Nova Scotian native here, a good way to reduce your food costs is to buy at grocery stores (Costco giving great deals) the markup at most eating establishments is making it increasingly difficult to travel efficiently across all the Atlantic provinces along with many other factors to include because of the inflating economy.

First time watching. You have a new subscriber. Welcome to Canada. Funny enough, I was just in Halifax helping my parents downsize. I live on the west coast of Canada now, but my parents lived in Boutilier's Point on St. Margaret's Bay for over 30 years. It is renowned for the legendary fog. My parents are originally from South Hampton. They are 89 now and have been together since they were 15. Moved to Canada in 56 after my dad had been stationed in Moose Jaw Saskatchewan with the RAF. I do hope you fall in love with our country as much as they did.

Welcome to Canada! You should visit the lighthouse at the Masstown Market, it's not actually on the water, but it's a full blown lighthouse. And they have the best fish 'n chips in Nova Scotia. From there, a great trip is along the coast to Advocate. There are several lighthouses along there too. Cape Sharp, and Cape D'Or come to mind. And it's a great windy road, like the Cabot Trail but fewer people. Have a great trip!

I just found your channel and after a brief overview and peak at my home, Nova Scotia, immediately subscribed. My wife and two girls, (13&16), have made it a part of each summer to explore a new part of Nova Scotia. It has so much coastline as you are likely learning. We really feel this MUST be one of the most beautiful parts of the Earth and there is still so much to sea! I feel the very shape of this piece of land as seen on a map or google Earth puts it even up there with Italy and the like. I'm happy and proud you both love it and hope you find it exceptionally clean and friendly. Not sure how long you are staying but if you have any questions or if we can help you while you are here, please let us know. We live in Dartmouth which was its own city across the bridges from Halifax until we all became a municipality a few years back. Love your dogs and digg your crib. By the way, Cape Breton Island is a whole different level of beauty and friendliness. The Cabot trail drive is simply beyond anything you will read about it or see in picture or video! Enjoy....look forward to following you. I follow several sailing channels but this is my first land one.

This is amazing! NS really is incredible, we've only seen the tiniest bit but agree with everything you say. The coastline is so intricate you could spend a lifetime exploring all the hidden coves and bays. And yes, it's SO clean! The people are incredibly friendly and it's just a joy to be here. The perfect place to start our big road trip 💛 We're making a figure-of-8 loop around the province and will of course be heading to Cape Breton, can't miss it! We also love sailing channels 😋 Who knows if a boat is on the cards one day... Sending love to you and your family, hope you enjoy the videos!

The Cabot Trail isvery scenic to travel. Looking for the small roads that go inland on the trail which are usually gravel get you to some nice lakes and one to a waterfall to park at. those are the roads that we tend to see moose on. The park covers a bigslice of the trail but there is a campground if you need to pay for whatever reason on the top road at the North ed

We live on the south shore, and I would recommend as a dog owner, you go to a vets and have your dogs put on the proper medicine for heartworm, which they can get from the mosquitoes, and and a yearly shot and monthly medicine for the ticks. The ticks are just as bad in Ontario too, so please consider it, as it will help keep you all safe!

So glad I found your channel. I am a retired community nurse and I had the Peggy’s Cove Loop route visiting my patients many years ago. It’s one of the most beautiful places and I enjoyed the people and living in that province. I still live in Atlantic Canada (Newfoundland) which has it’s own unique beauty and history that is tied to South West England, Ireland and France back in the 1600’s and 1700’s through the cod fishery, trading in the West Indies for Rum molasses and sugar. I have discovered that many of my father’s line came from Devon. Because of the really high temperatures we have been experiencing this summer, sunny and 27 with a feel like or heat index of 35, and the fact that no matter where you go in the Maritimes you are not too far from a beach or a body of water, you will experience “The Fog” 😊. It usually burns off during the day with the sunshine. I hope you get to experience many of the delicacies of the Maritimes. Seafood is king. The chowders, lobster rolls, deep fried clams and many restaurants bake their own bread and dinner rolls. Lunnenberg was a place a friend and I would go for the day and visit all the craft shops and wander the streets, Chester and Mahone Bay also were favourite haunts of mine. Long before the hit tv show on The History channel, Oak Island was a mystery to all of us. There was a run down Inn that over looked Oak Island and several times I would sit in the parking lot and wonder where that pirate treasure was located. So happy to learn that you are enjoying your visit to my area of Canada, the east coast. My siblings and I grew up in New Brunswick and I hop you will also enjoy that province just as much. Have safe travels and enjoy.

Sorry I'm so late replying to this! We really would have loved to come to Newfoundland, but realised we would be in a rush. So we decided to come back when we can give it the time it deserves. Do you know where in Devon your father's line is from? Ben is from Plymouth and my dad's family go back to both Ireland and Devon, as far back as the 1500s! We had the best time in the Maritimes... such an underrated but incredibly beautiful part of the world with so much to offer! The food, the landscape, and don't get us started on the people 💛 We miss it already and we've been gone less than a week! xx

If somehow you ever come back this way to Lunenburg county, please consider checking out the Lahave River Ferry. It is a "cable ferry" and only a few dollars to take your vehicle across. Then consider Crescent beach which is only 5 to 7 km from the western side of the river, but on the ocean. That beach you can drive your van out onto and park for the whole day right on the water, along with many other people going there daily. Another beach to check out on the Eastern Side of the river but on the ocean is Hirtles Beach. Big waves and surfing usually at Hirtles. Also, about 55 km west from Lunenburg is a place called White Point Beach Resort. You can camp there with your camper right on or near the ocean. There is a great indoor resort there with a fancy restaurant, a bar with a one man band usually playing, and the bar also serves finger foods...and fish and chips. The waves are big at White point as well. The resort bar and restaurant is right on the ocean. If you are out on the deck, the waves are crashing onto the rocks below you. You can rent surf boards there and all the gear you need. Kayaks etc. are also available.

Well done you! As both a Canadian traveler who now lives in NS thanks. You did a lovely job. I can recommend 2 things for your travels: 1st double check for tics after your hikes always! and as for the mosquito bites, I have a much better solution than your ice cloth for the itch. Take a spoon pour boiling water (or as hot as you can handle without burning your skin) on it and then use the back side of the spoon to rub on the sites. It causes an endorphic reaction and sends healing cells to the area and no itch.. truly works everytime. I learned that while living in Ecuador for 8 years. Enjoy your journey.

Welcome to Canada! I wanted to share some mosquito repellent tips. For me the most effective repellent is a good strong bug spray, you want to make sure it has deet in it. You can find good ones at Canadian Tire, Walmart, Home Depot or amazon of course. There are bug/tick repellents for your furry child you may want to look into. Thermacells may be of interest to you as well but if there is a breeze, which there often is on the east coast, they may not work. Those can be found at the retailers mentioned above. Safe Travels! Hello! Thanks so much for these recommendations. I did have a DEET bug spray, two in fact, that didn't work at all on those monsters. But since leaving St Margarets Bay I haven't been bitten! We are looking at getting a Thermacell though, think that would be a good back up. Thanks again for the tips, and hope you enjoy the videos. Welcome! 🥳

Hey! Just found this video and I’m loving it! I’m from Nova Scotia (Halifax) and am really enjoying your perspective as a tourist. What great footage! I giggled a bit at your experience with the foghorn. I love falling asleep to that sound, but I guess it doesn’t have the same lulling effect when you’re up close and personal 🤣. At some point during your travels around the province, you must listen to a sea shanty called “Farewell To Nova Scotia”.. it’s a classic! Welcome to our little corner of Canada 🇨🇦❤️! I’m so proud to call it home 🥰.

Listening to it now as I reply to this, it's awesome! I love folk music. One side of my family go back to Galway in Ireland for generations and somewhere along the bloodline, I got passed a love for Celtic folk music especially 🍀 Can imagine listening to this in a pub on a cold winters night with a storm raging 🌊 I also liked the sound of the fog horn! It's a haunting sound.. Ben was going a bit mad with it though 😆

@@OverlandingSophia Nova Scotia is very rich culturally and with that comes a lot of Celtic folk music! Once you begin to near Cape Breton, you’ll notice that Scottish heritage dominates. (Also noteworthy are Acadian and First Nations influences).

For a true Nova Scotia pub song “Barrett’s Privateers” by Stan Rogers is really the classic of all classics. He’s literally a folk music hero here! You can go to any pub, request this song, and they will happily play it for you! People can be easily encouraged to sing along. I dare you to try it 😂.

@@OverlandingSophia Thanks for the video. I met a doctor working in Newfoundland who was originally from Dublin, Ireland. He told me that the people of Newfoundland were more Irish than he was! If you get to that province you'll enjoy a great culture of folk music and a great sense of humour. One band that has a long history there is 'Buddy Wasisname And The Other Fellers'. Another songwriter there is Ron Hynes who wrote and sang "Sonny's Dream". You might enjoy their music. Another folk music/country music hero from eastern Canada is Stompin' Tom Connors who hitchhiked and worked all across Canada, writing his songs about the places he saw and people he met. He was a major musical influence on many musicians in Canada; song examples: "The Hockey Song", "Sudbury Saturday Night", "Bud The Spud" (a song about PEI). Gordon Lightfoot wrote "The Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald", a true story of a ship sinking in Lake Superior (although, I think my favourite song of his is "If You Could Read My Mind"). Any songs by Stan Rogers are great, especially "The Mary Ellen Carter" ( I heard an interview with a sailor who had his ship sink at sea and he kept thinking the lyrics to this song as he was treading water, waiting to be rescued). You may be too late in the summer to attend the many folk music festivals across the country but you may find some in Ontario. When you reach Alberta you need to listen to "Someday Soon" by Ian and Sylvia. And if you reach Vancouver, B.C. "Summer Wages" by Ian Tyson. Here is a link to an animation of "The Blackfly Song" by Wade Hemsworth kzbin.info/www/bejne/nGSbapt_rb90hcU and "The Logdrivers Waltz" kzbin.info/www/bejne/q6HWi41oqJirrJo The NFB (National Film Board Of Canada) is a national treasure and you will find historical and contemporary film of Canadians and Canadian stories and animated entertainment.

This just popped up on my home page and I live in Lunenburg (a Brit in Canada ) - I'm pretty sure I saw your van here and parked outside my house at the time. I recognized a van life van from the solar panels and saw you had moved spot and were chilling by the kid's playground. I didn't think any more of it at the time, other than it must be a great experience for ya - and then saw this! So cool that you're starting your journey here. Funny you should mention NS reminds you of Cornwall, that's how I describe it to folk back in the UK. I've found Canada such a friendly place - but look out for the potholes, lots of bad roads in this part of the country - watch your dogs in the long grass, the deer have ticks for Lymes Disease you don't want that and need to be on top of it asap if you get bit. Have a safe and great trip! oh for the mosquitoes I use a spray called 'Off!' which seems to help a bit.

Re the bugs:purchase original (green) Irish Spring soap (bar of bath soap) and rub on dry over your ankles and exposed areas, they hate the smell. Simply refresh occasionally or drop a couple drops water and smear on if too dry. Can shave it and carry in mesh as well around your neck. If outside use an egg carton or coffee tray (like Tim Hortens) and just light one corner so smouldering but not burning and have it close as another option.
