exactly true. But even if people were to have a "restricted list" of "Things Men Can Cry To" this song would absolutely make the cut. This is one of those songs you could see a giant arena full of cigarette lighters lit up for.

agree. humans have emotions and emotionally mature men express them. too often men only express anger, and “under” the anger is fear or sadness which is stuffed.

I'm 75 years old, Dan, and I'm really impressed with your ability to think so deeply about life. And in my opinion, you really understand life more than most because you analyze life where most people just keep moving through it only dealing with it as it comes without thinking about how to make their lives better.

Harry's wife, Sandy, wrote these lyrics. Harry wrote the music. It is a work of fiction BUT she wrote this as a cautionary tale that he shouldn't let music success and his advocacy for the hungry rise above the relationship with his kids. He had at least 4 and was a good father. As far as you crying; big boys don't cry but real men do! Thanks for posting

I was 11 when this came out and I got it. I never saw any kind of malice or resentment by the son towards the father. Just the opposite. I always felt the son admired the father, looked up to him and aspired to be him. He saw the life his father provided him and wanted that for himself as an adult. As we see the tables have turned. Now that the father has time to spend with the son, it is the son who is busy. I don't think the son, as an adult, looks back at his father's absenteeism and throws it in his face to get back at him. I think a lot of teenagers would rather spend time with their friends than with their fathers. That's why, when I see a little kid wanting to help his parents cut the grass or with the grocery shopping I kid them and tell them to enjoy it while you have it because when they're older that moment won't be there. Watch a 3 year old wanting to take out the trash and a 10 year old whine about it! LOL Great song. It's the circle of life in many respects.

The way I see it, it is the father that is disappointed in the way things came out. As you say, the child admires his father for everything he did. It is the father who sees how much he gave up...

@@ChrisB-xm3mg and yet, I do think the father is still enormously proud that his son is so much like him, even if he also wishes they could have had more time together.
@usfanlovesjiwoo1978

Right, he wasn't a bad father - not at all. The son obviously loved his dad and looked up to him. But, the lost time together will never be made up and since he grew up to be just like his dad, his own children will grow up not having that quality time with their dad either. IMO we need to make family a priority with our time. Work is important but take that much needed time to spend it with the people we love. Life is just too short.

What, were you crying? Didn't notice, as I had something in my eye at the time. But of dust, or...yeah, something...hahahaha. I still remember the first time I heard this song, I was about 7 or 8 and the station my Mum listened to sometimes did a 'whatever happened to...' feature - usually of a pre-Beatles act I had no interest in, but they gave Harry's life (and death) story in about a minute and something about it drew me in, then they played this and I was stunned and was desperate to hear it again, but didn't until about 4 years later I picked up a copy of his Greatest Stories Live album at my school fair, and swiftly became the superfan I remain to this day. Not long after that Ugly Kid Joe's cover came out and I was so ANGRY at how awful it was - and more so that all my friends liked it and none of them had ever heard of Harry - no justice! Oh, that radio announcer called him CHAP-in so I mispronounced his name for years as a result; I've also heard people insert an L to make it ChapLin.

Things were very different then. Our fathers didn't receive affection from their fathers, many of them didn't know how to give it to their children. My dad didn't come right out and say "I love you" to me until I was in my mid-30s. Yet, I always knew I was loved. Back then, a dad showed his love by providing them with security. My dad and I had this discussion on his death bed, when he told me that he wished he had been a better father. I reassured him that he had been a great father. He's been gone over 20 years, and I still cry when I think of that conversation. Most of us do the best we can, with what we have.

This song really had an impact on me from my childhood when it came out, and later when my kids were little in the early 90s. Unfortunately Harry Chaplin died too young. But my kids had a tape of children's music by Harry's brother Tom Chapin. I took my kids to see Tom Chapin do kids' music one Fathers Day, and he did this song. And it was scary how much he sounded like Harry. This song means so much because I feel like I have my kids my all, and still I feel like I deprived them of so much of myself.

One thing with this song, it’s in my generation of songwriting and techniques of conveying, emotion and thoughts, but at the same time, it brings out the importance of family and what we miss out when we’re just too busy to take the time to be with the people that we love and before you know it time slips away, and when we actually have the time it be too late because like you said, it gets flipped, and they’re the ones that are too busy with life 🤠

Daniel, I understand this song so well. You see when I was born I had heart problems and I had surgery on my heart. And when I wasn't the perfect child my father left. Your extended comments and reactions, emotionally and intellectually, made this song come alive in a more real and moving way than ever for me, taking into consideration the many times I’ve listened to this song. Your interpretation is so wise and mature. I really hope the father will be forgiven by the son, and I think eventually he will. But it will take time. The son has learned many important life lessons from the absent father, and his children wiIl be the beneficiaries of that hard-earned wisdom.

Sorry you did so many sad ones -but it is wonderful that you cry. Don't ever lose that. I think this song had a huge impact because I know multiple people who recognized themselves as the son and broke that cycle.when they had kids of their own. I'd like to think there were some fathers who did the same, on the spot. I hope there were.

The song is about the dangerous tension between our best intentions and the speedy passage of time - and the tragic consequences of not putting "first things first." The father doesn't intend to neglect his son - he just lets the busyness of life get in the way. He fully intends to put in the time to form a relationship with his son - sometime - it just doesn't happen because he failed to make it a priority. It is a beautiful, tragic reminder of the great principle: Never sacrifice the important for the urgent.

I'm 67 y/o & totally lived off these songs that you've been listening & reacting to. You are doing a great job! I think you're my favorite of all the vids I've seen by others who do the same thing. You are tough, but sensitive to not only the vibrato, crescendo, falsetto, & the mood of the music, but to every word of the lyrics. I too listen to both. Of course, since I lived through these eras from 1950s to the Present, I know details about the artists, the intended meanings, the lyricists, whether it was done by the original band or by a studio band, etc. I've got autographs from Gordon Lightfoot, Elvis Presley, Ricky Nelson, Eric Clapton, & Mary Chapin Carpenter. Mickey Gilley (1st cousin to Jerry Lee Lewis) played my piano when he came to visit his girlfriend who was a friend of mine at the time, & who was a personal friend of some friends of the band, ELO (Electric Light Orchestra). My 91 y/o mother still has that piano. Good times back then!! Anyway, so glad to have found you!! I'm subscribing now to your channel. Oh, & as a fyi, I hope you don't mind an old lady saying that I love the myriad of expressions that come across your face, including the "almost" tears, & the fact that you're easy on the eyes doesn't hurt, either, lol.

Only time I ever saw my father cry was when he was listening to this song when I was a little kid....he tried to hide it ..but my sister and I never forgot it . He was human after all.I could see by your face that you knew where it was going even before your pause.Truth is eternal , and lessons are hard. Harry learned a hard life's lesson. Beautiful reaction Kiddo ! I think my favorite , poignant line in a film is in The Robin Willians classic "Hook" when his wife was reprimanding him for letting his work become more important than his children . She said : " You only have this one chance , and your missing it ".

I first heard this song as a late teen, by then it was already a classic. But I remember it made me think. When I was growing up my family didn't have a lot of money. We had food, clothes and place to live but growing up in the 80's and 90's materialism was "in". It was then that I realized my parents were always there for me and I had new respect for them. Now I have 3 teens of my own that I always try to make time for and I'm still close to my dad(my mom passed away several years ago). My oldest is 18 and she has become one of my best friends.

The story is that Harry's wife wrote this. Harry picked it up a couple of years later and brought it to life. There is a great biopic about his life and his family. This was New York , NYC and Long Island. As a fellow New Yorker we are taught that we were just one of 17 to 18 million. But we had to work and work hard. Family were not second but part of the whole experience.

Daniel, I haven't read most of the comments, but the lyrics are from Harry's wife Sandy. It was a poem she posted on the fridge. If you listen to Harry's "I Miss America" from his live album (1980?) he dedicates the song to a few people (one per verse). The final verse is to his son Josh "The Cat's In the Cradle" kid who is "ready to dream again". It's a nice way to round out the whole thing.

Other songs along this vein are "Father and Son" by Cat Stevens, "The Living Years" from Mike and the Mechanics (Mike Rutherford of Genesis) "Younger Generation" from the Lovin Spoonful and "My Father" from Joni Mitchell. I don't know what kind of relationship you have with your dad (great I hope!) but after listening to ANY of these songs you will hug him within an inch of his life. Listen to them sooner rather than later for best result. These always hit me because my dad dropped me off at school when I was 11 and was gone (at 46 years old) before I came home that day. How much I wish I could have a little more time with him. Loved your tangent, Daniel. I see you growing day to day. Try "Mr. Tanner".

Truth be told, this is a symptom of life. Children grow into adults, and form their own lives, and that is why parents exist, to help that process. Someday, every bird leaves the nest.

Damn, I'm getting addicted to these song reaction videos on KZbin! For so long I've felt so bad that Gen Z (my niece & nephew's generation) couldn't enjoy the simpler easier and kinder world that us Gen-Xers (and older) grew up in during the 20th Century when we didn't have to worry about every possible danger or word we said -- and of course the excellent music we were constan tly blessed with! Thank God for KZbin however and that Gen-Z's have the sense and sensitivity to listen and learn about the past, especially the 20th Century. I wish you could all go back in time at least to observe what life was like every once in a while. I don't care if I'm older now if I at least got to live in those times. Because even though times have changed, the human heart and mind still needs a sense of community and compassion that is easy to be lost in this digital age and these complicated times.

Every time I hear this song it makes me cry even for a grown man. My son and I are estranged at this point and and you would think that this song was written for me...... as well as other father and son relationships out there.

I don't think he was sarcastic...I think he just followed the model he saw. I think he loved his dad, or the thought of his dad sadly, from afar.

My take on this song that I grew up with thanks to my older brother and his passion for music, the bottom line if this story is that we have to take time to be with family and that’s most important. Now, I could take this into a wholly spiritual and even down what some may view as conspiracy, but I believe that the current form of our understanding of what humanity should be compared to what it actually is and why it is the way it is. I believe there are forces on this earth that do not have humanities best interest in mind, our natural state of being, I don’t believe for one minute that humanity was at all meant to be this way we are and that there are forces that drive a wedge into our why of natural life, why this happens is as varied as there are humans on the planet. I think deeper yes, because I understood long ago the nothing is as it appears on the surface. Humans have been taught or even brainwashed into believing that everything on the surface is all there is and this is all we need to know to understand things, however, what many people fail to realize is that there are many multiple layers and levels to literally everything and once we dig deeper into things, with more information gathered we get even deeper levels of understanding. One of my favorite quotes: “It is only by going down into the abyss that we can recover the secrets of life, where you stumble, there lies your treasure, the very cave you were afraid to enter turns out to be the source of what you were looking for” ~ Joseph Campbell What if these entities who do not have humanities best interest in mind developed a way to keep humanity down, to lessen their ability to transform or to ascend and become the greatest they could ever be, what if they put money, jobs, careers, education, and all these little trinkets in our way so that we cannot progress as free-thinking, free-spirited free-flowing humans, what kind of damage would this cause in the overall human experience? While in a limited Surface level thinking kind of way, this may sound odd to you, but what if you too were able to dive into the deeper levels and discover that such controls exist and have been put into place, what would you think if you discovered this is all true? Anyway, I could go on and on and on within this subject because I view the world as that everything is connected to everything else, this makes exploring the actual truth very challenging indeed and it certainly keeps the mind busy because there is literally no end to the STORY, the story you may find never actually starts and it never actually ends and it’s not for the faint of heart, it requires a lot of self-realization and its challenging to the surface level mind, but we can get past it, get rid of the blocks and filters of the lens we see things through and take them all away at any time, the choice to know will be yours to make. Anyway, this song says a lot in this realm because we have been taught to focus on in this life is not natural to humanity, and while money, education, jobs and all that are very important, I think whats more important is how we decide to obtain these basic things, where do they come from and whos agenda are they actually fulfilling. I apologies for my long comments, but this stuff is important, I may be crazy sure, but I am also human, I have deep thoughts about most everything because I understand that everything is connected and I have some concerns, I have feelings, desires, dreams, drama. There is nothing new under the sun other than the history we do not yet know. If what we think we know is a drop, then what we do not know becomes an Ocean. A closed mind is far more dangerous than a closed parachute at 20,000ft so remain open-minded, just not so open that your brains fall out. Peace.

Different generation. A man’s place 20,30 or more years ago was to provide a roof over their children’s head and food on the table. Yes, it’s heartbreaking but that was the reality of years ago.
