I started watching during the pandemic while i was pregnant and suffering through really bad HG. I couldn’t keep food down at all for 30 hours straight. Not even an ice cube. So you guys were my comfort show. I’d watch you every night before bed and it was the only way that i could sleep at all. You guys helped me cope during the hardest part of my life and honestly it was the only joy i was getting for a long period of time. My pregnancy was so hard but watching you guys try food helped me eat and sleep everyday.

The earliest most distinct memory is the video with Link straightening Rhett's hair and Rhett's impression of Manson. I laughed so hard and it still cracks me up. So during Covid I started watching and had a lot of history to catch up on, it's been a lot of fun. And Link gives me the ex boy band member that wasn't that popular then but grew up to be the hot one energy.

I have been watching gmm for going on 11 years, and get this... im only 18. so to say that you guys have been an important part of my life is almost an understatement. I have literally grown up with you two, and the crew, as these sorta role models for me. I don't even remember my life before gmm nor can I imagine my life without it. I have probably watched every single episode including the mores, and many of the ear biscuits. I gotta tell you, I remember just how much you guys are part of my daily routine everytime there is a break between seasons, I never know what to watch when there's not a new episode lol. Im pretty sure you all have influenced who i am greatly and i couldn't be happier about it, because truly as im getting older and becoming an adult im loving who i am. Im not perfect, and on the days where i need something to lift me up and get me going again, i know i can always turn to yall. Thank you, for being a daily dose of laughter, fun, learning, and growth, throughout these formative years of my life. Truly love yall and the crew for everything you do.

I don't know how to describe what it is, but you do/did indeed put off a very youth groupy vibe. Mind you, I think I was first introduced to you after you had already deconstructed (so had I) . But I remember saying to my husband, "I bet you a million bucks these guys either are or were devoted Christians and at some point involved in ministry." I think sometimes we don't give the environment of the brand of Christianity we grew up in enough credit for being a culture. It influences more than just our beliefs. It influences the way we even talk -- the inflections of our voice and just the whole vibe. I will say, I don't think it's something people who didn't grow up in that culture always notice. Like, my husband would never have had that thought. But having come from a very, very similar campus crusade brand of Christianity and involved in very much the same way you guys were, I clocked it right away.

The political conversation really solidifies the limitations I perceive with Rhett, and to a lesser extent, Link. In the end, their capacity to constellate structures of oppression just can't help but be hindered by their existences as relatively privileged white men - and I don't think this is like, some unsolvable or unavoidable issue, but it does hammer home that they exist in a completely parallel universe to the one the rest of us as indigenous people (particularly in the global south), where "can't we all still have a functional conversation?" is a sincere baseline in their heads, and "your vote has the same power that my vote has" is a sentence that can be said unironically. I completely understand why liberalism is so enticing to white people when I hear people like Rhett and Link express themselves like this. It must be so, so comforting to genuinely believe that what they're living through is just a democracy going through an inevitable rough patch, rather than a paperthin facade rapidly deteriorating to reveal the true nature of the beast named Empire. It's a little unnerving that there's no guarantee they'll develop beyond this, but I have hope!

My first impression upon meeting Link at MythiCon was that he was both egotistical but down to Earth. He was flaunting at the Mythical Brunch and seemed like a bit of the fame was going to his head, but also dialed it back and was chill when chatting and when I was giving him feedback. Up until the point he said, "You trying to get a job? Well too bad you're fired!" I do know he means well though so no harm or foul. And Rhett was just chill and understanding the whole time. Fun all around and definitely could see their passion and charm while also they were clearly tired from a long, long weekend (as it was at the very end of it all and they were leaving shortly thereafter). Fun times and glad to meet and chat with them however brief.

i get what Rhett is trying to say at like 42:00, but its also hard to try and put forth the effort of having meaningful conversations when you are aware of the studies that have shown that even after showing people direct evidence that contradicts their beliefs, they just cling to their beliefs even harder. Its known as belief perserverance and the backfire effect. i've witnessed this so many times in my own family, that i have given up trying to change their minds about everything. yes its sad, but im also not going to mentally exhaust myself trying to change the minds of stubborn people set in their ways. especially when the things they believe are actively harmful to and belittling to me or communities i care deeply about. more power to the people who try, i just can't anymore.

Well said. When much of the current political climate is inextricably linked to things like one's humanity, body autonomy, voting rights, etc. it's not quite as benign a conversation. I think these conversations might come easier for folks not directly impacted by such legislation and then might not realise that there is privilege in that.

I liked the convo in the later 3rd of the show. I'm definitely HARD on the left side, but I also come from a more conservative family and realize that sometimes people were just led to believe harmful things by people they trusted. Some people also haven't had the benefit of being exposed to other ideology or even just culture. While there are definitely some incredibly harmful things we should take a hard stance against, I think that there are other things we should take an "educate first" approach to and at least give people an opportunity to learn and grow. Unfortunately, because of this cycle of vilification and the other side feeling like they always have to be on the defense, people have just grown accustomed to the idea that they're being attacked for "no reason". Social media echo chambers only make this worse and it really feels difficult to even start to make progress and do anything about it. I appreciate y'all and thank you for attempting to inspire a non-toxic level of positivity and compassion.

This was a great conversation. I have been some things about people’s first impressions of me, that made me kinda change how I approached people. And I honestly didn’t like that. I felt fake and I felt like if I can’t be myself then I don’t want to even be in a relationship/friendship/partnership with this person. Being myself had gotten me way farther in my career, I’m my relationship and in my life then trying to appease a few to get them to like me.

I really don’t like it when they get into some of these political conversations sometimes because I find myself getting heated over their ambivalence. The best way I can explain it is this (not that anyone who’s stuck in their way is going to care), but the judgement that comes with “my identity is my ideology” is that for some of us, it HAS to be that way. Someone’s race, their gender, their sexuality IS a part of their identity. Why should someone have to have “genuine discourse” on why they deserve to exist or have rights? Like, does anyone understand why that could be patronizing? Like I love these guys to death, but God they really frustrate me with those kinds of conversations sometimes. And if we're gonna talk about quotes on centrism, heres one for size: "In the end, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends."
@Kimoesq Жыл бұрын
YES!!! Well said!
@sam_8493 Жыл бұрын
I think the "my identity is my ideology" was not the right phrasing bc ur correct in what u said. I think more "my personality is my ideology" is what becomes irritating. I've met people on both ends that have made me feel extremely uncomfortable because their personality was only their ideology. One friend made me feel badly for not feeling or advocating as strongly or loudly as her about all sorts of issues even tho we believe in the same things. We're both liberal, she's just more vocal overall. However, every other sentence she speaks is political and it gets in the way of the friendship. She'd bring politics into the conversation when i had a crush on someone who happened to be white. I find i can't vent to her about my problems because it becomes political even when the problems weren't political for me to begin with. She also makes me uncomfortable with my own identity at times and it's just so strange for me to comprehend because i didnt think someone with the same views as me could also simultaneously make me uncomfortable in that way.
@RaeDSJ8512 Жыл бұрын
@@sam_8493 Yes, I definitely agree with that. Some of us show our activism differently and that’s okay. No one should have to feel bad for what that looks like. And to add to that, I don’t wanna make it seem like the guys haven’t been active in issues their own unique way, because I know they have. The problem (problem is a strong word, but it’s the one I’ve got right now), I tend to have with most left-leaning people around their age is that they will say things like “why don’t you just have a discussion?” and the discussion in question is “do I deserve to have rights?” 💀 Like, no matter how you may feel on a subject, no matter which way you lean, if your argument boils down to “I don’t think you deserve to live or have rights,” why on EARTH would I want to sit down and have a conversation with you?? Not saying that that’s how THEY think, but the fact that they have these conversations like “oh we’re so divided, why can’t we all just talk to each other” and then act like they don’t know why..? That’s what frustrated me beyond reason, because I know they can be better than that.
@javyjotti8 Жыл бұрын
Very well said, and I agree! I had to stop and pause when Link was romanticizing the "challenges" of living in a "purple" area. I get where he's coming from, but it's a place of total ignorance as a straight white man. I mean, what challenges would he even face? He might have to exercise his morals? He might see a Trump flag out in the wild? None of his rights would be affected, threatened, or outright taken away, so to downplay what would essentially only be a difference in principles as a "challenge" when that's THE ONLY challenge he'd face just seemed so out of touch and tone deaf. In those same "purple" areas, there are so many people dealing with inequality and prejudice, and it's not just some anecdotal "when life gives you lemons" life experience for them to learn and ~grow from.

First time I saw Rett and Link was when I was walking through down town Asheville NC. A giant walked by me and suddenly my stomach like I was stabbed. Then my girlfriend, wife now, said. “Isn’t that rett and link?” It was.

29:50 about the youth pastor energy, if it helps, I am a non-religious midwesterner and I think you guys are dressed like two different kind of before/after school-care program supervisors: The A.M supervisor who is there every day (Link) and the P.M supervisor who only comes in on Tuesday and Thursday (Rhett)

The problem living in Florida is that I have to work and deal with people who are supporters of trump, DeSantis, etc. It's very difficult to have to play nice with people who are basically open bigots or racists.
