what an interesting place to start a Grateful Dead journey (in Dead Head speak "getting on the bus"), although there are certianly many others who started with "IN THE DARK" as well, "TOUCH OF GREY" was their first #1 hit coming about 22 years their career. The Dead, already known for their live performances, went from selling out Hockey Arenas to selling out Football Stadiums after the release of "IN THE DARK" (it helped that that year they coheadlined with Bob Dylan) and their new fans became known as "Touch Heads", many of them stayed on and got to truly know and enjoy the band, as I hope that you will as well.

@musicdunc American Beauty specifically has a depth sbdcdetail that the band can't quite pull off live. There's a reason most of New Riders... was featured on the album. Sugar Magnolua loses its bounce and becomes a straight ahead rocker live. Workingman's Dead is far more stripped down and translates much better live.

This is probably their most successful commercial album. And near the end of their career. Most of their earlier works would really surprise you. But their live concerts were so different from their studio work. They fed off the vibe of a live audience. The album Europe '72 is really good but does contain some of their signature jamming sessions that can put some people off. But another great review. Thanks. If you want more suggestions, I can point you in the right direction

@@CrystalMarieShannon That link I sent you before was from Europe 72. A song called Morning Dew which is a balad. The album itself is a triple vinyl album, so three disks. Another fantastic song combination from that album is China Cat Sunflower/I Know You Rider, which is actually 2 songs played together. This is much more rock but really showcases their musicianship. Her are the links to the you tube videos, which is basically just the album cover art with the audio file being played. love the superstition reference I've played both songs in shows and somehow missed that obvious 2-5 similarity They are known for their live shows where these songs could easily go 10 minutes - been to a couple dozen shows back in the early 80s as a teenager - as far as their studio recordings I would go to their American Beauty album to hear their roots and unique harmonies - Always enjoy your honesty and ear/knowledge of music - seeya on shakedown street

They were wonderful at working in the Mixolydian and Dorian sounds in their music which is why you hear elements of minor in songs that are predominantly major. Hope you react to some of the live stuff someday! The longer pieces aren't everyone's cup of tea but as a musician I think you will like seeing the way they communicate ideas to each other in the moment.

For a studio release “victim or the crime” is probably the most Halloweeny song they have. The spookiest stuff they have are in live improvisational jams, especially in songs like “the other one” or “dark star”, as well as “space” segments in concerts. The dead pretty much has every sort of vibe out there depending on what you’re looking for, but you’re often more likely to find it in live recordings than studio albums. Appreciate your analysis though, as it’s more musically literate than most reaction videos I’ve seen. I’d be interested in your reactions to some their more drawn out live improvisations

Had the good fortune to see the Grateful Dead about 50 times, from 1980-1995, and did see all four of the songs you reacted to live. They were all excellent, but different live, but still very recognizable. Many commenters are recommending the "American Beauty" and "Workingman's Dead" albums, and they are, by far, their most popular studio works, but there are many others to check out, like "From The Mars Hotel", "Wake Of The Flood" and "Go To Heaven". However, live is the ticket with these guys. As others have said "Europe '72" is excellent, and the albums "Live Dead" and one just called "Grateful Dead", originally called "Skullfuck" by the band, but the record company rejected that title, for obvious reasons, are worth your time. Enjoy and thanks.

Hi, Crystal! As others have mentioned, I too am not so familiar with "In The Dark." I guess I'm a casual Dead Head ("Seriously Wounded Head"?), but I WAS lucky enough to see them 7 or 8 times back in the day, including at the fabled Red Rocks amphitheater when I was in college at CU Boulder! "Ashes to Ashes" is , well, "dark" as well but amazing. "St. Stephen" is eternally cool, "Casey Jones" is very fun. I love Jerry Garcia's fluid, three-week long guitar solos in their live shows, which, despite their name, are/were the BEST part of the Dead!

Crystal! How are you? I guess you could say that I’m a Dead Head. This is a very good album, but I highly recommend checking out “American Beauty”. It’s a classic. You’ll love it. The Grateful Dead are similar to Phish in that they’re both mostly known for their live performances versus studio recordings. Both also have very devoted fanbases. Phish Heads and Dead Heads. So happy you enjoyed this! P.S. the new Beatles single “Now and Then” will be released next Friday. 🤗🤗🤗💋💋💋🙏🙏🙏

The Grateful Dead started out as a jug band till they heard The Beatles according to Wiki Weir and Garcia spent the night playing music together and then decided to form a band. The Beatles significantly influenced their musical direction. "The Beatles were why we turned from a jug band into a rock 'n' roll band," said Bob Weir. "What we saw them doing was impossibly attractive. I couldn't think of anything else more worth doing.

Crystal, you cannot be a deadhead until you listen to and hear/appreciate the subtle differences between live versions of the same song from different shows/eras. From your reaction to these four studio versions, i don't think it will take too much time to "get on the bus." Even a bad dead show is better than a good day at work.....so they say. You'll always get a treat somewhere in there.

I'm sorry for you that you started with their 1987 album. It was their 12th and the first after a 6 year break. You would do much better to go back to 1970 and listen to "American Beauty". Even the Grateful Dead's music was spoiled by the polish and glam of the 80s. Hell in a Bucket is a great song, however, so it isn't bad that you got to hear that. There are some other live versions of it that are pretty awesome.
