Today we take the RANS S6S Coyote II up for a flight in Microsoft Flight Simulator - putting it through it's paces from the Parallel 42 Campground scenery.

Hi Jonathan Firstly, i would like to congratulate on such a thorough test of the Rans S6 As i real world Rans Owner/Operator i have worked very closely with the developer to fine tune this flight model .... it has evolved quite a bit already since initial release. Firstly you have noticed the "Mush" tendency, this is something we worked very hard at recreating in MSFS, i spent several hours testing and videoing the slow speed Qualities then passing them on to the developer. Essentially what happens is at low speed the tailplane loses control authority before the main wing stalls. In the real aircraft i can set idle, mush at 500fpm and "Steer" using the rudder pedals. In a power on stall i have to work a bit harder on the pedals, however i can prevent a wing drop provided i keep the aircraft in balance (ball in the centre) Much like the Super Cub i fly, the Rans is a very forgiving airframe provided you maintain co-ordinated flight. However if you "cross your controls" you will find that it will bite and spin. In the real aircraft i usually appraoch at 60mph and sideslip down to the threshold, again we worked very hard on getting the sideslip qualities right, as i feel many of the aircraft in MSFS are too "Slippery" The problem with "Generic flight models" is sim users begin to feel that all ga aircraft should behave in a certain way, when in fact that could not be further from the truth. I can assure you a Rans or a Cub do not handle like a C152/C172 Should you find yourself in the South East of England, i would be happy to take you up and demonstrate the aircrafts amazing slow speed qualities. Best wishes Chris Palmer

Fantastic feedback - as I said during video - I couldn't really comment for sure - not having been in a real one :) This sort of feedback is what makes any of this worth it :)

@crisjpalmer - I'm not sure if you were aware that this reviewer is not a real world pilot. I know, he presents videos as though he is, but it's been clear from other fax pas that he is not, and he has stated so on a video once before. Therefore, I don't think his comments relating to how the FM of this model is compared to the real aircraft, are valid or justified.

Hi Cris, I agree with all you have written here. I also own a RANS S6 II and enjoy flying it. I don’t get out as often as I would like but we are just going into spring here in Australia and the weather is good. I love my little Coyote, it is just coming up to 100 hours TT and is going well on the 80 Hp Rotax. Cheers.

Actually this stall is realistic. It is called falling leaf and some aircraft do stall like that. Rans and J3 Cub are amongst them.

I flew a friend's real Rans S6S, tri gear, back around '08, flying out of Hemet to an airport south of Ontario. I loved its performance, I was heavier then, and the owner let me fly his aircraft to 9000 ft. The aircraft was not as influenced by the slipstream as some other aircraft in its class, because of its design--the entire body acts like a keel on a sailboat so it felt, in real life, like skippering a boat and it took some energy to get the rudder to respond when chop put us into a slip or a skid, but the pilot said "don't dance on the rudder pedals until landing", in the air, this bird will fly true and it indeed did so. This add-on, except for the British registration, looks just like what I flew. I liked that the cabin was well ventilated, as many aircraft in this class allow fumes from the fuel tank to drift into the cabin. I wish someone could give this developer a ring for those of us who use the Xbox. It's not on the Xbox Marketplace, and the developer would get some sales from putting this type of aircraft into our platform. From what you described in your review, nothing was unexpected in terms of performance. I recall having to put in a fair amount of trim to get the aircraft to a sweet spot during all phases of flight, but once I worked that out, it behaved like a puppy and for me was arguably the most breathtaking, dope and fabric, microlight flight I ever had.

Apparently the dev has applied for it to be added to the marketplace but whoever deals with such things are dragging their heels a bit.

Nice!!! I wonder how accurate that sim is? If the S6S is really that benigne, then that's one heck of a aircraft!! Maybe that's why they're so popular, and have been for a long time. Cool Sim!!

You also get a bush wheel variant and a bush wheel tail dragger variant. Not sure if this was done before or after the update a few days ago. But mine used to stall with a wing drop, not tried since the update though so maybe the flight model has been tweaked to make it more friendly.

I was reading a flight report of the actual aircraft and it said this: "Stalls with no flaps had a pronounced though easily controlled drop of the nose. When two notches of flaps were added, the stalls became benign. Because you are advised to use two notches for takeoff or landing, the incidence of a departure or approach stall should pose few problems. Stalls fell modestly to one side or the other, but none was consistent, and the problem raised by this is minor."

@@jonbeckett I've noticed it actually has a reasonable amount of adverse yaw. I really like it because adverse yaw (lack thereof) seems to be an issue in MSFS. It's subjective, but using a stick with an extension, the control feel is really nice too.

No disrespect intended but it's important to ask that question to the right individual. Our reviewer here is not a licenced pilot, and so, many would agree is not best placed to answer that question. He says of this aircraft "the low speed handling doesn't seem tremendously accurate". In fact, as a Rans flyer (sadly not owner), the low speed handling - which the devlopers worked tirelessly to recreate in this model - is the closest you will find to 'real' for a Rans, in any model. What he means is "it doesn't feel like every other ultralight in MSFS"; which is true - for the better. It's not helpful to assume a self-appointed 'expert' role, when you really are not an expert in a given field.

@@droge192 This is getting quite tiring. I said in the video, and the comments that it seemed too good to be true but couldn't qualify it - a real S6 owner has now qualified it.

Hmmm, the fact you feel the low speed handling in this model does not feel right, suggests you're an enthused simmer rather than a real pilot. I've read 3 or 4 accounts from real-world Rans S6 flyers, all commenting on how this model 'finally gets it right' for this category of aircraft in MSFS. And that begs the question, of you're not a real world pilot, why make a comment like "the low speed handling does not feel quite right". I was under the impression that your mission here was one of entertainment; sharing reviews and opinion about flight sim models. You often seem to venture into real aeronautics and, dare I say, often make errors in statement. Please be a good sim pilot entertainer, rather than a charleton.
@droge192
@droge192 Жыл бұрын
Agreed. I think people have assumed he's a RW pilot because he often ventures into that field, with his opinions and judgements. And so he's been happy to adopt the false crown and now reports as though he is a 5,000 hour GA pilot.
