FIRST IN WORLD - First Flight of DHC-2 Beaver with RED Diesel Engine.
This was an epic day, to see it fly. A lot of hard work has gone into this project and the whole team is thrilled to see it in the air. Now for the test flights.

So it is a German engine that has been around for 10 years rated at 500 hp take off power and 460 in normal flight so that matches the original wasp junior engine very well apart from the weight difference.

I like all progress in aviation engines but diesels are heavy, 1.6lb/hp in this configuration. Turbines, which burn the same jetA, are 0.4lb/hp so a difference of 1.2lb/hp. This diesel has a lower fuel burn, .35lb/hp/hr compared to .55lb/hp/hr in a turbine so a difference of .2lb/hp/hr. This means a weight breakeven is a six hour flight which is longer than the aircraft's endurance, so it never gets reached. Maybe this has advantages over the round engine but I think a turbine is a more efficient choice.

@@fraserhenderson7839 One of the aircraft companies I represented was fond of the fact that performance meant many things, and that their aircraft were not the fastest available or had the highest useful load (the usual terms pilots and aircraft buyers are referring to when they use the word “performance”, like I think you are using it) they had low stall speeds, shorter field needs, and other desirable performance attributes because those were the ones they designed for. When aircraft designers use the term performance, it is vague or nebulous because there are so many performance parameters they may be talking about. Diesels started making inroads about 20 years ago for many reasons you can research yourself. While you don’t seem to know much about aircraft, you are making intelligent assumptions that are only false because the world of piston airplanes has been made stupid by the FAA. Piston aircraft engine tech thus runs about 30 years behind auto tech.
