Next time when you order a cold beverage such as bubble tea, don’t tear off the top cover. Just stick the straw through the cover. That way you will also avoid spilling of the bubbles. 😃

This was our first time drinking this tea, so we had to fully inspect it before consuming 😂 We did it the right way on our next one 😊

@@dacedaine822 No worries. 😃 If you look around, many Taiwanese drink cold beverage when they are on the move. Its subtropical climate could reach 30+ degrees c in summer. This design, ie having a sealed wrapping, makes it easy to drink on the go and prevent spilling. This is one reason why the streets in Taipei are relatively clean. Speaking of cleanliness, have you noticed there are hardly any public trash bins in Taipei? We are used to take care of our own trash. Many would bring their own bags to store their trash and then bring back home. Alternatively, they simply don’t create trash when they’re out and about. Back in the days when there were more trash bins around, people would stuff garbage into them. When trash were not removed timely, guess what, they became smelly and dirty. So the government got rid of public trash bins and people gradually changed their habits.

Now that you say that, yes - I did notice there were no trash bins in the city, I’d always have to keep stuff until I get to the hotel, but never quite looked into as to why that is. I think it’s a great way of battling the issue! Taipei is a clean, beautiful city - happy to hear people are collectively doing what’s best for their city! We really loved all our adventures around Taipei and East Coast, but feel 10 days were NOT enough. We already look forward to returning!

Glad you are enjoying Taiwan. You are absolutely correct that the people are very friendly and helpful, and everything is quite efficient. The food is also fantasitc. The country has its unique culture with influences from mainland China as well as Japan (which occupied the island for 50+ years from the late 19th century until 1949). Mandarin is the official language, but the local dialect, Taiwanese, is the same as the one spoken on the southern coast of Fujian province in China (just across the straits), and also among the Fujianese diaspora in places like Malaysia, Singapore, and even pockets of the Philippines. It's also called Hokkien or Southern Min. Many Taiwanese speak a bit of English as it's a required subject in the schools, but it doesn't always stick with people. Taiwan is both more traditional and more modern than mainland China. Traditions and cultural practices that were stamped out by communism and the cultural revolution in China remain strong in Taiwan. And as an open society with lots of commerce and exchange with the West over past several decades, Taiwan is also quite modern in sensibilities.

I second everything you’ve said - it felt exactly like that: Taiwan is developed, modern and so ahead, and yet has managed to preserve its authenticity. I was so impressed with the people, I really thought they’d be more reserved, but everyone was so welcoming, kind and rushed to help us every time, we felt safe and welcome! So many people approached us randomly to have a chat and see how we were getting on, it’s truly amazing. The food has been delicious everywhere we’ve tried and the efficiency of everything was remarkable. Really felt strong connection to Taiwan and would like to return soon to explore the rest of the country 😊
