I have been trying this in Godot 4.3 for a while now. The GitHub says that 4.3 compatibility has been fixed, yet it always crashes as soon as i hit the checkbox to enable the plugin. Is there a fix? Are there plans to keep this tours 101 up to date in the future?
@Gdquest2 ай бұрын
The 101 tour does not support Godot 4.3 currently. But I'll update it to this new version as soon as possible. Does Godot crash as in closes unexpectedly? Unfortunately, if so, it's an engine bug. It generally is never meant to crash even if GDScript code has errors. Though on some recent systems and CPU architectures there's less stability. Could you please tell me what your operating system is? Are you on MacOS with an ARM CPU (M1, M2, ...) or on Windows 11 perhaps? These systems are a bit more prone to Godot crashes.
@elijahhmarshall2 ай бұрын
@@Gdquest Wow quick response! After clicking the checkbox to enable the plugin Godot freezes momentarily then completely closes and sends me to desktop. I have an intel i5-11400f, 16gb ddr4 ram, Nvidia RTX 3060 and am running the most up to date version of Windows 11.
@elijahhmarshall2 ай бұрын
@@Gdquest Forgot to mention i also tested this on a laptop with an older i3 cpu also running windows 11. Same issue.
@Gdquest2 ай бұрын
Unfortunately, this might be a crash specific to Windows 11. I tried opening the 101 tour in Godot 4.3 and while we haven't updated the repository yet, it actually loads and starts fine here on Godot 4.3 on Linux. Do you know how to launch the Godot editor from the terminal? If so, could you please try and, when it crashes, copy and paste the entire terminal output? You could send it at support@gdquest.com or, if you have a GitHub account, paste it into an issue here: github.com/gdquest-demos/godot-tours-101-the-godot-editor/issues/new
@Gdquest2 ай бұрын
I investigated the issue today, and could confirm it's an engine bug in Godot 4.3 on Windows specifically. I'm working on a workaround.

You say scripts are text files, but there's also the option to embed them into the scene file. I guess it's still fair to call those text files for simplicity (they're just embedded into another file instead of existing on their own in the filesystem) but I was wondering... How do you decide between the two options? I understand separate files can be used across several scenes, they're required in some cases and they're probably better for VCS stuff. On the other hand, embedding scripts saves you from having to choose filenames, avoids littering the filesystem and keeps everything together. Is this all that goes into choosing one vs the other or am I missing something?
@vickylance11 ай бұрын
I never embed them even if it's simple one liner script or for UI. It's just way better to maintain via VCS if they are separate files
@BryceDixonDev11 ай бұрын
I only ever embed a script if: 1. It's guaranteed to be single-use; as soon as I find myself writing something remotely similar, I create a larger shared script with `@export var`s to determine specific functionality. 2. It's 1-2 functions (usually `_ready()` or `_pressed()` for a Button) which are no longer than 3 lines each. 3. It's highly unlikely I'll ever update the script. Usually these stars will align in situations where all I'm looking to do is "forward" a signal or method call (eg: there's a prefab scene with a Button I want to provide access to) or do an extremely specific data processing step that won't come up anywhere else (eg: remapping a UI Slider's value to a non-linear range)
@Gdquest11 ай бұрын
The reason people will not recommend using embedded scripts often is because, as their code is contained inside of the scene file, the script is not compiled and checked for errors unless the scene is fully loaded. So if you use a lot of them, you can end up with errors that you could get in the editor if you used a separate script file, but that only appear at run time instead. Just as Bryce, I would recommend using them sparingly, for small and fairly safe things. If they could somehow be parsed and checked for errors like any other script, without having to open scenes, I would use them a lot more as it's very common for one scene to have its own script. So it would make sense to have a single file for everything.

@Gdquest11 ай бұрын
The video is not an explanation in 10 minutes. It's a run-through of the interactive tour that you can download and follow at your own pace. The run-through is here for accessibility issues or for eventual system related bugs that could get someone stuck on a step. You're not meant to follow the video as a lesson. Watching someone click through an interface is not the same as interacting with it yourself. You don't retain and process the info the same way.
@ЙенФенФыр11 ай бұрын
@@Gdquest but... the video definitely not only introduces the interface, it tries to explain what a scene, nodes, script and signal are. Maybe at the presentation level, but still. Too much for an introductory lesson. I understood everything only because I opened the video to refresh my knowledge after a long break
