@TheInsaneShecklador4 жыл бұрын
@@LadyIarConnacht I don't think it is meant to be taken in the 100% literal definition. If I'm not mistaken the beating of Rodney King was one of the major influences for this song. There were no burning crosses at his beatdown. I feel burning crosses is more likely a metaphor for racism, or in this song, about oppression and hate of the common man by the powers that be in general. Also as you know Rodney was not killed. The "killing" in the name part is likely also a metaphor for abuse of power, violence, oppression, etc. (and sometimes killing as well). As to who is doing the "killing in the name" recently, I would argue that Trump's gassing of the protesters outside the White House for his Bible photo op a few weeks back is but one good example. George Floyd is another very obvious one.

They were asked to censor the song, which they did, until Zach De La Rocha decided to actually scream “FUCK YOU I WONT DO WHAT YOU TELL ME,” on public radio for 30 seconds straight. This song was at the top of the British charts for multiple weeks after that performance.

Killing In The Name was written at a key moment in recent American history. The beating of black motorist Rodney King by four LAPD officers in March 1991, captured on CCTV footage, had enraged the nation after it was serially beamed across every news channel. "Killing in the Name" has been described as "a howling, expletive-driven tirade against the ills of American society." The uncensored version contains the word "fuck" 17 times. The song builds in intensity, as Zack de la Rocha chants the line "Fuck you, I won't do what you tell me", murmuring the line the first four times, building in a crescendo the next four times and screaming angrily the line the final eight times culminating with De La Rocha's screaming "Motherfucker!" The song alludes to the history of some US police force officers being part of white supremacist organizations, such as the Ku Klux Klan, whose symbol is the burning cross. The BBC News website refers to it as railing against "the military-industrial complex, justifying killing for the benefit of, as the song puts it, the chosen whites." The song reflects the racial tensions that exist in the United States; it was released six months after the Los Angeles Riots, which were triggered by the acquittal of four white police officers who beat black motorist Rodney King. “I was in LA when the whole Rodney King episode went down,” explains Garth Richardson, producer of the song and 1992’s self-titled parent album. “That was a big thing for the city. Zack and I had a long talk about the power of speech and how whatever he needed to say, he had to say it. Malcolm X was a major influence in Zack’s life, and this was not the time to back down.”

True, but notice how the song lyrics SOME of those that work forces, meaning not all. It's not good to throw all people under the bus, when the despising should not apply to them. I'm sure there are cops out there who (figuratively) end up throwing innocent people under the bus due to lumping all people together and not using discerned judgment, and there are people who throw all of cops under the bus. This article speaks of Freemasonry in relation to the police force. www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2018/jan/02/secret-handshake-police-freemasons The relevancy of the lyrics of the song associated with "those who burn crosses".... Albert Pike, a leader of the KKK was also a high ranking Freemason. He was the author of the Morals and Dogma of the Freemasons. The Freemasons are a political cult, and people do not move up the political ladder, if they do not hold allegiance to that organization, and yet that organization is merely a branch of a higher organization. The Vatican rules behind the powers of many nations, even through its Orders: the Jesuits, the Knights of Malta, the Freemasons. Even the Queen of England is a Knight of Malta. While the Vatican is a worldly power, Jesus said His kingdom is NOT of this world. The Magisterium, the popes desire for people to believe that they are the mediator, the bridges, the go-between that is between God and the people. Jesus did not establish Roman Catholicism. The only entity which fully matches the Bible's description in the book of Revelation regarding the identity of the Whore of Babylon (aka the mother of harlots) is Vatican city. Jesus did not establish a worldly institution, made by men, but the Bible says that God dwells in temples not made by human hands, going on to explain that only those who have His Spirit, belong to Him (see Romans 8:9, and those who have His Spirit are His temples, and His building. Being a government approved organization, does not mean God approved. You do not join a congregation to get to God, but you go to God first, then He makes you part of His congregation. The way of Salvation is easy, because Jesus accomplished all of the works, so the Spirit of God could be freely given to us, through the sincerely heartfelt and humble asking. Whoever wants mercy and forgiveness, even the Righteous Spirit of God, and the full payment of their sins will be given all, if they are willing to receive the Spirit of God through Jesus, and by calling on His name, and asking Him, God will honor the request of the genuine. To be kept by God for all eternity takes less than 5 minutes, and out of all the choices we can make or fail to make in this world, this is not the one to miss out on.

I just asked my mother to watch this video as a culturally important thing. She only listens to classical music. Watching you understand the lyrics as the song plays really brings home the reality of the situation and that it is not just propaganda. I watched this video of yours about 2 years and it touched me and I remembered. My mother was born during World War II, central California, white, military, and poor. I was raised to be compassionate and with the golden rule. Intellectually, I have known that black people are oppressed my entire life. I didn't even begin to actually get it until the events that led to the riots a few years ago. I wish I had a deeper Revelation to share with you. I just want you to know that we're trying and that you help. Edit again: I was raised in Tucson which is 72% white. During the riots I lived in Vallejo which is approximately 1/4 black 1/4 Hispanic 1/4 white and 1/4 Asian. It was enlightening to say the least. It's been a few hours since I wrote this and I would just like to point out that I know that white people are fucking stupid, and I apologize. I mean white people are ignorant. Fucking ignorant.

I remember seeing them live at Lollapalooza and having Zach de la Rocha yelling at the audience to NOT support the corporate oligarchs and their huge mark-ups on merch, ordering people to just take a marker and write "RATM" on their own shirts instead of buying from the vendors at the event, and yet they were SO GOOD that people were buying the Lollapalooza-sanctioned band shirts left and right. RATM was too woke for their audience then and may still be today, who knows?

People burned down a significant amount of Los Angeles as a result. It's not enough to keep the outrage momentum going for a proper reform of the LAPD, but not "angry enough then" is a bit inaccurate, in my opinion.

Zacharias Manuel de la Rocha was born in Long Beach, California, on January 12, 1970, to a Mexican-American father[3] (the artist Robert "Beto" de la Rocha, born 1937)[4] and a mother of German and Irish origin, Olivia Lorryne Carter (born 1941).[4][5] Beto was a muralist and a member of Los Four, the first Chicano art collective to be exhibited at a museum (LACMA, 1973). De la Rocha's paternal grandfather, Isaac de la Rocha Beltrán (1910-1985),[6] was a Mexican revolutionary[7] who fought in the Mexican Revolution and worked as an agricultural labourer in the U.S. De la Rocha would later see the hardships his grandfather endured reflected in the struggles of the Zapatista Army of National Liberation.[8] De la Rocha's parents divorced when he was six years old, and he moved from East Los Angeles to Irvine with his mother, who attended the University of California at Irvine and ultimately earned a PhD in anthropology.[9] De la Rocha later described Irvine as "one of the most racist cities imaginable" and said that "if you were a Mexican in Irvine, you were there because you had a broom or a hammer in your left hand". I grew- up on this band! The 90's was full of activists trying to change our society. Being from a mixed culture myself and being Native American and Mexican indian on my fathers side along with African and french and then white on my mothers side, this band resonated with me because of all the bullying and racist actions I endured growing up by white people. Sad as it sounds that's the truth and how it was growing up in the 90's for me and a lot of other children of color. To love rage against the machine is understatement for me. Their lyrics still ring just as loud and true now as they did back then. I love seeing the new generation finding them out. I'm a mother and my boys grew up understanding and seeing the world for ALL it is. Through life, music and art. Keep the cycle going. Stay WOKE! One love and forever live on RATM!

Definitely not reaching. It's about the fact that there are police officers who are also in various white supremacist groups (the KKK specifically) Unfortunately as relevant in 2020 as it was when it was written in 1991

This is quite possibly the scariest part. Almost 30 years have passed and the strains of racism continue to flow through public servants who are supposed to protect and serve. Infiltration in it's seemingly endless cycle continues to prevail. It shows you how strong the claws of racism are, and it shows you the power of racist lineage passed down through generations.
@bravetherainbow4 жыл бұрын
The idea of the police being there to "protect and serve" is not the real purpose of the police, just a bit of propaganda that is completely detached from their actual purpose: to use force against citizens on behalf of the government, to keep them in line. That is their only real purpose, that is all they have ever existed to do. Racism and policing both work together hand in hand to protect the power of American capitalists.

George Floyd did EXACTLY what they told him. This song is TWENTY-EIGHT YEARS OLD! November 2, 1992 released. AND STILL NOTHING IS DONE! Mr. Floyd is a martyr. He was the perfect and filmed example to disprove ALL EXCUSES! DEFUND, DEMILITARIZE! Protect and serve or disappear!
@kwantoon4 жыл бұрын
He was a fucking criminal, stop with the martyr shit. Are you proposing that all law and order break down so the shitbags of the world can do as they please? It's this way of thinking that will destroy society once and for all. If Mr Floyd had not been breaking the law he would still be alive. While I agree that cop is a piece of shit, it's the actions of Mr Floyd that put him in that position to begin with. He was BREAKING THE FUCKING LAW!!!!!!!

@@kwantoon Whatever, dude. Police aren't judge, jury and executioners. They are police. They should arrest and that's it. Punisment is not theirs to dole out. Guilt must be established first. Innocent until PROVEN guilty, remember?

@@suzannev12 You're just not getting it and it's pointless to try to explain it to you. I'm pretty sure you'll start getting it when more and more good cops start leaving the police departments across the country. Now that everyone is lumping them together, can you blame them? It's funny how everyone is on this racism kick but those same people have no problem doing the exact same thing when it comes to the police. Why don't you think about that for a while, really let it sink in. Really, out of all the police in this country how many have acted like this piece of shit cop? Yet there now seems to be a war against the police as a whole, because of a few bad ones. Prejudice much?
@suzannev124 жыл бұрын
@@kwantoon Well, I could say the same thing to you: you just don´t get it. Cops are there to arrest, there's still a chance the person is innocent and that's for the judges and juries to decide, not cops. You're excusing police killings. What good cops can do, is call their racist co-workers out and not stand for that kind of treatment. Resisting arrest should not be a death sentence. Comitting a crime should not be a death sentence. It´s really that simple. But tell yourself you're right and I'm wrong and the status quo will remain. That won't EVER be me but you do you, I guess.

@@suzannev12 I never once said or implied that police killings were okay. How can I debate a topic like this when the other person takes only what they want from my comment, instead of actually reading it? As I said, pointless.
