FIRST LOOK: FUTURE BRP MIGUEL MALVAR (FF-06) - ARMED WITH CLOSE-IN WEAPON SYSTEM
A recent photograph has surfaced, providing another compelling proof that the HDC-3200 corvettes/frigates are indeed set to become the Miguel Malvar-class vessels. The image, taken at the HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (HD HHI) shipyard in Ulsan, South Korea, showcases the first ship of this class. This ship, previously identified as the future BRP Miguel Malvar (FF-06), prominently displays the name "Miguel Malvar" on its aft, thus confirming earlier reports.
The significance of this sighting cannot be overstated. Not only does the nameplate solidify the identity of the vessel, but the photograph also reveals key design elements that had been a subject of speculation. Notably, the aft section of the ship lacks an opening for a Towed Array Sonar (TAS), a feature that was also absent in the earlier Jose Rizal-class frigates. This aligns with prior confirmations from MaxDefense PH that the new corvettes would be "Fitted for but not with" (FFBNW) the TAS, meaning the sonar systems are intended to be acquired and installed separately at a later date. There had been hopes that space allocation for these systems would be provided, but the absence of the opening suggests otherwise.
