This was the music of my later high school years. How blessed was I to have had the Beatles and the British invasion from the time I was about 10 and then have it all evolved into music like Crosby stills, and Nash! I do count myself as very blessed. Glad to see you enjoying it and you got it 100%. A 'suite' in music is different melodies or ideas strung into one song. I think one of my favorites by them is Southern Cross.

The first guy is Graham Nash. He was with the band the Hollies. His biggest hit was probably "Teach Your Children", a song with this band. The next guy is Stephen Stills. He was in a band called Buffalo Springfield. He wrote and sung this song. He had a pretty big solo hit with Love the One You're With. The last guy is David Crosby. He was in the band the Byrds and co-wrote, maybe their biggest hit. "Eight Miles High". My favorite song by the band is "Just a Song Before I Go".

They were all very accomplished before getting together. The Hollies had a string of big hits in the '60s, as did the Byrds and Buffalo Springfield. Stills is a phenomenal writer and guitarist; most of the great acoustic and electric guitar work you hear from this group is Stills, with a little Crosby and Young thrown in.
@debjorgoКүн бұрын
@@stuBdoc Now you got me wanting to name drop a few more songs. "For What It's Worth" by Buffalo Springfield. "Long Cool Woman in a Black Dress" by the Hollies. And "Ohio" with Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young. Yeah, we've added Neil Young to the mix. He was in Buffalo Springfield with Stills, used to play with Rick James (yep, "Super Freak" Rick James), and has a long string of recommendations of his own.

"Echo in the Canyon" is a great documentary about Laurel Canyon, CA where these guys along with great 60's artists (Jackson Browne, The Mamas & The Papas, etc) lived and hung out together. It is hosted by Jakob Dylan (son of Bob Dylan) and he "interviews" several of these guys about the parties, relationships, fights, etc. It came out in 2018. Hope you can sit and watch it sometime. Has a soundtrack too and at the end, Neil Young (also once with these guys; Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young) plays an epic guitar solo. It makes one kind of sad to see these great musicians in their youth and then in present time. Time flies, so enjoy every minute!

The guy in the middle is Stephen Stills who wrote this song. He was a great guitarist and played many other instruments too. His most famous song was "For What it's Worth" that he wrote with his first band called Buffalo Springfield a few years earlier than this. These 3 guys could sing and always had great harmonies. When touring, they brought in Neil Young because they needed another guitar player. This album and a follow up album called "Deja Vu" which including Neil Young, were two of the most influential rock albums of it time. This was released in 1969 or 1970, right in the middle of the classic rock era.

Brilliant stuff. Part of the fabric of my life. Funny story about the album cover. In order, that's Graham Nash, Stephen Stills and David Crosby. They took the picture outside a derelict house, with a ruined couch outside. A few days later they realised they were sitting in the wrong order, so they went back to take another pic, with Crosby, Stills and Nash sitting in the right order. But the house had gone. They'd demolished it!

They were called a " super group". All three were from very successful 60's bands, Crosby, from the Byrds, Stills from Buffalo Springfield, whose song " For What It's Worth" was a seminal protest song of the 60's, and Nash from the Hollies. There were a few other musicians then, who got together in different iterations with them, with others, like Neil Young, also a very successful musician. They all knew each other, lived in the same area, all stunningly talented. These were the sort of Laurel Canyon people- L.A.(I believe) bands, a whole other bunch of people like the Grateful Dead, and Jefferson Airplane were some of the San Francisco musicians who were doing the same thing, doing albums together in different combinations.

Nobody does 3 part harmony like CSN. Graham Nash is the one on the left in the jean jacket. I believe he sang the highest parts. He was originally in The Hollies. Stephen Stills is in the middle. He was previously in Buffalo Springfield, and David Crosby is on the right with the mustache. He was originally in The Byrds. My favorite songs by them are probably Woodstock, Love The One You're With, and Southern Cross, but they have a LOT of good songs.

Great reaction. You realized halfway through the song - it's not one piece, it's a group of several musical pieces put together. The musical term is a "suite", and the proper name of this piece is "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes". It was written by Stephen Stills, who was desperately in love at the time with the very beautiful folk singer Judy Collins (she rejected him though). The Spanish section is there because Stephen's dad was US military, and the family moved to several Spanish-speaking areas, including El Salvador. Apparently it's not very good Spanish, but that's OK because it's just song lyrics...

Correct the song is about a breakup between Steven Stills and Judy Collins (another famous 60s folk singer - good singer and did a good cover of the BEST female folk singer Sandy Denny's Song "Who Knows where the Time goes" - Sandy Denny never made it "big" over here in America in the 60's, though did so somewhat over in her country England - Sandy and the rock band "Love" are the best examples of top 10's of all time, who were distantly known of in their time - and are today utterly forgotten today. BTW the phot shows in order the reverse of the printed names - the photo shows Graham Nash (who was hitched with Jonny Mitchel at the time - and his song on their Album "So Far" called "Our House" is about him and his girlfriend Jonny.............BTW Neil Young was with them most of the time, and is with them in the above album mentioned, so most of us just calle them CSN&Y, those sometimes they were just CSN. If you like CSN&Y, recommend you check out another band of a near similar time - 5 years later - with the same sound and as good (IMO) - "America", unlike "Love" who are also incredible but never made it big, "America" made if HUGE - on the radio with top 10 hits (at least 10 hit singles) every 5 minutes. Listened to them and Supertramp hits as a 9 yr old kid in the mid 70's. PS I never heard of "Love" nor "Sandy Denny" (who was the lead singer in 3 rock groups in the 60s/70s - Strubs/Fairport Convertion/Fatheringay.................they never were played on the radio in the 70's - only learned of them via the internet and "Napster/Scour" file sharing progams of the 2000's - discover much music never know before from those "pirate" music programs........and now of course i use KZbin to discover new or old music i never knew of before (like the fab Australian Rock Band "Psychedelic Porn Crumpets" - only a month ago - bought 4 of their CDs last week). peace!

Oh now you've done it. This is some great stuff here. Most of the lead guitar work on this album, as far as I know, is Stephen Stills. I have loved him since "Love the One You're With", some of his early solo work. He's up there with the best of the guitarists. Of course, their voices together are magic. That is also Stephen doing the main vocals at the end, with Crosby and Nash backing. After listening a bit, you will be able to pick up which one is singing. Stephen has a great falsetto and a slight southern accent. Graham has an English accent, to me he is the easiest to pick out. David has a warm, clear, beautiful voice. On the album cover, Stephen Stills is middle, David Crosby is right, Graham Nash is left. They mentioned in an interview that the album cover names are not in the same order as they are sitting. A mistake that got through. The next album, "DeJaVu", has the addition of Neil Young, which adds some crunchy edge to Stephen's bluesy guitar. Stephen Stills and Neil Young were in the band Buffalo Springfield before C, S & N (and sometimes Y) was formed. Buffalo Springfield had some notable hits in the late 60's. One classic is, "For What it's Worth". The first two albums (C, S & N and DeJaVu) are must haves in any record collection.
