⁴ᴷ⁶⁰ FIRST LOOK: R211S 105-109 being Moved at Clifton Shop!

The R211 is a New York City Subway car being built by Kawasaki Railcar for the B Division and the Staten Island Railway (SIR). This video shows the R211S variant, which is intended for the Staten Island Railway to replace the R44s that are running there. Here, we see the second set of R211S cars, 105-109, being shunted around Clifton Shop. These cars were just delivered a few days ago.
This viewpoint is located at a publicly-accessible location: the north end of the northbound platform at Clifton Station. Enjoy!

So it’s a 5 car set. Is the rest of the order for 5 car sets? Does the SIRR need the capacity of 5 car sets? Are the platforms long enough for 5 car sets? Why a 5 car set v. 2, 3 or 4 car sets? Why limit to one configuratioj?

The existing R44 cars are 75 feet long and run in 4 car sets. The R211 cars are 60 feet long and were ordered as 5 car sets. Exactly the same length trains, both 300 feet long. The difference is that the new trains will have 4 more doors, meaning quicker loading and unloading, and shorter station dwell times.

They’re in 5-car sets because each individual car is only 60 feet long as opposed to the R44s which are 75 feet. In short, a 5-car R211 set is actually the same length as a 4-car R44 consist which is 300 feet.

Not as they are now. The R211S has cab-signaling equipment which enables it to run on the SIR. They would need to retrofit them if they were to run on NYCT subway tracks.
