Horse Tales with Black Jack

8 сағат бұрын

I FINALLY rode Black Jack, and I want tell you all about it! Plus, I need new tack, so in this video, I'm taking you shopping with me. I'm not much of a clothing shopper, but get me in a tack store, and all bets are off.
Like my hat? I got it from @freespiritequestrian!

He doesn't need more leverage on his mouth in the form of a harsher bit and curb chains to try to cowboy him into doing what you want. He'll quickly come to dread it every time he sees you coming. He needs ground work to teach him to flex his neck and bend his body. Do that and enough of it, and you will have a willing partner, not a resentful machine, you can ride bitless and spurless. Watch Free Spirit Equestrian, and The Clever Cowgirl, and you'll see what I mean. Also get HIM measured for proper saddle fit. An ill fitting saddle is more often than not at least a contributor to the cause of bucking and unwillingness to canter, etc.

After buying my horse, my trainer suggested to buy a correction bit with curb chains . The second time I approached her with the head stall she pinned her ears and was very upset. After figuring out she was even afraid of my trainer I stopped lessons and dumped that bit. I am not a performance rider and my horse is not a performance horse although she is well trained. Meanwhile I am trail rider.. Also my horse enjoys it very much and we both were tired of arenas. I also do some "exercise" while riding the trails. We also do bitless on the trails which is the coolest thing. There is a word in the German language "bahnsauer" translates to "arena sour" ??? Greetings from Germany. 😊🇩🇪

First, I really enjoy your channel and understand you are doing what you feel is best for your horse. With that said shank bits can be a harsh bit. Myler bits have levels and as your horse improves you can move to less pressure levels. I ride bitless, but understand every horse has different needs.

Glad you had so much fun riding Black Jack. I think he is going to teach you a lot, and I am glad you are sticking with a trainer. Riding two hands with a leverage bit requires some skill, so having a trainer to guide you will help keep things on track. You do have some advantage in that the Myler bit has independent shanks. Helps the horse feel the direction without a lot of chin pressure. If it turns out that the snaffle is hitting the roof of his mouth, happens on horses with shallow mouths, the Myler ported barrel is a really nice mouthpiece. A lot of horses like it. They really will tell you when they like or don’t like the mouthpiece, so listen to him when you ride him in this new bit.

A good exercise is trot poles at walk and trot , which will help strength his back end and teach lift . And a good exercise for you too .

I'm from Tulsa and am proud to say I've been to Teskeys! It IS an iconic tack shop! I'm very glad you got a Myler bit as well. Top of the line, and fits horses with shallow palates, and provides tongue relief. So glad you had fun at the tack store! Happy riding!

Tack shops or sales are overwhelming. I have an amazing dog bone bit with a copper roller and a 5" shank. It used to be his favorite but now he likes a snaffle bit from Dutton.

I’m so thankful for his progress! He was about 14 when I purchased him. Since I don’t know his birthday, I think I’ll just use the day I bought him as his birthday. 🙂

That sounds like you had a great lesson. I have tried and bought 10 different bits. I finally found one that my hotse likes. One of his bits that he loved and used for 6 years is no longer acceptable to him. I use a western headstall but Englisj reins. I tried split reins but got confused with them. If I ride one handed, he will exploit my deficiency. I love saddle pads and halters. My husband goes with me to the tack store so I don't break the bank. He can control himself and only gets whst he needs for his horse. I like to buy what I think I want. He says my horse doesn't care what is fashionable.

It’s not unusual for a horse to want to buck a little when they go into a canter especially when their kept in a stall and not ridden everyday even my 26 year old horse does it glad you’re having fun with him

Love the shopping portion and so happy to hear how you guys are doing. I was laughing at the reins portion: I love the thicker/heavy reins. It’s easier for me to adjust one handed while riding. My trainer hates them and prefers skinnier ones weighted at the ends - I despise em lol.

So not a fan of a broken mouth piece with shanked side pieces - have your trainer/Instructor show you how they actually work. Myler is an excellent brand though!! The difference between a saddle bag or carrying a phone on you is that if you become separated from your horse on the trail - if your phone is on you, you can still call someone incase of emergency.

There is something called a “dead cat” weird name I know but it’s meant to go over the microphone holes. They even sell small sticker ones for the iPhone etc. it looks like a fuzzy bit of fur and it cuts out all wind noise. Even if ya don’t use a microphone you can get the sticker kind to go over a hole or get a cover for a mic. All the KZbinrs use them.

That’s one downside to boarding stables. You pay a lot but have no control over when the horse gets turned out. Being out in the day in a paddock with no shade has ruined my mare’s mane and her overall coat is unrecognizable compared to when I brought her to Florida last year
