Some people in the comments have already pointed this out: Blackman happens to visit Perekryostok, a rather high-street supermarket catering to the middle class. There are other, economy-class grocery chains like Pyatyorochka or Magnit, where you can find some of the same items (and others, mainly locally-produced) at a considerably lower price. If you come for a longer term, once you settle in and find your way around the city, you'll find out it's actually more affordable than you'd think judging by the high-street stores

Fish (especially freshly caught) is so expensive in majority of central and southern regions, because the only actual feasible places of mass thralling (under quotas, even) are in far eastern (Vladivostok, Khabarovsk, etc) and northern-western (Karel republic, Murmansk, which are near North Pole) regions, with exists to Baltic sea (and oceans from there) and Okhotsk sea (Japanese/Korean oceanic region, the Pacific) respectively. The country is extremely big, so all of the pricing goes into shipping expenses, logistics and etc., because freshly caught sea products need to be delivered very fast to the inland regions, and even said "fast" usually means at least a couple days even by plane. That's why prices for seafood products in general are so high in Moscow, Saint Petersburg, and etc. This is also one of the prime and main reasons why absolute majority of seafood sold throughout the country in general, is being distributed in form of canned preserves, instead of whole sized sea fauna. We have special fishing ships which are literal massive swimming factories, where they catch different sea life, instantly gut and clean it right on the ship, and immediately can them down as preserves, right on spot, on the ship itself, after which the already-canned and already-labeled, fully-ready-to-be-eaten preserves are being shipped off the ship to the stores, once the ship docks at the port after the seasonal fishing bout. The closer you live to sea and the cities that are primarily dealing in with seafood production, the cheaper these products in those particular places usually would be, and the further you go "inside" the country, to it's center and further on, the more expensive it gets. It's only natural. And, even though we also have exits to Azov and Black seas (and thus to Bosporus strait and into Adriatic/Mediterranean from there), and the memetic Caspian "sea" (which is actually just a giant landlocked lake), those particular water basins don't have much fish or other sea products (aside from mussels and oysters) in them at all, so they're not feasible for mass thralling. In the past, roughly before 1970's, Black sea had a LOT of different kinds of fish and other seafood things in it, but absolute majority of it was depleted by early 90's, quotas weren't a thing back then, so fishing was uncontrollable and excessive (literally everyone-and-their-dog were doing it). Nowadays it's slowly recovering back up, due to a lot of restrictions imposed on the region, but it'll still take at least 35~40 years before local sea fauna and flora manages to fully get back to the state it was in before the 1980's~1990's. Hence why Russian Federation can only really rely on mass fishing in Baltic sea, Okhotsk sea and Pacific ocean under quotas, for now. River and lake fish are largely not good, very often having much parasites and other crap in it, so it's very rarely being mass fished (despite Russia in general having abundance of rivers, majority of which are very clean). We do catch a lot of crayfishes in our rivers, however. Boiled crayfishes are a national mass consumed snack served to beer and just by themselves, be that at homes, small cafes, restaurants, or other places. Black sea region's (like the Caucasus mountain range, for one) rivers are especially famous for those, because crayfishes there are big, have a lot of meat and it's very tasty. Crayfishes never live in dirty or muddy waters, so they're perfect indicators of water being very clean and nearly immediately drinkable.

@KawayolnyoАй бұрын
