Good refresher on oil changes, haven’t done an oil change in a few years 🙃

I would also suggest keeping the oil pan drain plug screwed into the valve and keep the barbed fitting and hose where you store your engine spare parts. They make special oil drain valves with a detent that helps keep the valve in the closed position.

I believe Fumoto makes such a valve.

Just a thought here….. Remember that valve that failed on your shitter? Same could happen on your oil drain valve. All oil drain valves I have ever seen(highway tractors mostly) have had a valve replace the drain plug into the pan then the drain plug or cap on the other end for safety. Last thing anyone wants is to have their engine oil drain unintended. At least safety wire the valve shut.

Notice the hose he put on ... it raises above the level of the oil in the pan ... he did not explain that reason for the hose... but the mechanic will know

I would always wet the new filter/filter housing seal with fresh oil before tightening it up.

This may be a little late but you should make sure the valve can’t vibrate open when the engine is running.

I thought that the title was saying that it was the first ever oil change since 1965!

The addition of a valve to the sump drain was a great idea. I wondered though, now that you have made the evacuation operation so easy, about a flushing oil to remove ALL the sludge.

Great music!! Unfortunately most engines on boats built in the late 80s and later, did away with the oil pan drain plug. Good idea on the valve, but definitely a concern not having a plug!!

Mine has the tube off the drain plug.. I hook the same vacuum pump to it, which makes it easier, but I'm still waiting for any oil change to be "no mess", LOL.

Hi Josh, great video and following the work on this boat closely. I have the same engine on my boat down here in NZ. Brilliant idea with the drain plug, will unashamedly copy your work. I was wondering as I didn't notice in the video what specification of oil did you use, haven't got many details here and trying to do most things myself now. Keep the videos coming.

Looked like Shell Rotella jug. Comes in 10w30 or the more common 15w40. They also sell the same brand in 5w40 or 15w40 full synthetic.

Great idea for drain plug. Always learning something here. Thank u. So I'm wondering about the engine access hole. Is that custom?
@JoshPostVlogs
@JoshPostVlogs 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks. The engine access hole was standard on these boats. Ethan, the mechanic, was quite impressed with it, saying it was unique and good engineering on the part of the boat builder.

Hello! Good idea to have a valve installed. However some valves internally uses materials to sealing that does not resist of temperature exposition. Could you share the valve spec? Tks

Is it advisable to flush the engine after draining the oil and before replacing with new oil?
@islandonlinenews
@islandonlinenews 3 жыл бұрын
that's probably a good idea. I always dump some fresh oil in while draining to clear all the crap.

Flush? You may be thinking of the cooling system. If you want to 'flush' the oil system, you just do another oil change soon after the first. Happy sailing R !
