Newport Sea Fishing in Winter. Join me as I have my first proper session of the year at one of my favourite UK Shore Fishing marks. Due to illness and bad weather, I wasn't able to get out for weeks and boy did I need this one! A cold and frosty evening but enjoyable all the same. With the Bristol Channel Cod Fishing season in full swing, there was always that chance of a good fish.
To become a channel member for a fee of £1.99 a month (can cancel at anytime), please click the link below or press the 'Join' button on my channel homepage. A loyalty badge will appear next to your name when making comments and I will give you a shout-out during my videos. All proceeds go towards bait, fuel and camera equipment;

Thank you for watching, it is very much appreciated!

Mate you broke me tonight, first time I've felt that since my dad passed. Don't ever give up this bud, you're doing a great job & you are encouraging me to get back out there a bit more every time I watch a channel. One of the best youtube channels out there in my humble opinion 👍👍👍👍👍

Nice to hear you from you again Alan. Ah yes, I can appreciate that the emotions came flooding back for you, sounds like you had a great fishing relationship with your dad...he will be in a good place now. I'm pleased to hear that the videos are encouraging you to get back out there again, that's great. Thank you, nice of you to say, I've got a bit to learn yet when it comes to filming but hopefully I'll get there, just need to find a little more time ha! Cheers as always, have a good weekend 👍👍

Don't ever stop mate , I love watching your vids , it's not all about the light or camera angles it's about the personality of the guy that's doing it , you do a great job, I've just come back to fishing at the age of 68 , only been 3 times and blanked every time , I now live in France but am originally from Pontypool, only do river fishing and am hoping one day to actually catch a fish but like you say it's just being out there and enjoying it.

Thank you Philip, I appreciate the words of encouragement. I'll keep going for now and hopefully I can make plenty more videos. Ah right that's interesting, I live in Pontypool, born and bred. Hope you're enjoying living in France, great that you've taken up fishing again, I'm sure you'll get some nice fish! Definitely, it's all about being next to that water, taking it all in... the fish are a bonus. Cheers for watching! 👍👍

Great to see you out again, love the videos. Back in the mid 1960s my late younger brother went fishing near Bristol docks. He caught a fish that he couldn’t identify. It caused quite a bit of discussion among nearby anglers who came to the conclusion that he had caught a herring. Although it looked similar to a herring I was sure that it wasn’t. Remember, this was before the days of the internet. I borrowed a book from the library and we were able to identify the fish as a member of the herring family called a Twaite shad, a sea fish which briefly enters fresh water to spawn. This is part of the fascination of fishing, you never know what might turn up
@riversidewithme
@riversidewithme Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment Ron, I enjoyed reading it. Wow, a Twaite Shad, now they are rare and not many people catch them nowadays. I bet your brother was chuffed, great catch! A few turn up in the River Usk during April and May and back in the day, you'd see them chasing flies/insects from just below the surface, such a fast fish. You're absolutely right, you never quite know what's going to turn up, all adds to the mystery. Thank you for watching, it is very much appreciated. Cheers 👍👍

Good to see you back and brought a tear to my eye watching. I lost my father last August, I grew up fishing with him and so did my son . Miss him loads. I'm just waiting on a lure maker in Ireland, to make me a rainbow trout lure ( without hooks). I'll be placing some of dad's ashes inside and he will be clipped to our tackle bag so he can still come out with us. Tight lines mate

Good to see you back Gareth. Very poignant you talking about your Dad (lost my Father almost 2 years ago now). I think being able to talk openly about loss and the emotion this generates, be that laughter or tears, helps us process our grief but more importantly I think, secures those memories and bonds. That is such a blessing! I can definitely see the John Wilson influence in your videos buddy, such a good balance. Keep up the great content!😊

Thank you Mark, it's nice to be out fishing again, been too long! Ah sorry to hear that, still quite recent for you then, I appreciate that it's not easy at times. You're certainly right though, talking about it is a great coping mechanism and a great way of keeping those memories alive, I guess that's why I like to reminisce a lot. Ha thank you, I loved watching John Wilson, I'm pretty sure that I've watched every single program he made. Hopefully plenty more to come, I'm still trying to make one video a week, hopefully I can achieve that this year. Cheers as always, your continued support is very much appreciated! 👍👍

Ah yes me too, good old aunt Fanny and Uncle Bob, they were always there for the family 😂. I wouldn't block you Matt, I'd be scared that you'd pelt pork pies at my windows! I think you're right, that probably is Dad telling me to change tactics, I should listen to him a bit more often, might get more fish then! The fishing locally is hard work at the moment, think I will need to venture further west now that the 'lull' period is about to kick in. Gareth…….’Riverside with Me’ is undoubtedly my favourite youtube channel…..thank you. Your presentation and content is unpretentious & honest….please keep those videos coming!…….you mentioned John Wilson in your video….that must have been surreal…..I hope you washed your hands before you shook hands with him! This week in work I have been replacing a fence with a colleague in Caerphilly. A gentleman has walked past each morning and said ‘good morning’. While I was at builders merchants one morning my colleague had a chat to him. The gentleman told him that he was going fishing to which my colleague told him of my passion for fishing. The gentleman in question went on to tell him that he was Mr Brandon Jones…..holder of the uk shore record cod caught Barry 1966 44lb. I didn’t see him again, we finished the job so I will never know!

Love watching your videos. Really hit a spot today as I used to go fishing with my uncle who passed away in 1987. Did not take it up again until thirty years later when I retired. You were at one of my two very local marks, the other Cardiff foreshore. Have had mixed results at both and have not fished for a while as I am fair weather and daylight only. I was also laid low by the flu recently. Glad you beat the blank. I have caught plenty of codling that size in February and March. All congers at St Brides the rest of the year, but I have caught a couple of Bass and a Dogfish. Have caught a lot more Dogfish at the Foreshore as well as my first Thornback last summer. Keep the videos coming and all the best.

It does not matter, everybody blanks now and again. It's the same at this time of year on the Norfolk coast. One tide you catch fish, next tide you catch nothing. I have not got out due to the fact I have to use public transport to get there and back. So tides have to match the bus timetable. And as the last bus in my area is about 6.30 pm, it can make it difficult. But we keep plodding on, when we can. As for filming I have never done it, so I cannot comment. Just keep putting these videos together, as they will get easier to make over time.

Thank you Spencer, nice to hear from you again. Yeah it's a tough time of the year on the Channel, that lull period seems to be kicking in but hopefully a few fish will show up. I agree, we all definitely need a break from time to time. Cheers as always, enjoy the weekend! 👍👍

Thank you for the kind words Sean, I appreciate it. I just try and be myself really and hopefully it comes across ok. The marks I fish are not as productive as they once were which is why I put more of an emphasis on the watch and not the fish. Ah right that's interesting, not far from Brixham then, seems to be some great fishing spots in Plymouth, I need to try some of them out. Cheers for the continued support mate, take it easy! 👍👍

Hi Gareth, another nice video buddy. A venue you might like to try this time of year is up by the old severn bridge. Locally known as "Loop road". Easy access and fishing off a grass bank. Over the years I've had some cracking Cod and good congers at this venue. As with most of the area, you never know what you'll catch with just a short cast out.

Thanks Paul, appreciated as always. A tough session but it was nice to be out having my first session of the year. Thanks for the info, I will definitely look it up as I want to fish some new marks this year. I have fished some of the Severn bridge marks in the past but Loop Road doesn't ring any bells and so will check it out...fishing off a grass bank sounds good to me! Cheers 👍👍

Great to see out again, I lost my dad 3 years ago and my mother 4 months ago. Even at 63 it no easier!! Our routine was fish Friday using fish I’d caught. Now it’s all stopped it took the edge off fishing. However I’m going to carry on the tradition with my adult children and grandchildren etc. I can’t complain as both my parents lived into their late eighties. Thanks for the encouragement to keep it going. I always look forward to your videos there more than just fishing videos there feel good. It’s also a pleasure knowing the marks you fish giving advice and new ideas to try. Regards Rod

Hi Rod, nice to hear from you again. I'm sorry to hear that, can't be easy for you having lost your mother only 4 months ago. Late eighties for both parents, that's good going! Yeah why not, keeping that tradition going with your children and grandchildren is a great idea, fish Friday sounds like good fun! Thank you, I'm pleased to hear that you're enjoying the videos, hopefully plenty more to come, that's the plan anyway. I want to try and make one video a week, will try and achieve that this year. Cheers for the continued support, much appreciated 👍👍

I lost my uncle about 25 years ago he took me fishing a lot He caught a 20 lb cod off the wall at magor biggest I’ve ever heard of there and sadly passed away a few weeks later My auntie gave me his old Coleman lamp I went out fishing one night in the same spot dead quiet was about to pack up then bang a 10 pound then a 8 pound cod in 2 casts he was looking down on me that night I’m sure of it

Hi Lee, sounds like you have some great memories of being out fishing with your uncle. Two cracking Cod in two casts, I think he was definitely looking down on you that night. I thought the same when I made my Sole video last year...filmed that on father's Day and didn't have a bite for hours and then two cracking sole in two casts, it did make me wonder if dad had a part to play in that. Cheers as always, take it easy! 👍👍
