I'm a retiree living 4 years in Colombia now. Just found your channel and the info is always spot on. I've traveled the world my whole life and can't see living full time in the US anymore. I visit my grown kids and that's about it. Life abroad just offers too many adventures as opposed to planting myself in the US and not experiencing the world. We are looking at Spain or Portugal next. Maybe Mallorca, we'll see, but just want to write a small note to tell you that you're doing a great job and give me hope other young and older Americans alike will live outside their box and experience other worlds.

I am 29 from Texas and have traveled abroad many times (Indonesia, Estonia, Latvia, Finland, Scotland, Germany, and Portugal) and then all over the USA. And Portugal is HANDS DOWN the most beautiful place I have ever visited. Its like a dream. Like a fairy tale. The people, the food, the wine, the breathtaking landscapes and beaches. It has been 4 years since I was there and I have never wanted to go back to a place so bad.

7:06 Kristin, you are SO right about the time zone benefits ! I just got back from a 6 week stay in Europe, 3 weeks in Malta, and 3 weeks in Athens. My office hours in the US are 8am - 5pm Central time, so in Malta I worked from 3pm - Midnight, and in Athens it was 4pm - 1am. Although I worked everyday Monday through Friday, I felt like I was on a 6 week vacation. I had almost the entire day to do whatever I wanted. It was more relaxing. I got 5-8 miles of walking / running in a day. I saw all the museums, historic sights, ate at fun restaurants, and never actually took a day of vacation time. I can't understand why more people aren't trying to do this.

I am an American retiree in Thailand. I love your observations about rediscovering the benefits of living outside the US. I’ve lived in Thailand 6 years now, in Bangkok, and without a car. We built a house in the countryside and this year I bought a car. For years I’ve been telling people how wonderful it was to not own a house and a car. Now though, I am loving the car. I have experienced a jolt of freedom to travel more, at least inside Thailand. I see a lot of road trips in my future.

But Thailand makes you leave every 6 months and go to another country and reapply to come back in and that would be really annoying.

@@pinkiepinkster8395 An Elite visa is somewhat expensive but would allow you to stay 5-20 years. I am retired and I extend my OA visa yearly indefinitely. Tourists are limited to 75 days right now. There are plenty of digital nomads in Thailand. I’m not sure what they do to stay here long term but somehow they manage it. At least with Covid travel restrictions gone you can easily do border runs.

@@Resmith18SR You can to border runs now that Covid travel restrictions have been removed. You can’t stay for years as a tourist because they expect tourists to be tourists. Tourists are not long stay residents. There are financial requirements for long stay residents as there are in many countries. The amount hasn’t changed but there was a change a couple of years ago to prevent abuse of the system. As a retiree I will admit there is a bit of paperwork for each 1 year extension. I got an extension about 6 weeks ago. It took me a morning to gather the documents. The next day I went to Bangkok immigration and was in and out in 90 minutes. There are not good visa options for those under 50 to stay in Thailand for years at a time but that shouldn’t be a problem for nomads who typically move from country to country.

It's easier to meet people in a walkable place. A walk to run an errand turns into a chat with the neighbor sweeping or hanging laundry, kicking a ball back to children playing, or other random life experiences along the way. I think our cars separate us from all of those opportunities to connect and learn from each other. I also think small independent businesses as opposed to corporate mega stores are more conducive to being socially connected to a community. This all adds to a better quality of life.

Since stumbling onto your channel I've been mesmerized by your videos (and I've been watching a ton of travel destination vids), imagining my retirement and travel plans. I will have no limitations in any form when that day comes and yours have been thorough and very enjoyable. I moved from California over 6 years ago and am still loving it. I live in the south (the Algarve) and the beaches and warm weather are similar to CA but with the charm and culture of Portugal and ease of travel around Europe. Enjoy the lovely people and kind communities in the sweet towns.

As someone who lived in So. Florida (Ft. Lauderdale) and as someone who has lived widely around the globe, I can say I got a big smile on my face - just like you - once I was abroad and away from So. Florida. You look genuinely happy again. There is a certain edginess you develop living in a foreign country. I mean that in a good way; it's having a sense of and realizing the unexpected awaits and your not locked in on the Ground Hog Day sameness that you so often find Stateside. florida is disgustingly expensive. I paid 2k a month in Tampa for a box, zero br studio. In Miami I paid 2.7 and in the keys 3.1.. And the realitors are part of a new movement to squeeze every penny they can get out of renters. I have the money spend I do good, but I felt so dirty living in florida knowing I'm being taken advantage of

Kristin, I really like the easy philosophic way you explain things. I might be the expat type, since I really hate long flights. If I go somewhere, it has to be for a reason and for a certain amount of time. My proven way to travel is by adapting to a foreign country and live there for a while my own local way. The unexpected often is the best remembered part. I flew to South Africa to finally see girafes in nature, but besides the great nature and many wildlife encounters, an unvoluntarily large part of the experience was, being part of a group of spoiled European youth travellers. The contrast between people and nature could not have been larger! My next travel was to Egypt and since there were not many tourists due to Covid, I became friend to an Egyptian horse cab driver, who showed me around for 2 weeks. There were so many unexpected encounters around every corner, so the famous old Egyptian graves and temples became a fading experience. I am another generation, since I grew up into world without internet, plus limited travel and communication. My first travel after the break of Berlin wall was to the US Forest Service in Alaska (and accidentally I have whitnessed the first days of the internet there). This was most exciting. I wanted to document the journey in detail, but my camera was not adapted to the wet weather conditions. Out of thousends of pictures, I got on expensive film, only 200 turned out to be good enought to show :). Todays technics are so much better! Not all my travels were completely voluntarily and many were connected with some means of survival. I guess that is the fact for most peoples travels on earth throughout history. Luckily my phases of travel, were backed by phases of secure stays in my home country, so there was always a base. I am glad, I was reunificated into a rich country, where returning never was a problem :). I think all the people, that are able to travel for fun and return to a safe haven if needed, should be very thankful. My fear is the growing struggle for resources in this world might set unexpected limits to free travel in the future - not for the very rich, but for ordinary people.

I'm both a nomad (currently in full nomad mode) and from a place that recently became a tourist city. First found the perspective refreshing. More than a travel blog. A couple of comments. I love collecting guitars and I love playing music. I'm literally on route in my.nomad travels to give guitars to a friend who had to quit teaching music during the pandemic. And it's been inspiring me to write. It allows me to dabble with equipment which I have friends that work for sound companies and are testing portable equipment for recording audio with me. Hoarding stuff has gotten in the way for me in the past of creating music... But this way I'm still able to dabble in my interest for musical things while still "paying it forward" (something I'll get to in a second) Being from a city which has had tourists it does impact the way the city's dynamics ebs and flows and seeing gentrification kick in + something reminiscent of people wanting a California part 2 can hollow out a city. I've seen it in my hometown and many other cities in my travels. In my travels it's very important to me to identify how I'm participating in a city. What type of guest am I being. A lot of places people go to enjoy but many of the places disparity in wages is huge. What's my footprint on that and I seem to keep asking myself how do I leave the place as good or better condition for the locals and for the next time I visit. I am trying to learn different languages and even participate in conversations. And I'm also providing people information about my experience in becoming a knowledge worker as a lot of folks got hit hard during the pandemic and might not have a career right now.

Really important that you mentioned 2ND hand smoke. Anyone sensitive to smoke needs to take this very seriously when considering moving here because SO many people smoke... everywhere in Europe, especially along the Mediterranean. Keep in mind that people smoke in their apartments and we're not used to that in the US and that smoke will seep into your apartment through the wall sockets and openings where pipes are. If you are very sensitive you will smell it inside your place. I am currently in Croatia with my air purifier on because of that very reason. Trying to find an Airbnb listed as non smoking is rare too. In my searches I found that the majority allowed smoking since most of the property owners smoke. People smoke on the beach here and throw their cigarette butts on the pebbles/sand. By the end of August there are so many cigarette butts littered on the beach you come home with them in your beach towel. Seriously. I was shocked. No respect at all for non smokers or the environment. I've actually had an uber driver show up smoking a cigarette in the car. I sent him right on without me. He was surprised I did not want to sit in the car while he smoked. Everytime I call an uber it is a 50/50 chance that that vehicle will smell like an ashtray. Anytime I find a driver with a car that doesn't smell like smoke I ask for their business card so I can call them directly the next time I need a ride. The mentality about smoking is bizarre...It is like they never got the memo about the dangers of 2nd hand smoke let alone that it is bad for them personally. People smoke around their kids, grandkids, put out cigarette butts on elevators...it is insane. I knew that people smoked over here but I never thought it would be this bad.

Funny I felt like that when I moved from a mid-size busy city in the USA to a rural area. I felt like I could breathe and I still love where I live in the rural USA away from the maddening crowd. I don't need to live in a different country too much work and love my life in the rural USA. Miami is a zoo and doesn't represent the USA. Many smaller cities are lovely here and some are coastal areas. I own a boat and it's awesome. My ancestry is Portuguese and Portugal is great to visit but not for me.

Internet speeds were a nice surprise for me as well. This year I am nomading mostly around Spain and Portugal and my past internet experience in these countries has been slow and unreliable. This year however both countries have vastly improved - although Spain has done seemingly much better job.

I've always wanted to do what you're doing---living in all kinds of different places for extended periods of time. In my mind, I always thought that 4-6 months in each location would be ideal, though I'm sure it depends on various immigration laws. Maybe that would be "semi-nomadic." Now that I'm older, work and family constraints make this impossible, and there's really no end in sight. So, enjoy while you can!

We looked at Portugal, Spain and Italy this past year. By far Portugal was the best place but my wife speaks fluent Spanish and I have been learning Spanish. With that said we are focusing on the NLV for Spain but if that does not pan out Portugal moves to the top of the list. Personaly the food in Portugal may have better food, I'll say it here but not in spain.

If your wife speeks fluent spanish, no problem to came to Portugal, we portuguese understand very weel spanish language, so, she can speak spanish to us, and we will answer her in spanish as weel. The spaniards can'nt do thath in portuguese! You will be wellcome among us!

I fully admire and concur with your nomadic life again. I’m thinking I might do pet sitting in a luxury home as one way to cut the costs of room. I joined the group within International Living that helps people connect with people who frequently travel abroad and want someone to take care of the pets. I agree with so many of the points you have made! I was fortunate enough to visit Madeira in 2018 for 9 days and loved it. Another great video Kristen, I’m with you on the 2nd hand smoking issue. My hometown Toronto is great for non smokers, but here in South Asia, everyone seems to smoke. Dear Kristin, I am a Belgian lady. Have done some backpacking in life and some traveling in general. Am not aware about USA, only been to New York City. Being European, being Belgian, yes some countries in Europe are cheap. Esp Portugal. Apart from that I dare to say that life has become pretty expensive down here. A quote I love a lot : doens’t the grass always look greener on the other ? I believe it’s awesome what you do and I admire you for that. But living abroad for a while doesn’t make anyone a local. Can you talk about how one just gets rid of their US residence? When you file US taxes what do you put as your address? If you need a new credit card, what do you put as your address? How does one live without an address? Thank you

I use my sister's address as my US address. It is fairly common for people to use a family member in the US as their US address. I keep a US bank account with a credit card and a US phone number. I file Federal taxes normally online. I no longer pay state income tax.

I also find it disingenuous by all these youtubers to not mention that "oh by the way all this is not possible or at the very least not as lucrative without my parents letting me use their home address as my address." Forgive the rant Martin. Maybe i'm missing something but I don't see how it's very possible for most people which makes all these travel vloggers just a waste of most peoples time

Maybe the youtubers should start ending their vlogs with thanks mom and dad because this really isnt possible without you.

We went to Madiera earlier this year, during carnival and have lived in Portugal for 14 months in Setubal - about 30 minutes south of Lisbon. A lot of people smoke or vape. Outside cafes, restaurants, bars and just walking around. There's also the waft of 'something else' in the air too - occasionally! Personally, it doesn't bother me much, and it rarely happens outside restaurants in my experience. Portugal does not have the highest percentage of smokers in Europe - I suspect the numbers will come down, new laws will be enacted later this year to improve the situation.

You cant find locals in Lisbon anymore! They had to live the city since they cant afford living there anymore with the minimum wage … Thousands had to move to countryside ..no jobs…no healthcare…again wealthy countries taking over and destroying a country …and for sure they will leave the place when it gets dirty/overcrowded and not interesting anymore… so sad to see it happening in Portugal …

So for ex. poorer parts of NYC poor folks pushed outward to boroughs (outer areas) and yes the area gets fixed up and rents go to like 3k, 4k, 5k PER MONTH for small places.

I learned Brazilian Portuguese in college and it was messing with my Spanish so I didn't continue. I still remembered a lot and it helped in Portugal (other than foreign concepts like automatic transmissions)
