European cities...There's nothing like that in Bulgaria

@@dabbleandtravel Yes, that's right. But you've probably missed it in Serbia because in last 20-30 years it's popularity dropped, at least in Belgrade. When I moved to Belgrade 25 years ago mekike were everywhere, but now the number of places with mekike is significantly lower. I'm not happy with that, because I really love those. Also "banista" is I believe "banitsa" actually, and in it is just Bulgarian and East Serbian name for the meal in the rest of Serbia known as "gibanitsa". It is very old and traditional mean. Gibanica is rarely sold in pekaras, it is more often made at home.
