I have never built a model railway, however I am loving this series, it is an education. It is my dream if I had the space to build a small 2 line rural model railway (1940's) with a sidings for munitions, etc with a Bomber Command airfield not to far away, as I am a aircraft modeller.

I too love aircraft modelling in fact I use weathering techniques a lot of aero modellers use. Thanks for the kind comments

Another great video Simon! I am enjoying the different tpoics you are covering in each episode and learning from your skills and tips. What amazes me is the scale of your project, for example when you see the cement factory building with someone stood at the side of it, wow! I winced at the £299 rrp cost of the Heljan coach but got a real perspective of detail and scale when you actually picked it up and held it in your hand to camera. I am a novice modeller coming to the hobby late but if you need an extra pair of helping hands I would be happy to help and learn as I live in the WF area, Thank you! Richard

Thanks Richard for your kind comments and your offer of help! Yes when you actually compare the prices of OO & O there’s not a huge difference especially with locos

Really looking forward to seeing this layout in the flesh again. A really good job! These Heljan mk2s are brilliant too. As I mentioned to you venire though; they really need realistic, possibly working, corridor connections. It really spoils the look when passengers have a 3 or 4 foot jump between coaches??? I'm sure if you got together with Heljan and/or Peco then a solution can be found for this at a realistic price; even if they are Black paper for now, it would make them look even better!!!

Sorry to be so picky, but it's not just your railway, as most model railways have the same problem and very few even attempt them. Hornby and Bachmann have made them closer, but there are still gaps between connections, especially around curves. I have tried my best, but sill have paper or Black foam connections between the plastic ones. I look forward to see your solutions?

I’m totally in agreement about coach gaps. As I’ve said before I think the main issue is tight radius curves (which if there were working corridor connections) may cause derailments. But you’re right, gaps between coaches do not look good! Thanks for the positive comments! Simon

Thank you for taking the time to share your marvellous railway AND the techniques that you use. I well remember being trackside trying not trip over uneven ballast, MAS trunking etc, also not to fall over in the Cess or brambles alongside. BTW on the Western Region we called it Troughing or Trunking. Nice to see the track spacing trammel in use, that was "my' idea and I commissioned those from Peartree (great company and innovators) - I wouldn't be without it now, removes so much guess work👍👍

The track spacing trammel is superb and I’ve a lot of time for all Peartrees products..cheers! Thanks for watching I hated doing the videos to start with but really enjoy it now. Best regards. Simon

I agree with you that the Heljan mk 2 coaches DO look great. One point though. As in 00 gauge, it is the same with 0 gauge; the corridor connections do need extensions so that they make the connection. All too often on home and exhibition layouts, the hard work put in to making the scenery and locos and stock can be let down by the trains running by looking great but let down by the corridor connections. Now I am not a rivet counter, but just stating what, to me, is glaringly obvious. Maybe the makers can do something to rectify this problem by including extensions that could be sprung in to position on each coach. For this reason I only run none corridor coaches on mu 0 gauge GWR layout. It also helps me to couple and uncouple more easily, as I use 3 link and screw link couplings. Regards, Paul.
@britainsbiggestmodelrailwa14288 күн бұрын
Yep I agree with that Paul. I think manufacturers are nervous that if corridor extensions actually touch, they could cause problems on tight bends leading to derailments 👍

Another great video Simon, that Yale shovel is a work of art how the hell did he manage to motorise it ?
@britainsbiggestmodelrailwa14289 күн бұрын
He uses miniature motors, gears and servos which are all readily available. It’s easily possible to do this in OO these days. Giles Favells book is worth a read as it’s possible to do it yourself ‘Radio Control for Model Railways’ 👍

Oops sorry 😀
@garylong75999 күн бұрын
It’s a common mistake which is made worse my manufacturers who incorrectly call it trunking. Lids and troughs are the same length as each other, the lids are more likely to get damaged when being lifted (quite heavy and not easy to lift off ) Interesting video, Looking forward to seeing the layout at some stage, when and were are you looking to exhibit the railway
