Guano is historically bat or bird droppings. In the 19th century, European farmers were concerned that their soil was becoming depleted and unable to support a growing population. Prussian geographer Alexander von Humboldt brought samples of guano back to Europe after visiting Peru in 1806, and the chemists he gave them to analyzed it and recognized its fertilizing power. Guano was mined, transported, and sold to countries like Germany, France, England, and the United States. It was a major factor in the development of modern farming, and helped to boost crop yields in Britain and America.

I think the bag seal at 6:00 says "Sovereign Peruvian Government, Guaranteed Analysis Guano". There was a huge guano boom, controlled be the Peruvian government, that was exported as fertilizer and fuel in the 1830s. There's an article called "The Great Guano Boom and Bust" that covers it in detail. Interesting read. Ohlendorff & Co., was founded in 1858, transformed into the Anglo-Continentale corporation in 1883, taken over in 1937 by Fisons Ltd and closed in 1946.

Thank you for sharing that gorgeous Aurora with us. How spectacular. So,I found some very intersting facts about your find. The guano boom The guano trade took place from 1840 to 1870, and was a major contributor to Peru's economy. During this time, 12 million tons of guano was extracted and sold. The English House of Gibbs The English mercantile house of Gibbs had a near monopoly on the Peruvian guano trade from 1842 to 1861.( Wonder if they are distant relatives of the BeeGees.🤭 The logistics of the trade The guano was transported from Peru to Britain, which was a distance of 10,000 nautical miles and took around 40-50 days. The guano was mined from the Chincha Islands, which are located off the coast of Peru. The guano was rich in nitrogen, which helped promote plant growth and was used as a fertilizer. It was from bird droppings on the island. So a very old and interesting find!

The Peruvian lead seal is from bags of bird poo fertilizer from the guano islands. The birds are manly cormorants as well as pelicans and other birds. It was a big trade (and is still collected) in the 19th and early 20th century.

South American countries had a huge industry mining bat crap out of caves... over thousands of years, the caves were full top to bottom! They sold it as fertilizer. They still do it today, although I recall about 20 years ago, they were starting to get through it finally.

@ I stand corrected your right it was bird Peru exported bird guano from 1840- early 1900’s not bat thanks for the correction I’d never heard it from birds only bats
@jereschr16 сағат бұрын
Guano is kind of bird poop that specifically was mined from South Americas in the 19th century. Guano was very valuable, since its use as a fertilizer was popular since the ground becomes more poorer the more times it is being farmed (less rich soil, so you'd need to leave it uncropped for some time) and there was even higher demand closing in to 20th century so that guano's price was a third of gold's price. In the beginning of the 1900's German scientist and chemist Fritz Haber was able to produce a cheaper and more better fertilizer by using nitrogen and basically made the need for guano plummet and that's quite good since there really was too much of a demand for guano that wasn't that numerous so there would have been a shortage eventually.
@diverdannavyvet9672Күн бұрын
Guano is also BIRD Excrement. Particularly Sea Bird Excrement from Peruvian Islands which is still 'mined' for use as farm/crop fertilizer.

What a great start to the new year for you! Have you ever tried using Google Translate to decode those Russian bag seals? It is possible to use the camera to scan the text and translate it. Something I would like to see is an episode where you talk about some of the things that you have taken to the museum for interpretation. My interest in your videos is the archeology more than the detecting so it would be interesting to know what the really old things turned out to be. Thanks for the entertainment.

I took a friend detecting for his first time, and it made me think of something that gets overlooked on most detector channels. People probably don’t realize the hundreds of chirps we hear before we settle on a target. Everyone hears your machine when you’re on something promising, but they might not realize all the racket that you walk right past. Edit: This is in regards to your possible “how to” video.

What a great start to the year! The footage of the aurora answered a question I've had for a while. I've been told that to get any good pictures you need a long exposure. Obviously that's not the case with your video, perhaps it's because you're about 200miles further north than me so the light is stronger. Anyway it was lovely to see and thanks for sharing.🙂

Yes the same comment; Guano is either cave bat droppings OR seabird droppings from island nesting colonies? Rich in nitrates if I remember correctly, and I think it will be the later. Used as a fertilizer and probably expensive in the day? Good to start 2025 with you my man!
